This is the first rpg I've played through as a mage. I HATE magic! I've always preferred melee combat but wow, it is a lot of fun in this game. Force mage is just great for crowd control. I love pull of the abyss and then using AoE. Just awesome!

Only found force mage useful for the +100 fort talent which is amazing, fist of the maker is so-so. However when playing on hard/nightmare the other talents become more valuable as it makes for some pretty powerful CC. It suffers from redundancy though as others pointed out, all the talents basically do the same thing in different ways.

I only have Fist of the Maker right now. My mage just hit level 7 last level. I LOVE IT!

I don't know what I'd have done without gravitic ring. Watching the High Dragon toss fireballs for total lack of anything else to do while Varric made it into a pincushion was priceless. Force mages take the cake, so glad I went that road, made me forget how much I missed my blood/arcane from origins.

I think Force Mage got the shaft. One damage spell and redundancy spells that do no damage. Unshakable is nice to keep your mage from getting pimp slapped all over the battlefield or owned by every arrow.

Overall I'm rather disappointed with all three mage specializations.

I only have issue with the sustained prerequisite spells. Since their passive effect does absolutely nothing in practice, it just acts counter to one-click design to have you use a skill 3 times to achieve one effect. Like as a spirit healer, you always activate the mode, then cast group heal, then deactivate the mode. 3x the effort, 2x the space on the bar, for what is essentially just one effect. Nevermind that you need an extra talent that really adds nothing at all too.

Due to the "everything and their cousin interrupts a mage" mechanic, Unshakeable is pretty much mandatory, and feels a little unfair tbh. Other classes don't have such mandatory specialization + 2 talent requirement passives that they absolutely need in order to be able to even act. In addition to that, the pull and slow AoE skills sound nice and can be used to produce some nice effects. But as said before, a simple 2h + Cleave warrior can just kill those same mobs in less effort and time, instead of playing around with them to set them up for more time wasting as the mage would do.

It's a fun tree to play around with though. Just, well, not exactly top of the line in terms of efficiency and usefulness. As almost all things with a mage save for support / utility skills. I do like Fist of the Maker though. It's a decent and fast way to interrupt the trash mobs every once in a while.
