If you need a more in depth understanding about the causes of this bug and how to avoid it, please go to my sig. Thank you.

First thank you to all the gamers out there helping others to not suffer this problem or to work around it.

After about 4 hours of beta testing this game today without pay to find out the core issue regarding "thumbs up", I have found an answer.

I had a save on Act 1 right before Isabella became my friend (5 minutes before) so I used that to do all my testing. After befriending her I recieved the "thumbs up" bonus as expected so I proceeded to the next steps.

1. Went to Merrills house and switched isabella out of my party. Saved then reloaded to find out I did not have the bug. Then I went to hawkes house checked to see that I did not have her bug, reloaded the autosave (entering the house) and still did not recieve this bug.

 2.  Reloaded Merrills house save (still no thumbs up and she is not in the party) put Isabella back in the party (thumbs up is in abilites screen) then went to hawkes house. Checked status within the house and the thumbs up was still there. So upon exiting the house I put Isabella back in the party went to merrills house, switched Isabella back out, saved then reloaded the save. Save reloaded isabella is not in the party no bug.

3. Repeated all steps in step 2 until "then went to hawkes house". Checked status again and yes isabella thumbs up is there, saved then reloaded the save (the save was in hawks house). Isabella thumbs up is still there. Went back to merrils house with isabella still in party, switched her out then saved and reloaded. Thumbs up bug is there.

4. What caused the bug to start? Reloading a save while Isabella's thumbs up is active inside hawkes residence? Really now ok beta tester lets test this out without pay.

5. Misson "Birthright" in darktown outside anders clinic after step "2". Isabella is in party, saved and then reloaded switched her out saved in then reloaded and no bug. Remember this is right after step 2 so I have not produced the bug yet.

6. Go inside the mission "birthright" (the cellar) with isabella in the party (with no party bug yet) it autosaves. Reload the auto save within the mission, leave mission the go back to darktown next to anders clinic, switch out isabella then save. Reload save (isabella is not in party) and bam thumbs up is there. So what produced the bug? Reloading the autosave inside the mission did it.

7. Did it really? back to step "5". Outside outside anders clinic. Saved with Isabella in the party, reloaded save then switched her out. Saved again then reloaded with no thumbs up bug. Went inside the mission "birthright" without isabella in the party and it auto saves. Reload the auto save checked the ability screen and NO Thumbs up BUG. Left mission back to darktown, saved again reladed save still no bug with this woman not in the party.

8. Ok beta tester you are pretty good...how about you complete the mission with isabella in the party (start of step 5 have not produced bug). Now this misson at the end of it basically forces you to go to the hawkes estate to confront you're uncle. Ok sounds like a plan....completed misson after the convo in hawkes house I check the abilites screen to see thumbs up. Went to merrills house switched isabella out, saved then reloaded...no thumbs up bug.

9. But how?? Was it because you did not save or reload that save within a mission or hawkes place? Yes. Ok what if you went to the wonded coast with isabella in the party, saved, reloaded and went to the docks at day switched her out and reloaded. Would you get the bug then? Yes. Why?

10. If you Reload any save that is inside a mission, hawks resdience, Kirkwall at night or outside the city (sundermount wounded coast) you will recieve the bug with isabella in your party. You can save with her in you're party and not recieve the bug anywhere in kirkwall during the day, merrill and fenris house, darktown. I tested this to death do us part...like you know a free beta tester.

11. Isabella is not in my party right now after I completed the birthright mission. I have no thumbs up bug either after having multiple reloads after saving with her not in the party. You can save AnyWhere at anytime "without" her in the party and not recieve this bug.

Please post this on the PC/360 fourms because I cannot post there (ps3 baby). Have a great and wonderful night!! Hope you enjoyed the show.Posted ImagePosted ImagePosted Image

I just checked, and realize Isabella is not yet "Friendly" to me yet. Sod this dudette, I am going to bring her down!  Patch just came out 3/17, did it address this? It doesn't say much on Steam. And I hope this will be addressed because this seems to be more broken than Maker's Sigh.

