I wouldn't mind a couple new ones. New folks are always great, but I don't want a whole new squad. I need to see our friends from 1 and 2 return otherwise they can cram their whole "emotionally engaging" tagline. I won't really care at this point.

At this point I suspect only Ashley/Kaidan will return as squadmates in ME3. (Unless they happen to be in Arrival, but so far it does not seem to be the case. And it'd be silly for them not to advertise that for the DLC.)

Otherwise expect a whole new crew. That's just how it is. As much as you may like ME2's crew they were pretty much destined to be throw-away characters given that any one of them can die. However their presence in ME3, if they survived, may change things. But obviously no ME2 character is going to have a radical effect on ME3's story. Since squadmates always play a vital role in the game's story that means the crew has to be pretty much new or have been "death proof" for them to be with you in ME3. At best you may have a mission or two with your old squaddies. Which is honestly fine with me.

But since Mass Effect 3 is a new game with it's own story, your squadmates are going to be mostly new faces.

im pretty sure well keep the me2 crew otherwise the whole normandy upgrade is pointless.

Everyone survived my canon playthrough. I still hope I get more squadmates though.

My guess is that we'll get a few new permanent squadmates. Then, if they survived the previous games, certain surviving squadmates will also become permanent (the ones with plot armor, as deemed by Bioware). Then, finally, other surviving squadmates will join you temporarily for specific missions. (why else would bioware have experimented with that in LotSB?
& possibly arrival).

My last thought is a bit crazy, but if you didn't import, ME23 should randomly generate which squadmates survived/ were recruited or not. Then, somewhere in the prologue, you specify what decisions you made on their loyalty missions....its probably not gonna happen, but still...

If that's the case, then the Normandy will get very crowded if everyone survived the SM.

Possibly, or maybe it depends on who has more influence in ME 3. Another possibility could be on which squadmember had the highest chance of surviving the SM. For example, Miranda could survive, loyal or not, if you chose her as the second fire team leader

My prediction:

As of ME2 Bioware knows at least Liara, Virmire Survivor and two ME2 squadmates are alive for a total of 4. I'm expecting therefore 2-4 new people to make a squad of 6-8 in total with the love interests from 2 returning as squadmates + Grunt and MAYBE Legion.

Mordin if he survived will assume a Chakwas like position on the Normandy, Samara/Zaeed/Kasumi will make cameos of some sort.

Wishful thinking, it won't happen, because best is subjective, and there are too many variables.  Some people may have lost a lot of squad mates in ME2, bioware won't be able to send those players into ME3 with a skeleton crew because some squad mates will likely die in that game too.  IMO the most likely scenario is around 3 of the ME2 squadmates (if they survived), the Virmire Survivor and Liara, with the rest been new squad members.  That ensures that at most, people who lost a lot of their team in the final level will have three less team members to choose from.

I know a lot of people feel the same way as you, but I really don't get this obsession with having all the ME2 squad return.  The writers have given us some wonderfully crafted and interesting characters, but you have already spent dozens of hours talking to them and fighting alongside them.  Aren't you curious to see what new and interesting team mates they could come up with?  When I first saw the ME2 squad I was glad to see Tali and Garrus return, but I was very excited  to talk to the new characters.  It was a brilliant experience because you knew barely anything about them, the first time Thane did his flashback I was like woah that was unexpected.  If it was the same cast could they really surprise you anymore?  You already know their personalities..

No, they don't.

You have to have atleast two squadmates survive in ME2 for Shepard to make it. You also have to have Ash/Kaiden and Liara, giving a total of four, only two less than ME1. And that's if you go out of your way to fudge the bucket during the last mission, in which case you should be expecting consequences.

Get used to seeing a bunch of new faces as your Squaddies.

You know since most of the old ones are killable and not all saves will have them. Hell, I bet the default save will just have Miranda and Jacob to entice other to play ME2 for cameo's of the other dead ones.

The most likely to happen scenerio is...

All ME2 Squaddies are no longer a part of the Squad.

Liara is still the Shadow Broker.

VS is your connection to the alliance.

All new Squaddies with no returns because everyone has moved on over the years(Or they died) and can do more good outside the Squad than being in it. Especially against Reapers Fleets that their guns would be worthless against.Image IPB

Introducing just a few would pose a problem if they died in your ME2, that means you have less squadmates.

If they have to program, voice and write a story for all of them, that would leave no room for any new and would waste space if some died.

Programming alternatives for all the squadmates would be a waste of resources, I'd rather they retcon a death in that case. But the most likely outcome is that none of them will return save for a cameo or something, like Wrex in Mass Effect 2. Since it is a waste of resources to create an entire character with all the programming, voice acting and writing that goes into it, if a huge portion of the playerbase won't even have access to it.

No more, no less.

Why? That's why.

I figure that we're probably at least going to get a few new squaddies. Probably enough to cover the combat/biotic/tech bases so that even if Shepard was a nut and slaughtered his entire squad save for, say, Kasumi and Zaeed, he/she will have a balanced party.

I really do hope that at least some ME2 squadmates are in your party, mostly because in many cases/scenarios, it's the only thing that makes narrative sense. For example, if you get Tali exiled, it's very explicit that she is now "vas Normandy" and a permanent part of Shepard's crew; it wouldn't make sense for her to suddenly be gone in ME3. It's also strongly implied by the end that Jack might stick around if you've got her loyal, been nice to her, etc (that nod she usually gives as Shepard is walking through the cargo bay just screams, "I'm one of the team now.") Garrus would follow Shepard anywhere, and a Miranda who resigned from Cerberus would probably tag along too. And that's not even taking romance into consideration; Thane specifically says that what time he has is Shepard's to take, so if he's still alive, he's almost certainly going to stay with her.

As for dealing with squad deaths, one thing Bioware could do is create new characters to fill the spots left by the dead members, but make them much more generic and don't take as much time to write/design them. Like, if Tali dies, you recruit another quarian who handles the engines and does tech stuff, but doesn't have a huge backstory, doesn't say too much, etc. That way, murderous Shepards would still have the squad makeup (e.g. tech experts etc) AND suffer consequences for their actions in ME2 in that their squadmates would be nowhere near as interesting. You wanted your quarian engineer to be lovable, interesting, moving and with a detailed backstory? You had one of those, and then you killed her... MONSTER. ;-)
