It's time consuming, but I basically kept freezing/petrifying him and fleeing from his attacks. I also switched between health poltices and heal.
Lyrium was my friend.

Beated him on Hard, as a two-handed warrior, on first attempt. But that fight was ridiculous for warriors. Even with 50 STR, Arishok throws you around like a sack of potatoes. The fight was a 20 minute long Benny Hill tribute.

It took long enough to take him down on normal, but it was easy to evade his attacks.

As a mage I found him pretty simple. More so as a spirit healer because of regen then any of my other mages so far. He freezes/petrifies and dog is a nice decoy.

I found on my bow rogue it to be the strangest. Because decoy literally made him stand there for 5 seconds before he started to attack me again.

Most of it is spent running away like a little girl though, lol.

Mages probably have one of the easiest times against him on the tougher difficulties, they just have to keep kiting and kill him. I'd say the easiest would probably have to go to archery rogues.

Who cares if it takes forever?

He pretty much pots constantly so he was quite a challenge for a warrior on Hard. Obviously hes a joke on any other difficulty than Hard/Nightmare.

And as a mage, no comment, impossible to fail.

My problem with combat in DA2 was that it was a boring test of endurance. Arishok fight, dragon fight, constant waves of enemies... it was mind-numbng smashing. I am aware that you can say the same about Origins, but in it you had to actually try to win a fight. In DA2 the hardest fight is probably the Arishok 1vs1 duel, and it is unbeatable without kiting. DA2 actually had kiting as one of it's main mechanisms.

This duel is a fight of kiting or a fight of potion drinking.
Sword and shield warrior vs arishok... it's soooo loooong vs mage fight who take anyway a loooong benny hill show fight.

My mage beat him without any potions, but it took a looong time. I put all my attribute points in Magic/Cunning with a full Spirit Healer tree and Blood Magic buff. Combined with all the sustainable buffs, I rarely was hit. When I did get hit I ran away to regen, dropped a paralyze, and just beat him down with my staff.

Again it took forever, but I didn't need potions.

It's quite easy to beat him without potions. My warrior just got by with devour. All you need to do is hump pillars, unload whatever special attacks your class has and then hump pillars again while waiting for cooldowns. The fight is literally impossible to lose, it's just a matter of outlasting his HP and potions.

The thing about the Arishok that I don't understand is: Why duel him at all? I do not know of any relative advantage associated with killing him this way, but maybe I'm just uninformed.

The battle option is a thousand times more simple. The fight is literally 10 seconds long. Since I discovered how to trigger the battle instead of the duel, I haven't dueled him since.

When you choose the battle option you can basically 2-shot him.

Open with frag grenade and:

Have Merrill cast winter's grasp (imp) and then Crushing Prison (one of these will normally proc on norm).

Have Varric use Rhyming triplet, followed by arche's lance.

Have Sebastian use wounding Arrow then Archer's lance.

As Warrior....Scythe, then MB.

As rogue.... Backstab, to Strike, then Assassinate.

As mage, same as Merrill.

Then he's dead and his compatriots stop fighting and leave.

Depending on where the Serabaas spawn, he may be dead before they can even get a major cast off on one of your people.

I did it the same way many here did: lock him down and nuke him, then run around in a circle. I would freeze him and use that time to drink a potion and run behind him. The critical thing to remember is not to let him knock you down. You have to dodge his charges. Once he got me on impale and in any logical universe that would have been the end of the fight. In the game, though, I just drank a pot and was OK..

well on normal his stupid easy once you learn how to exploit him as i did.

what you need to do is to run pass him in diagonal manner, since he swings his weapons so slow he will miss you, giving you the chance to take some free shots, then just run pass him again and repeat till dead. He will rush you sometimes, just avoid that and get alot of free shots off.

You can pretty much kill him  with out using a spell, which i did, since i ran out of mana pots by trying to nuke him down with my AOE mage -.-.

Its good to know that he will do a darth vader force choke on you, which was the only dmg he did to me after i started to exploit him, but just use a health pot for that.

I got him on my first try, and i thought  he was impossbile since he just out healed all my dmg ( he was at like 60-80 % when i had used my 2 lyrium pots) but he went down fats when i jsut auto attacked him =P

dont know if it works on higher difficulty settings thought.,

No.

