Dunno how you handle a new game.
I normally prefer "normal" difficulties in new game the first time.
But for DA:O i will make an exception and start on the hardest difficulty ("Insane" the name?).
Just because the difference in Dragon Age will be the tactical behaviour of
your enemies and in second array will be the typical "you less, them more damage"-practics.
What difficulty will you use for 1st playthrough?

Going for normal. That's probably going to be hard enough, I'm not really experienced in party RPG's like this.
But since I've already got 5 characters planned, I'll probably try hard out aswell. And if things are going really well, I'll try nightmare.
EDIT: I'm playing the pc (computer kind) version, btw. I think we should all add in what platform we're playing, since the difficulties are different.

Nightmare DOES give the enemies more health and armor and damage. Hard is the one you want Sarevok. Ill be starting on normal and bumping up if I find it too easy.

Normal and switching down to easy depending how hard the combat. I play for the story not the combat.

Playing on the PC and I'll be starting on Nightmare...
...by weeks end I'll be on casual and looking for cheats.

I'll be starting on hard, because it's the most 'realistic' choice given the universe, with full friendly fire, and no buffs or debuffs to you or your enemies.

Hard, until i throw my monitor out of the window.

Definitely starting on easy. Even games I've played for years and I consider myself to be proficient at, I still play at easy. I am not a good gamer.

I'm on the Xbox 360 version btw.
I'l start for a little while on Easy to get a hang of the controls. If the control's are easy to get used to then i'l just go onto the normal. Then after awhile probably Hard.

starting on hard, then progressing to either nightmare or normal if needed to keep the game challenging/playable

Nightmare, definitely.

Hard, playing as it is meant to be with full friendly fire and such.

I'm on 360 version so I will probably start on hard as it tends to unlock the highest achievement score for first run through (like Mass Effect etc) and encourages playing through all side quest etc...

I'll start out on easy to get the hang of it. I have not played an RPG like this since Baldur's Gate, so I am more than a bit rusty.

PC, Normal, reading how this is different combat wise compared to the D&D type games I think it could subtley trip me up If I launch into Hard straight away.
I.e. Oh spell X is like this in NWN... oh dear, not in DAO *down goes the party*
Dunno though first play through is as a warrior so may push the envelope as I have played a tonne of these Char types in other games.

Not really aware of the difficulties, but I tend to go for normal or the second-hardest the first time around.

EASY. After watching Warden's Quest yesterday, and knowing the difficulty was locked on normal, I know I'd probably wind up wiping so much on normal it'd ****** me off.

PC, normal.
judging by the fact that many a review said the game was quite 'challenging' on normal difficulty i m going to try and play the first game (and all my games unless there is a achievement for harder difficulties) on normal.
I hate clicking on easy, its like a jest to my intelligence and gaming skills. I'm also too impatient to play on hard (dying, reloading, dying, trying something new, cheating, reloading) i think that it would take the fun out of the game.

I tend to go for normal, as i want a fair challenge and can't stand "cheating" NPCs, but it seems to be a little different in DA:O.
If hard is the only way to get realism (like FF), i'll go for it
