Wow! What a game. I just finished my first playthrough. My impression? The goods outweighed the bads by far, so definitely count me in as one of the folks who approve of this second chapter in the DA franchise. No world saving, but still quite epic on a personal level. Some minor annoyances that I was able to adjust to and a few problems with some technical issues (all of which have been fairly well-documented). Fortunately, I wasn't one of those unfortunate few with major game ending bugs.

Just one question, though. As far as I know, I took every opportunity to suggest that I wanted to be Viscount. But in the end, I never got the throne. I see that there's an achievement for it. And from other threads here, I can tell that there seems to be a way to do this.

Can anyone give me some hints as to how to go about this? For my second run, after my third (or is it my fourth) playing of DAO.

Side with the templars throughout the 3rd act. Or it may just be the final battle. I did both with my Mage Hawke, just to make sure.

from my understanding is you have to suggest it when you can and then side with the templars at the end

Yeah. The Templars seize power in Kirkwall after the final battle regardless of which side you choose. However, if you side with them, since Meredith is dead, you are now the defacto leader by virtue of being the most powerful person in the city. Then the Templar's formalize it by electing you Viscount.

Side with the Templars? I can't do that. My dear sis (and my lady for that matter) are both mages. And one of them is a blood mage. I'd be sleeping next to the Mabari for the rest of my life!

I never suggested it, but I became Viscount for siding with the Templars. My Hawke is a wise Mage who is disgusted with Kirkwall politics.

Grey Warden Bethany said she put her faith in me and that if I believe the templar were right, she'd follow me with them.

Merrill shrugged it off and said she loved me and then we made out.

Good to know. Merrill's much nicer to snuggle up against on those cold nights.

Funny. My Hawke was the peacekeeping, moderate, sympathizer who was attempting to find the best possible solution for peace and kept being stopped or sabotaged by the extremists on either side. And I sided with the mages in the end because someone, who will remain nameless, finally had the balls to draw a line in the sand.

At that point I was so sick and tired of all the extremists that I was just ready to butcher the lot of them. And I feel like siding with the mages was the best choice. I got to kill all the weak mages who became possessed or turned to abusing blood magic as well as all the oppressive Templars who forced the mages into such extremes in the first place.

It was a good time. Kudos to Anders, who will remain nameless.