I am at the start of Act 2 right now.  So I cannot go back to Birthright.  But I wonder what can you do to bring her approval up to Friendly during act 1?  Unlike DA:O you could randomly buy gifts and give to them.  Gifts in DA2 are rare and specific, so I can't just give her massive gifts even if I have a lot of money.  In my nature I tried my best to get on the friendly side of everyone due to RPG instinct (you be nice to people, they tend to give you more quests and stuff).

So is there a way to improve Approval rating outside just limited personal gifts?  And of course, how do you bring it down outside of quest dialogs?

Would it be safe if I just avoid associating with Isabella entirely from this point on (start of Act 2) to avoid this bug?

This is what I remember from act 1 off the top of my head for isabella's friendship.

The the quest you get from her regarding her contact choose all paragon choices. 10 friendship
Accept the contacts quest. 5 friendship
Complete the contacts quest and in the dialogue agree to give him the location of the cargo. 10-15 friendship points.

There is a gentleman in hightown that wife is missing, that isabella does not like. If you do not accept his quest you will recieve 10 friendship points and still be able to complete the quest.

The quest where the magistrate wants you to rescue his son. If you kill the son in the dungon you will recieve 15 friendship points.

Blackpowder courtesy---you help adwarf during an ambush in which he also needs your help to kill the rogue quanri (Tal vasha or something). Agree to help him to recieve 5 freindship points

Act of Mercy Quest--If you take varric with you to trick the templars (choose the middle option when talking to the apostate grace) you will recieve 10 friendship points.

The wayward son---If you take varric with you and trick the slaver you will recieve 5 friendship points.

After the bone pit you are asked to make the workers get back to work. Choose the paragon option to recieve 5 friendship points.

This should Will be enough to get isabella to frienship status in act 1.

To answer you're other question...If you keep isabella out of you're party the whole game you will not recieve this bug.

Ohh just remebered lol, If you chose the default setting (the hero of feralden or something) at the beggining of the game you will find a dalish woman arguing with a human on the main path of the wounded coast. If you choose the Renegade option you will recieve 5 friendship points.

Wow, aren't you precise! :)

Well, although I did try to be "friendly" with everyone, I guess is I was ... trying to be everyone with everyone! So everyone gets a piece of the action, here and there (and we can only have 3 companions at once). On some of those quests above I did not take her along. I did not really invest in focusing on a particular person.

Now I am glad I don't have to deal with Isabella's friendliness. After reading a lot about it, I downloaded saved game editor to be on the safe side and check my attack speed. With this, I am able to adjust Approval point at will as well. Oh, I also found a dev console command to do the same. I am not sure if Bioware takes offense if I write that command here.

Oh yes, I did meet a human bickered with an elf in which they appeared to be in a relationship. So I guess I picked the default setting. Although I am not sure how much these settings affect the game? Beside from that odd setting of a crazy dwarf warden took over Grey Warden and exiled Alistair.

How do you fix this?

I down loaded gff4editor-0.5.2b.7z. Used daosavegame to inspect my Hawke. I see that at level 7 he gets Animation_Speed_Modifier with a modifier of 3. Prior to that he doesn't have it. At level 12 I have a 3. At level 13 I have a -2. By the end of the game I have a -18.

What is the progression for Animation_Speed_Modifier?

Fantastic job, BloodyRaw.

Quick question for you: if the game auto saves inside a dungeon whilst we have Isabela in tow, are we still able to avoid the bug (so long as we don't reload those autosaves)?

i.e.: should we turn off the auto-save feature in the game? or are we ok so long as we don't reload any saves with Isabela in the group?

I don't get this bug by saving and reloading (pressed F5 -F9-F5...... about 20 times) with friendly izzy in party. Tested in Sundermount and Hawkes House. Checked with savegame editor.
There must be other requirements. Maybe it depends on the version of the game? (US, European, steam, retail, signature?)

After you reloaded the save did you then switch her out save and then reload it again?

