What happened to Anders, and what happened to Revenants?

So after playing Awakening and learning Anders was going to be in Dragon Age II, I was extremely excited.  You lose the ability to have the smart talking Alistair, but at least you'd get the snarky mage. And if that wasn't enough you get to romance him regardless of gender, what could be better?! So with this in mind I found Anders as swiftly as possible and just couldn't believe my eyes or ears as I kept him as my main companion for my first run through of the game (Me as a rogue, Fenris, Varric, and Anders).  What the heck happened to the hilariously uncaring, mage?

I mean that question rhetorically of course because the game does do an excellent job of justifying Anders/Justice's point of view, and the events leading up to his new attitude, but my god Anders became such a downer. The few jokes he had weren't all that funny and the most fun having him in your party seems to be with Fenris or Varric since Varric makes fun of him like he does most of your party members, and Fenris just insults him and doesn't take any of his whining.  My second play through I decided that since I was a mage I'd romance Anders but on a whole it's just so...unsatisfying. Having Fenris as one broody individual is enough (at least he uses his plot powers to kill any idiot who gets in his way), and the only real comic relief is Varric, and sometimes Isabela.  I just wanted to see how people feel about Anders/Justice.  I thought maybe if I went down a romance route I would connect with the whining, moping individual Anders became, but I think it will just make killing him at the end all the sweeter : )

As to address the other part of this forum title for those that played Origins: Remember when you saw a glass phylactery and stole yourself for the coming battle because even though it was 4v1 the revenant could still bring one or two of your party members unconcious if you weren't careful?  And what about the quest in the Brecilian Forest where you not only had to fight a single Revenant, but his undead body guards as well?  Revenants gave me as much pause in Dragon Age: Origins as any High Dragon, but...what happened to them in Dragon Age II?

*sigh* Yeah that Anders is gone. Let's not go there. I believe I kind of got over that by my second playthrough. Justice is the party-pooper, he can't help but be un-funny. He's pretty cool in Act 1. Halfway Act 2 and Act 3 he's just........yeah.....not fun annymore.

My favorite part of Act 3 was Alistair.

"There is no Anders, only Zuul- I mean, *cough*, Justice"
I miss snarky Anders, but I approve of paranoid schizophrenic Anders at the same time.

The Alistair and Zevran cameos definitely made the last part of that game awesome. Especially because Zevran is in the last fight scene with you.

-edit-  it was really Anders only talking about mages with all of your other companions that got to me, though it was funny because their responses  illustrate the level of disgust that you as the player might feel listening to it

I think they decided that Revenants would be like the elites as opposed to the bosses they rightfully were. They are still dangerous because they always have extras around them and my personal hell is the Revenant/Arcane Horror simultaneous combo with a horde of skeletons and maybe a shadow assassin for good measure. The Arcane Horror's AoE attack is stupid strong and the Rev's buffs don't help either.

I'm glad non-high dragons got an improvement. Most of them are semi-boss fights with their insta-stuns, frontal cone of fiery death, and a horde of dragonlings that nip at your ankles. Fortunately petrify works on most of them. Sucks balls that stuns don't.

As for party banter. Merrill/Isabela can be pretty funny and Merrill/Varric is cute as hell because of all the trouble he goes through for her. Merrill makes a great comedic straight woman because of her naivety.

EDIT: In DA:O I found the non-high dragon fights pretty easy though too few in number.

I actually played the Dragon Age games in reverse order, I started with DA2 and at the drop of the hat I could not stand Anders whiney, manifesto-ey, self-righteousness. In addition to Fenris' brooding, the only male companion I enjoyed kicking ass with was Varric. Then I got to play Awakening, and oh my God Anders was cool AF in that game, he was like mage Alistair, and Justice was like a cool, mysterious, superhero/ghost bro. How the fudge did combining them turned them into DA2 Anders?
