I always stay on normal during my first play though. My 2nd one will move up to hard. Just depends. It also depends on how things are going on my first play through. If things are insanely hard, then I'll move down to casual/easy whatever it is called in the game. If things are going well and I'm not even coming close to dying, then I'll consider moving up to Hard for the challenge.
What difficulty will you use for 1st playthrough?

I was going to play on 'hard' first. Then I saw players getting their ass handed over to them countless times during Warden's Quest on 'normal' and I decided to just stick to 'normal' for now

Definitely starting on Hard. I have extensive experience with the BG games (and Icewind Dale too) and I'll be pause and playing in any remotely tough encounters. If it gets too hard (eg: the first Ogre battle) I'll switch to Normal after failing two or three times, but just for that encounter.

Ok guys ... honestly, I'd like to know WHEN you switched from nightmare to hard after starting to play ...
... then again, there is something called masochism

Normal. I think they were playing on normal last night on Wardens Quest and it was very hard looking.

I think 'normal' would be the best starting difficulty for me, but I want full friendly fire so it'll have to be hard. If it's showing to be too difficult I guess I'll have to lower the difficulty and be unhappy about not having full friendly fire. (why oh why BioWare didn't you put a separate "difficulty slider" on friendly fire?)

Easy. I enjoy RPGs to death, but I'm not as good at them as I would like to be.
If my first runthrough goes well I'll slide it up to Normal for the second runthrough. I really doubt I'll ever see any setting higher than that.

I'll start on normal. I love to be closer to my character. Back in BG and BG 2 and Icewind dale and the like, I didn't have a choice. Now I do.
I'm fairly certain one of the Commentators (it's early, I can't remember their names...) mentioned they were playing on Hard. Just a heads up. I don't want you dissapointed with normal being too easy.

For the first playthrough, definitely normal. I want to enjoy the story and not get too frustrated with repeatedly wiping. Second or third plays, I'll probably try moving up to hard since I'll have a better understanding of the game and the story will be less novel. I doubt I'll ever go up to nightmare though.

Nightmare.
*pwns you all via her mere existence*
They played on normal during the regular gameplay on the PC, and hard on the eliminations on the X-Box.

I start on easy. Then when I get the hang of it the next time I do normal and if that works for me I go to the next level. If it's too hard I get frustrated and don't want to play.

Nightmare DOES give the enemies more health and armor and damage. Hard is the one you want Sarevok. Ill be starting on normal and bumping up if I find it too easy.
We don’t know that. I suspect it’s changed during development as BioWare has given us a couple different answers to whether difficulty changed health on the opponents. I think the problem is that a player can change difficulty mid-fight and doing something like adding +20% on a monster that’s down health was producing the wrong results. It’s the same reason that when you level up (and you can’t level up in battle) all your health/mana/stamina are set to their max values.

Normal for sure. I want time to figure out combat plus the skill & talent trees of this game. Nightmare will come down the line once I am comfortable.

I'm not sure what the difficulty settings are. I'll choose whatever is the highest option. Nightmare, I guess? I know all the reviewers are saying Dragon Age is challenging and all that, but I won't believe it until I experience it myself. I haven't been challenged by a BioWare game since BG2, and even insane difficulty in that game was easily winnable if you sacrificed your soul to the goddess of cheese.
To clarify, this has nothing to do with wanting to show off or impress anyone. I'm sure no one cares. I just want to savor every battle and be backed into a corner so often that it forces me to really *think* in order to win. I want combat to feel meaningful. I'm sure I'll need to reload, but that's part of the fun.

I'll probably go for normal difficulty for my first playthrough, and then hard for the second one (and the following ones).

Normal. After seeing the Warden Quest, I'm confident to say that the game is hard enough for me at normal.

Xbox 360, so Hard for the full friendly fire. Although I might bump down to Normal if it's hard to predict where spells will explode and the resulting damage radius... or if I miss that king of spells, Abi Dalzim's Horrible Wilting, a little too much.

I'll play most of the game on normal, but for my mage I'll start out on easy so I can figure out things like range and aoe. Easy will probaly last the origins story and then I'll go right back to normal. I am finding "Easy" lives up to it's name for me and I'm ready for a challege.