Oh and, people use potions?  Maybe I should try that.

Me.  It's poor game design.  If a battle can only be made challenging by increasing its length, it's sloppy and not enjoyable.

I have yet to duel the Arishok.  I didn't go along with Isabela so I was forced to fight his whole contingent.  It was a challenging but enjoyable fight with my whole team against his whole team (Nightmare).  Other fights, though, feature bosses with stupidly large HP pools.  Make a mistake and lose a half hour of effort.

On normal I was able to take him easily with my Blood Mage/ Spirit Healer/ Cold damage mage.

I build my blood mages Mag/Con/Str so I can wear heavy armor (I rune up with defense runes). I was also using Voracity(the uber blood magic staff). I kept Rock Armor and Elemental Weapons up and switched in and out of Healing Aura as needed. Didn't use the Blood Magic mode.

Arishok was unable to kill me before Heal or Group Heal came off cooldown. I just autoattacked him down with my Mabari helping. I found that as long as you keep dealing damage to him, he doesn't drink potions. Since he only potted once when I fought him, the fight only took a few minutes.

Use the fire grenades, it stuns him for quite a long time.

I guess there are probably certain spells u need to beat this guy, but I realize its alot harder to beat this guy as a mage rather then being a warrior or a rogue lol. Just wondering if anyone has done it yet. And if u did what tactics or stragdey did you use to do it. I havent beaten the game yet, so ya'll can keep the info to just act 2, I'd really apericate it.

It's the easiest way, easier than warrior (I don't know about rogue yet). A mage need the stamina sucking thing, horror, blinding, ice cone and freezing ability plus a staff with extra cold damage( I use the staff of phatalan something, the unlockable one, with cold rune, but there are better ones, it's just that the phatalan one looks cool). Nothing easier than freezing that jerk in place and beat the crap out of him, and even when he eventually defrost just blind him, wait until the effect pass than inflict horror, by the time your freezing will be recharged and you can repeat. If he gets close just use the ice cone, if you time your attacks right he won't even have a chance to use health potions (that cheap s***). I never really like any class other than warrior, but the warrior in this game is so weak compared to mage or rogue being rogue as the strongest one.

I beat him on nightmare with my mage in the 1 on 1 dual, once i worked out his routine, was fairly easy, takes a while but i did it without getting hit. Only spell i used after my initial lot of spells was Horror, he is easy to dodge so keep running and only attack him (with the +dmg vs qunari staff.) after he has charged, attacking your dog or he is horror'd. Does take a lot of patience but if you keep at it he goes down.

The warrior in this game is the crappiest class. My warrior has 71str 30sta and 31cons plus the armor with 331 or something defense and 167 attack and all of the matching gloves boots and helmet, I got a two hand greatsword 167 or something attack plus some other benefit which I believe is +4% damage. Anyway... I got all that but still, my warrior strikes are just as weak then when I started the game, enemies take just as long to beat if not more, if you're not careful all the time some will drop you in a bit. Some fights even get really annoying when you're fighting an enemy with a health bar even shorter then mine but my strikes doesn't even scratch his health, it's like some fights were made to take long, either that or for every level you up the enemy level five times higher.

Mage was my first character and I beat him pretty easily. Despair and Crushing prison work rather well on him (Despair more so than crushing prison) when not using my direct damage spells. Basically all I did on him was run a figure 8 in between the two pillars there in the room until he was far enough away from me, then throw 2-3 spells at him. Lather, rinse, repeat. (This is on Normal mind you seeing as how there is no trophy for Nightmare setting, I have no reason to play on that mode lol.) Healing yourself in between if need be. He's really not that hard as a mage. In the middle of my second playthrough as a 2h Warrior atm so cant really say how hard/easy it is in comparison.

I use Primal abilites and Force Mage, spam petrify and Gravity rings.

I only used those two abilities and won.

My Mage duel with him took for-bloody-ever. It wasn't terribly dangerous, just a very long, slow, grueling fight. Horror, throw some spells, Grav, throw more spells, kite til spells recycled. Try not to fall asleep.

My DW Rogue smoked him in no time. 'Oh, that's all then?'
