I admit, I bought DA2 hoping for there to be a real family dynamic. A dude flees from the blight with his mother and two siblings, both of whom are capable of defending themselves... Bam, there's something we almost never see in video games. Usually, a hero's family is killed off, or is captured, or turns out to be the bad guy or something equally as cliche. We almost never see them struggling alongside the hero, we almost never experience actual family moments in fantasy RPGs. So I was stoked. I was really really REALLY hoping that we'd watch Hawke's family grow and thrive beside him thanks to his actions.

Oops, one of 'em's dead before the prologue is over. Well, that sucks. Fortunately, there's still Mom and one sibling lef--

... Okay, so now there's just Mom left. Sibling is either kidnapped/forcibly recruited or killed. Okay, no, we're good, we can work with this, it'll be a whole parent/child thing. Hey, maybe I can even help her get back into the dating scene or some--

...

Okay, now Mom's dead. And in an intensely disturbing way, I might add.

So much for family dynamics.

Seriously though, this pissed me off. I know it can't be all sunshine and roses all the time, but there was POSSIBILITY here. Bioware had a chance to do something that's almost never been done in a game. We could have had a family, we could have had a deep emotional bond with these people as we struggled as a family unit to survive -- and ultimately, thrive -- in Kirkwall.

But nope. Kill 'em all. 'Cause it's TRA-GEH-DEE!

Am I the only one manifestly annoyed by this?

No, you're not alone. But, rather than being annoyed, I'm sad. Very sad. That's why I try not to think about it too much. I was really looking forward to playing DA2 with an in-game family and, well, it didn't work out. Not one bit.

I was annoyed, considering when Varric asks me the reason for being in Kirkwall and I say "to help my family" then all of them die(at least in my play through) and I stay in Kirkwall to deal with politics? Made no sense.

If you want a game with a good family dynamic than pick up a copy of Harvest Moon and raise a family. I love Harvest moon..............

You quickly find the city, its people, and your friend quickly become the bane of your existence. Flemeth should have left me to the darkspawn.

I can't... Wait, are you being serious? I can't tell.

Well, either way, different games, different dynamic. I've always wanted to see a family working together in a fantasy setting like this; fighting side-by-side, struggling to keep one-another alive and well... The whole 'track the serial killer' quest in DA2 was the most intense part of the game for me because it was a family member involved. I cared. I wanted to save Mom (And I still think it would have been a better game if I HAD saved mom, dammit). They could have used family to keep the tension up elsewhere, and to have quests be far more satisfying because they involved your own blood.

But no. Kill 'em all. Same as always.

I was being totally serious. Starting and building a  family and running a farm is awesome which is why I LOVE the Harvest Moon series.

I'll agree with you there. They're kinda light on plot/storyline, which is my bread and butter, but they're fun little diversions from time to time.

I'll admit, I wanted more of a family dynamic, more interactions with your family members. But at the same time, I do feel that what was there was good stuff. I always want more of the things that I like, so I would say that they get the point across. In fact, my biggest complaint wasn't lack of time with the family so much as you can't even speak with your sibling about the death of your mother. That Gamlen is the one to tell them cheapens the sibling relationship. But the lack of interaction? That doesn't bother me as much.

I'd also like to point out that this game involves the rise to power. It's often said that it's lonely at the top, and, likewise, a hero's journey often involves the loss of family. At least if you make the right decisions, you can walk away with one sibling still alive. That has to count for something.

I spent a long time trying to make Carver not hate me as much as he did in the beginning. But honestly, the instant he decided that recruiting himself into the Templars, I kind of guessed things would turn out badly for the rest of my family. Especially when the whole "White Lillies" thing started happening, and Emerec (I think it was him anyways) asked me "What if it were a woman you loved?" Instantly, my mind flashed over to Leandra. >_> How in your face was that? Seriously.

I thought the family dynamic was nicely done for what it was, but it could have been so much more. So yeah, I'm annoyed.
I'd be totally fine with Leandra dying in Act 2 and having Bethany and Carver leave you post Act 1 IF:

1) Both Bethany and Carver survived the opening, with Malcolm (aka Papa Hawke) dying instead. Then, they leave for the Circle and Templars respectively. Even better if Carver had ratted out Bethany out of spite (Not sure if he really would do that, as i haven't spent much time with him). That way the final act choice would have been much harder and interesting.

2) More interraction with the siblings and mother post Act 1. Why couldn't I just go to meet Bethany/Carver at the Gallows? See how they're doing, catch up, have them comment on our choice of romance, and especially personally tell them of what happened to mother. Same thing with mum. We have like, what, 2 conversations with her at the estate?

I'd gladly give up some choice (such as the Gray Warden option) for the game to be like this.

Exactly. It always pissed me off that I never could visit the sibling, that I didn't see them (apparently) for three freaking years. (At least, with Bethany. Haven't played with Carver). Especially since she was in my party constantly during act 1 and voiced up during that time. I felt like there should have been a relationship there, like it could have developed...

But no. Three or four lines at the end of act 2, and then bam; you're done for another six years.

Man, Hawke's an AWESOME brother. No really. I mean that. Seriously.

The Circle's uber-restrictive about all its mages. I can see Hawke not being allowed to visit Bethany. As for Carver, he joins the templars, and an apostate like Hawke wouldn't be inclined to wander around in the home of the templars for any old occasion, which puts the onus of visiting the family on Carver, not Hawke. So in that case, it's Carver being an arse.

Just pointing that out.

And yet, Mom gets to go see Bethany. On a regular basis, apparently.

But a respected nobleman, who has the ear of the viscount and also happens to be her brother? Nope, he doesn't even get past the gate.

Wat.

They had GRACE! FREAKING GRACE of all mages in the Gallows courtyard. An escapee from a Circle, who also dealt with blood mages. Meredith even mentions that Bethany is an examplary mage.
Nah-uh. I see no reason four us not being able to see our sister.

Carver I understand, but his ass would be out talking with Hawke after their mother died. No matter how pissy he is.

Bethany can also become a Warden. Take Bethany, season with some Anders, then mix it all in the Deep Roads and voila! Bethany is a Gray Warden.

They both can, dude (Or dudess, not sure which). You just have to have Anders with you when you go. My first time through the Deep Roads, Bethany became a Warden. (Then I restarted as a warrior because Rogue was annoying me).

But yeah, it can be done. Just gotta take Anders with you.

Their reactions to becoming Gray Wardens are fairly different from one another though. Carver himself finally finds purpose in his existence, and Bethany gets pissy that you came out unharmed.

Your family is unimportant. What is important is Varric, if you and him survives, then the story can go on.

At any rate, if you want to have a family, go play Mass Effect. Garrus will be the closest thing to a sibling Bioware ever created.

I thought that made Hawke tragic. My first Hawke was the 'family first' type of guy too. And then he's the only one left. I enjoyed snapping at Meredith bringing up my mother's death for a poltical edge and I enjoyed threatening the mages who kidnapped my sibling.

And then, I was pro-mage and Carver was a Templar. We were on opposite sides of the fight...it felt....tragic.

I have many gripes about the game but the family element is not one of them. Sure it's not a happy story but I enjoyed it.

And at least you gain a cousin and make your uncle a little bit better of a person.

I didn't care for anyone in my family, they were barely in the game...Missed opportunity for sure.
