I believe this may have been discussed on this forum before. :bandit:

You need new squadies.  A huge portion of BioWare's games is getting to know your squad.  Let's say that for ME2 we didn't change the squad at all.  No Grunt, Legion, Thane, Miranda, Jacob, Zaeed, Kasumi, Samara, Morinth, or Jack.

Think of it that way.

It would arguably be improved because they could focus more on stopping the Collectors and less on flying around solving peoples problems.

ME3 should be all about stopping the Reapers. Not building another squad while hearing about the Reapers over Galactic News until the end of the game. That would make it ME 2.5

Oh, I see what camp you're part of. You're part of the Camp that supporters only ONE choice and all unfortounate choices must be retconned out. Well than, there's no convinceing you with facts since you're the type to ignore facts other than the one fact that you desire,

If that's the case you're wasteing both our time.

Elite? I'm not sure that you understand what Retcon actually means, or you are perhaps misapplying it here.

A Retcon in regards to characters returning would be if you deliberately killed off all but two characters then imported it to ME:3 only to find that they were all alive and looking at you saying 'What? Died? Nah, you must have imagined it!'

If a character is alive at the end of ME:2 then the ONLY 'variable' stopping them returning as Squad Members is the writers.[/quote]

IMO, ME3 should only have 3 new squad mates.

The Big Ben Sniper
A female Turian
and a Batarian.

Everyone else should be from the first 2 games.

I'd like to see more returning squad members - a few from both of the first two games, maybe two from each - but I think having new crewmates is an essential part of the Mass Effect experience. It expands the world in new ways, lets you build new relationships (something BioWare has always done well, in my opinion) and makes the galaxy feel larger. Something that slightly bugged me about Mass Effect 2 was the sheer number of returning characters - for a galaxy will trillions of inhabitants, it felt like we were running into the same nobodies everywhere. If there were no new crewmates in Mass Effect 3 it would feel like we've already met everyone worth fighting alongside - it's a big galaxy, I'd love the chance to build relationships and fight alongside new characters.

I like you, ShadyKat. Our tastes are similar.

Anyway, have some speculation -

DEFAULT NEW GAME: Garrus, Jacob, Jack, Grunt, Tali, Miranda, and Samara are alive. Jack and Samara will be temporary squadmates for a mission or two. Wreav will be a fairly important NPC, but hard to befriend.

IMPORT BONUS: Mordin is an NPC aboard the Normandy, giving you a boost to your research and providing lulz/helpful advice about your sex life. Legion is a squadmate. Thane is a temporary squadmate. Kasumi and Zaeed are NPCs now working for Liara, reduced to short but entertaining cameos. Wrex is an important ally and will provide muscle when you need it.

WHAT HAPPENS REGARDLESS: Liara is a very important ally/questgiver and joins you for a mission or two. The VS and two to six new guys (for the sake of team balance) will rejoin your party. All players are guaranteed at least a full squad and do not miss out on any missions just because X happens to be dead. However, an import could add up to an hour of bonus content and provide little boosts that make life easier.

You know what'd be awesome, though? If EVERYONE was present during the Epic Final Battle. Let's say Liara used her network to pull them all together or something.

I have a related idea about squadmates and content that I think would be fun and would allow for flexibility, with some characters being dead.

Let's say half the old squad are in your squad again. I had a very similar list, Garrus, Miranda, Tali, Grunt, Legion, maybe one or two more. (I'd prefer Thane to Jacob for the 3rd male LI, but I can't justify him narratively as easily.)

Now let's say you get a mission on the Citadel. Most/all missions are main plot missions, rather than loyalty missions. However, if Garrus is alive and in your squad, you'll get a little ping: Garrus is interested in this mission, taking him will increase his loyalty. If you import a save where he's dead, you won't get that message, but you'll still be able to do the mission.

If you have Garrus and take him, he'll have one or two cool little plot relevant dialogue scenes in the mission (similar to Mordin's praying over the female Krogan in his mission, or looking at the Genophage research). If your Garrus is dead, those just won't happen, but you'll still get all the material rewards for the mission and all the combat. (Whether or not you should be able to refuse to bring a character on their loyalty mission... I don't know. I think it should be hard enough players don't do it by accident.) This means that people who got someone killed only miss content related to the person they got killed, but people who saved someone get some nice relevant plot bits, which is really what I care about.

