It's not the first time Chris gives this advice. He said it many time yet a lot still don't listen.  Anyway.. I'd still suggest people to listen to him. He actually know a bit about the game.

if i remember rightly, the thread Chris posted this comment on was about 7 pages of people saying "im starting on nightmare cos im stupidly good at games, any1 who starts on less than nightmare is a wuss" before he came in with that comment... after 7 pages of narcissistic posturings and insults both towards the game's difficulty and any1 who played on less than nightmare the tone of the reply made ALOT more sense. just goes to show how important context is.

Also, i will be playing on normal on the PC but i will be aiming to knock it up to hard after the origin story.. however if i find normal to be challenging then i'll leave it where it is and maybe try for hard on my next playthrough

I stand corrected then. I half wondered if this was the case, but was a bit too touchy to consider it seriously. I completely understand why he would react that way under those circumstances. On the off chance he's reading this, consider my previous comments withdrawn, with apologies.

I want to play the game "as intended" by the writers. I am not sure if this is normal or hard. I wanted to have a challenge but I don't want to reload a million times all the times so that the story gets killed. I want a good flow to the game but without it being a cakewalk. So is that normal or hard, sounds like it is hard? Thanks!

I am going to start on Normal - on the assumption that the designers know what they're doing - and I will leave it there unless (a) it makes me cry or (B) I finish the game too quickly. On my second playthrough I might consider hard.

Normal on PC includes friendly fire, right?  I'll probably start on that since everything I've read has said that hard and nightmare are for people who hate themselves.

Yeah I don't want it to be super crazy hard. I want a challenge and a good story.

I'm going to start on normal. From one simple fact; I watched a bunch of the Warden's Quest stream. Apparently those PC's were locked on normal and it looked like a nice challenge to me.

Now, they were forced to skip a lot of free exp and loot with the side-quests so they were underpowered for the later portions of the game, but even when they first got freedom on where to go they were reloading several times even on normal trash. One room had an ambush and I saw a team reload on it at least 7 times. The boss fights/quest events were even worse; the teams who picked up the healer reloaded a dozen times, those that didn't get a healer were flat out stopped at a certain part in the game.

I believe normal to be the dev's intended starting difficulty. I know, shocking by the name of the difficulty and all.

I heard that 'Normal' on PC gives 50% friendly fire damage, but I can't for the world of me remember where I read that. So it's not to be taken as fact.

You should take that as a fact. I think the devs confirmed it.
50% is more than enough for me, though. I love throwing around fireballs :D

I'm sure that I'm going to be playing through the game several times so I'll be increasing the difficulty each round with starting on easy first. Easy because I don't know the skills and talents, etc so I don't know which ones will be more needed than others until the second play through. I'll also be RPing the whole way through in every aspect of the game, meaning that I won't be min/maxing my party for efficiency. I'll be bringing the characters -my- character likes the most and I'll take the abilities that best match my character's concept. So, easy, because I kind of expect that I'll be gimping myself on the first run.

I'll go normal, like I did in BG2. I like the challenge. :)

Normal, for me. I debated Hard, but I fear it might make me want to bash my keyboard to pieces in frustration, and I'd like to enjoy the game. Maybe I'll try Hard on a replay, after I'm more familiar with the game mechanics.

Hard, of course, using my kittens' paws as the only interface method. We've been practicing with a clicker and sushi as a reward for leveling up. Hannibal manages the mouse and Scipio is on the keyboard.

Most likely Normal, but my understanding is that the console version of normal is the PC Easy so I might need to scale up if it's a bit to simple.

Easy all the way for me multiple times so i can play a good character role playing or just an outright mean person.

Hard if you're an Infinity Engine vet, Normal otherwise.

So, I'm doing Hard.  I figure it will be fairly challenging starting from a position of not knowing any of the exploits.  I'm sure people will start posting these in the forums, though.  ;)

Normal difficulty on PC on my first, second and maybe even third playthrough.

I want to have fun, not develop a chronic head-bashing syndrome at the first level. And I actually want to go through the game without using all exploits just to survive.

Besides, I don't have anything in need to compensate for by claiming how "leet, uuber and hardcore" I am.

Welp! I was going to do Hard, because I thought Nightmare was dumb (I mean, I never played NWN on Very Difficult. There was never any need to), but after seeing Warden's Quest on Normal difficulty...
I'm really at a loss. I'm good, but I can tell when a game is hard by how someone else plays or if they just suck. That first ogre battle? HARD. AS. ROCK.
Sign me up for some humiliation.

Even after seeing everyone get slapped around on Normal in the Wardens' Quest event (and it DID look quite challenging, that's for sure), I'm still starting on Hard.

I go for as high difficulty as possible on the first play through. If I want to play more than once it will mainly be for the story, and I will likely go on low difficulty mode to be able to focus more on the story.

After seeing Warden's Quest. I rather start with normal. Just look at how many times each team dies during the first ogre encounter (and that was the first challenging encounter). And the ogre doesn't just stand still, its going to be pain in the ass with it's charging attack and stun until I can get a proper tactic against it.

Maybe after a few playthrough, I'll bump to hard.

Personally I want to play on hard but i hate friendly fire so will probably go with normal.

Pity as the difficulty can be changed on the fly there isnt some sort of custom sliders (im assuming theres not?!) to allow you to set damage/AI/Friendly fire etc manually. That would be awesome!!