The process that you did is the only was to not recieve a speed penalty after you started the "condition". When you reload a save with her is you party you will recieve the 5% attack speed bonus from thumbs up. When you take her out of the party the bonus you received will be subtracted from hawkes stats.

If you now would save in any area of the game with her not in you're party and reload that save, the game will "show" the "thumbs up" sign in hawk's ability screen but will "not" add a 5% percent bonus to his attack speed in the stats. The next time you switch out you're party (merrills house, fenris manison etc) the game will fix itself and remove the isabella's "thumbs up" from hawks ability screen. In doing so hawks stats will recieve a -5 attack speed penalty. This will happen every time you load a save without her in the party after you "start" the bug.

Yes just a long as you don't load the autosave the "condition" will not start. Again you can save anywhere is kirkwall during the day, merrills house etc, so just being conscientious of you're saves and you should be ok.

If Isabela is already friendly and her passive ability is unlocked; however, I have never added her to my party, should I not ever add her, just to be safe?

The fix seems quite complicated and I would prefer to entirely avoid the slow-down bug if at all possible.

This is a player mod that gives a fix (a work around to be correct) against this problem. What it does is simply to NOT give you Isabella's (or Sebastian's) bonus at all. They keep their bonuses, and that is all.

You will lose that 5% bonus on Hawke, but I think it is a small price to pay until Bioware gives a real fix (not sure when that will happen). There is another file that also double their bonuses for themselves if that is to help you overcome your lack of shared bonus by their friendship.

Hope this helps. At least now I am glad I don't have to fear Isabella anymore.

Naughty99, if you never add her, you won't get the bug.

Edit: I merely saw this mod and suggested it as an option to deal with this bug.  Use it at your own risk please.  I didn't write this mod.  I am entirely not responsible for any damage caused by this mod or by bad installation.  Once again, be smart about it and backup your entire Saved games directory if you have to.  It's not that big, like 300Mb for my 500 saved games only.

I suspect that the Modifier parameter of Animation_Speed_Modifier is supposed to be 0 unless you have an item or feat that gives a speed bonus. My rogue has Arm of Adruil at level 7 which gives +3% attack speed.

 Quick question:

I enter the Qunari compound with Isabella in my party and she leaves.  I have the Thumbs Up ability still.  How can I avoid any issues? Just add her back before I do any saving?

Do not save/load until you put her back in the party

Ack! Too late! I've already done like 4-5 saves since the beginning of ACT 3 and I haven't used Isabella in ages... and ever since the beginning of ACT 3 I've had the "Thumbs Up" perk but wasn't really paying attention :(

Guess I'll try Tomomi's fix since I have no intention of going back and re-playing stuff :P

Why hasn't BW issued a 1.02 patch yet? :(

if you are on PC, you can download the dao savegame editor and open your savegame file - check -> party -> character name -> field #42. base should be 0.0 and if modifier is negative then you have the bug.

you should be able to change it back to 0.0 or 5.0 if you want to have the thumbs up buff. i guess keep checking it from time to time to make sure the bug doesn't come back.

can ANyone help.

I am not sure what I did wrong and now is way too late.

Since I read this, I made sure to only save in Menrill's House Fenris mansion or at the Keep right inf ront of the pole for gathering party members.

After a while of getting approval points with her the icon appeared. went to Menrill's house saved...

Kept playing.... after god knows how long I decided to take her out while at fenris mansion. And the icon of thumbs up is still there.

All my saves are basically picture copies of each other. Always in hightown or lowtown during daylight, at menril's house or at fenris mansion.

I am not sure I understand how to "fix" the problem. I thought it was to save the game and switch out party members at Merill's or fenris house?

Another issue is... what exactly do you mean by dont reload while inside a "mission"... what is a mission classified as? a main plot quest? a dungeon?...

As you mentioned before. I switch out parties at the designated locations. but the thumbs up ability is still in the ability screen.

I switched characters, in Merril's house and Ferris Mansion only. But the icon still there
