I'm tempted to play Hard, but I think realistically Normal will be a more enjoyable experience and that's what I play games for. Enjoyment. Not challenge. If I want a challenge I go to work.
What difficulty will you use for 1st playthrough?

Probably normal, at least until I get to grips with how it works, levelling and stuff, then I'll try the stupidly hardest level just so I can say I've done it, then settle somewhere in the middle

I was considering starting on hard, as that's usually the most 'balanced' of all the difficulties... but I am pretty sure that will crush my soul and make me weep, so normal it is. Maybe even easy, then build up to it, though my first playthrough I plan to have Wynne so I should be all right.

After a bit more time I think maybe normal is the way to go. I just don't want that, I'm cheating myself, this is too easy feeling, which is why I originally thought hard was the way to go.

In mass effect on "insanity difficulty" it took me 2 minutes to kill 1 pirate in a room with maxed out equipment for all characters.
I really hope hard difficulty in this game isn't just fighting for 20 minutes a battle that you could finish in seconds on easy difficulty, cos I will be tempted to scroll back on normal rather than endure fighting a pirate for 5 mins to bring him down to 10% and then seeing him regenerate to 100% in seconds and fight him all over. >.<
Oh well I'm starting on normal.. Because that's the point where the enemies actually have some mass and don't die instantly... As well as they are not too fat and don't one-hit kill you.

I always like to play a new game on the easiest difficulty level for the first eight or ten hours; then start again on normal. That way, I can sound out any quirks in the controls or gameplay without getting slaughtered every two minutes!

I always start out normal and then cut out to hard about half way through. If I play easy I feel like I cheat myself out of gameplay, it just isn't the way the game was made on easy.

I usually start games on normal but I think I'm going to go for the hardest difficulty from the start. I'll let the game tell me if I should dial the difficulty down(how many times I wipe).
For some reason i'm looking to torture myself in DA:O

If "normal" has friendly fire I will choose that. If you have to play on "hard" to have friendly fire, then I will go for that, even if it kills my party.

because there is only 50% friendly fire on normal i'm forced to play on hard

I'd laugh pretty hard if the people starting at insane die in the first encounter.

oh and I will be playing on PC.
@Boomwav - I would relish that. Dieing in the first encounter. It would mean I have a great challenge and story ahead of me :-)

I usually play all my games on normal. I think this time around I may start on Hard. I like the idea of full damage from friendly fire. It makes you think harder about your tactics.
If Hard proves to be too difficult, I'll lower back to normal.

PC, I'll start on hard because I want the AI to be 100% (on normal it's a bit dumbed down). 100% FF is both realistic and will make mages feel more powerful anyhow... and perhaps, in this way I can start to fear some enemies. Or something, I don't know. I'm pretty crap at these games but hot damn I'm persistent.

Hard
I don't like when the AI gets more HP, but do more dmg and FF is nice!
They stated that hard is for BG veterans, and im one so
If hard is to easy il go for nightmare bur judging by the reviews the game is pretty hard even on normal so.

I don't want to use Wynne in my first runthrough, so i'll start on Normal but might have to move to easy if it's a complete hassel to try and heal w/o her.

I'm going to start on normal, to get use to the controls and tactics. But the 100% ff and 100% AI is tempting. I'll probably move up to hard after a couple hours of gameplay, if it isn't too hard already aha

Urgh, Mass Effects idea of difficulty was dreadful. Don't bother giving foes proper tactics or AI boosts, simply ramp up the damage and give everything max level Immunity. To stop yourself going mad you just had to spam Biotic attacks to keep enemies from being able to use a skill.
I think i'll stick with Normal for the first playthrough. Unless i'm having serious issues i'll avoid Easy, depending on how things go i'll change to either Hard or Nightmare. I'm not too familiar with the system and even less familiar with the skills available to attempt Hard with all its AoE goodness. Then again i'll probably regret that when i get attached to AoE skills and attempt FF ><

Normal for me! I've played all of Bioware's games so I'm pretty confident that I won't wipe too often, but it sounds like the PC version is tougher on a whole anyway, so it should work out well.

I'll play on Normal. After playing in the contest, I'm willing to bet that most of the people that start on insane (or whatever the hardest difficulty is called) are gonna get waxed early and often.