I'm all for a good mix, with 6 ME2 squaddies, your VS, and a handful of new squaddies, some of whom can be DLC.

I'm gonna counter this.

DEFAULT NEW GAME: Miranda, Jacob, Mordin and Grunt  alive while Legion sold to Cerberus and no DLC characters. After examining Legion, Cerberus sends him to you to help you. Collector base kept for Cerberus but Overlord is shutdown since they don't have David anymore. Admirals got evidence and are preparing for war against Geth. True Geth brainwashed. Mordin is recreating Genophage cure without data from his LM.

IMPORT BONUS( mostly same): Mordin is an NPC aboard the Normandy, giving you a boost
to your research and providing lulz/helpful advice about your sex life. Legion is a squadmate. Thane is a temporary squadmate and in the middle of game dies or leaves from beginning to get cured if you succeed his LM. Kasumi is NPC now working for Liara, reduced to short but entertaining cameo. Zaeed is trying to take over Blue Suns and if not dead trys to kill Vido too( sidequest and temporaly squadmate) or if you left him behind in middle of game he tries to kill you. Wrex is an important ally and will provide muscle when you need it and possibly temporally squadmate if some mission on Tuchanka for him( or Wreav) is important to unite Krogans.

WHAT HAPPENS REGARDLESS( mostly same): Liara is a very important ally/quest giver. The VS and two to six new guys (for the sake of team balance) will rejoin your party. All players are guaranteed at least a full squad and do not miss out on any missions just because X happens to be dead. However, an import could add up to an hour of bonus content and provide little boosts that make life easier.

Also last part would be awesome.
Something like what happens in the end of DA:O and DA2.

My guess is that we'll get a few new permanent squadmates. Then, if they survived the previous games, certain surviving squadmates will also become permanent (the ones with plot armor, as deemed by Bioware). Then, finally, other surviving squadmates will join you temporarily for specific missions. (why else would bioware have experimented with that in LotSB?
& possibly arrival).

My last thought is a bit crazy, but if you didn't import, ME23 should randomly generate which squadmates survived/ were recruited or not. Then, somewhere in the prologue, you specify what decisions you made on their loyalty missions....its probably not gonna happen, but still...

Yeah I kinda agree. Maybe like the Cerberus Pack comic? After the prolouge you see a 5 or 10 minute cutsene all about the suicide mission were you make all the decisions. But I'd definately like Ashley to return. Maybye even Liara? Having the Shadow Broker on your squad would be pretty cool- maybye British Sniper as a free day-one DLC?

This. So much all of this. It would be one of the best possible scenarios.

I highly doubt so many of ME2 will survive in the default ME3 save.

Just because ME2 had weak defaults doesn't mean they'll do the same again. Especially if DA2 is any indication.

They'd be GREAT for comic relief, esp. if Mordin is done like so many people think.

I'd love a scene with a vorcha, Mordin, and Legion, though...

Yeah... but that wasn't the end of the game and, if it was, I'm sure we'd have gotten the returning four or five teammates from the first game back.

This is THE END. So, why not have the characters you've gotten to know thus far and either flesh them out even more or just go kick **** with them? Why bring in more characters that we probably won't ever see again when there are so many already established in the game?

IF ME2 was the last game, I would've thought it a BIG waste of time recruiting and building a team, esp. when I already HAD a team. The characters we met in ME2 are not just great characters because they were well-developed, but because we know there's a chance we will see them again in the final installment, thus building anticipation for seeing how they are presented.

See what I mean? Image IPB

Honestly, I hope they cut out about half or more of the squad-mates. That way we can have more content for the ones that remain.

But it's likely that you're gonna ned to recruit most of your new squad- or recover all your old squad- as that's what makes RPG's so fun. Meeting new/ developed characters... killing them with big guns (thx Wrex)

I'm a strong supporter of a Vorcha squadmate,hence the avatar. :P

It'd be epic having a Vorcha beserker that tells Zaeed like combat stories of losing limbs in fierce battles and regrowing them afterwords.
