Hi guys,

Just wondering if anyone has tried playing a 2-hander warrior in Normal and not using Aveline as the tank. Does the amount of damage that a 2-hand warrior put out compensate for the reduction in damage mitigation/avoidance?

Absolutely. The game on Normal is a fairly easy affair and you have plenty of flexibility in terms of viable party setups/builds. I just finished a Normal runthrough with a Berserker/Reaver 2Hander Hawke and no mages whatsoever, and while I did use Aveline, enemies generally died so fast that whether or not I had a dedicated tank was irrelevant. There are two great guides for 2Handers in this forum, Sabresandiego's "Ultimate Vanguard" guide and AreleX's Berserker Vanguard guide, both of which give detailed guidance for dominating the game with 2Handers and neither of their strategies involve Aveline at all. I'd check them out if I were you.

It's viable even on nightmare (healer is preferable there, though, or you'll spend too much money on potions)

I used Fenris as a tank through a complete nightmare run. The only thing he basically can't tank is the high dragon due to the knockdown immunity required. It's definatly doable on nightmare so I don't see how any lower difficulty shouldn't be.

I've been playing a Rogue archer on Normal so far and have not found it any harder than DA:O. In fact, it's a lot less tedious. Potions are hardly required and usually the only times I have to use them is for bossfights. If you're having that much trouble, you might want to re-think your skill point and ability choices.

P.S. This is not a "lol l2play noob" reply, but rather a suggestion that you might want to re-evaluate your current playstyle as DA2 isn't supposed to as frustrating as you seem to be experiencing on normal difficulty.

Just finished my first run on Nightmare with a two-handed tank, and it's very viable even on that difficulty where you have to worry about your character one-shotting her companions with friendly fire even time she swings her sword. You should have no trouble on Normal, but if you do find yourself dying a lot just bring Anders with you.

I find not specing into the increased reach for 2 handed warriors is preferable on nightmare. You can even do a mighty blow while Isabela stands on the other side of the mob without killing her. You do miss out on whirlwind unfortunatly. It was worth it though.

Interesting - I never thought of that! I just went with an all-ranged party instead, but maybe I'll try that with Fenris in my next play through since I'm planning to bring him and another melee fighter.

I've got to the stage in my playthrough where I'm running my semi-permanent setup (2h Hawke, Isabela, Merril + Anders). It felt easier when Hawke was the only melee, and using varric as ranged. However...it's definitely manageable with giants reach and another melee in there, assuming you're happy to micromanage a little. This is on Nightmare btw.
