I've been playing the game on normal difficulty and had no problems what-so-ever with any boss thus far, but this high dragon is really beyond me! I moved the difficulty down to casual after being thrashed the first time but still lost!

I've read other threads about this which go on about complicated builds and weapons but I'm not sure where to get these weapons or re-spec books, or which party build is the best to have. I also only have 9 potions and am unsure where to buy more other than the Dalish camp, is there anywhere else I can buy them?

Usually I get the blighter down to half health, with a part of my 2-handed warrior hawke, merill, anders and varric/aveline (first try it was varric second it was aveline) by the time the third wave of dragonlings comes, with two dragons I dont have any health potions left and merill and anders go down, without anders healing I soon follow.

The biggest piece of advice I can give: FIRE RESIST.
Fire Warding Runes in every slot, fire resist on jewelry if you can manage it, group Arcane Shield, Elemental Aegis, whatever you can manage. If you can shrug off the dragon's fire attacks, it makes everything oh so much easier.

Also, do cold damage if you can, they're weak to it. Via spells or via Frost Runes on weapons.

And potions? You mean health/lyrium/etc? They can be bought in many places... herbalist shop in the Gallows, potion shop in Lowtown, etc. Also... make your own.  Elfroot and/or Restoration. Load up!
Make some poisons, every little bit of help...well, helps.
As far as the respec, that's the Maker's Sigh potion bought in the Black Emporium for a bit over 1g.

This is a long fight you need two tank at least and a healer with res helps as well.
I did with me as tank and Aveline as a tank as well both fire resist above 1000. Try and keep them to the side of the dragon not face on. I have the devour heal spell on my tank work well hear.

The anders with heal and res as well. I had with a ice staff this helps a lot.

Last was Varrice with an ice rune in the crossbow

If you got any ice weapon runes load them up as well ice if your best friend hear.

Keep moving the tank to the side and long range with anders and Varrice. Health, stammer and mage potions have need. Keep an eye on health use potions first. When the dragon byte some up into the air heal them ASAP this should keep them alive. I used about 10 health 5 stammer and 8 mage I think.

When he fly off kill the smaller dragons first and keep moving do not let them crowed you in. Try and leave one small as you bring down the bigger and stay in the same area / side of the map so your not doing both area at the same time. Note the high dragon will keep send fire ball at so keep moving. When there all gone range the dragon. Use hit and run so he does not fire ball you to death.

This will work. First I had the wrong party and got creamed second time hit got with a luck fire ball hit kill all 4 of us. Laugh a lot over that 3rd time I owned his ass.

Last time I did it was with me as a mage plus Fenris, Varric and Merrill. Send Fenris off to do his max dmg thing while the rest just sits at range spamming damage. When the smaller dragons come, Fenris is so powerful that they're gone in a second and you have only to worry about the bigger dragon(s). So, instead of tanking, just kill 'm off as fast as you can. This also means Fenris is the biggest threat and he gets all the damage.

I had the upgraded heal capacity to heal Fenris from time to time. Don't heal him too quickly so you get a nice bonus from his Silence something bonus,

Whenever the High Dragon sat on his high point, we grouped together and I used the Spirit Healer aura to get health up again, while Fenris was off on his killing spree.

I did this Dragon with Hawke Mage, Fenris, Sebastion, and Varric. I didn't have any healing magic, but I loaded up with 20-30 elfroot potions before and placed a bunch of fire protection runes in all armors. The runes should be available for purchase in your mansion and Sandal of course will put them in, making you almost totally immune to the fire breath. I just spread the range guys out to make it harder for the dragon to land and do high burst damage to the group and generally just let Fenris tank and annoy it, while the range guys plinked away. Maybe on higher levels having a true tank helps, but Casual and Normal Fenris tanks best by just killing stuff before it becomes an issue. Only issue with Elfroot potions is you have to go into inventory to use them, pain but there it is........hmm, maybe I could drag them to the bar....will have to check.

I've never wiped on the High Dragon, normal or hard. The key is to position your party properly, keeping the ranged farther back, away from the dragon while your tank and melee (if you have any) are on the dragon. Once the adds come out, use your aoe abilities to kill and slow them while Aveline picks up as many as possible. Turn on Immovable and/or shield defense with shield wall so she can take a beating without going down. Once the adds are gone and the dragon is still up on the ledge, just use your ranged dps to take some free shots at her until it lands. Rinse and repeat.

I recently killed him with your exact group set up. The only complicated thing is the fact that I have no clue what level you are, what their attributes are, and what their gear is. I'll tell you how I did it though: keep Varric, Merrill, and Anders in a group far away that way they get his aura health regen; attack the High Dragon; if he goes in the air, move your ranged units right when he starts flying up; when adds pop up, spread out your units near the passage you came through since enemies don't spawn there; then position yourself in front of them to catch all the dragonlings coming at you and AoE them down.

Rinse and repeat. (I did this on Nightmare without any fire resist 3 tries to do it)

I used the potion of life where if you get knocked down you rez back again instantly. I had my healing hawke mage and Anders with Aveline Varric. Aveline kept the high dragon bussy while Varric and Anders took care of the smaller dragons When they was getting swamped I would throw in a few lighting bolts to help. Otherwise i would stay as close as possible to my main tank so the healing aura would help. When she got grabbed by the high dragon bubble her and get ready with a single potion or healing spell.

You can in fact do alot of damage to the high dragon when it sits on the rock where you cant get to, kill the smaller dragons as fast as possible and then fire at it from range with your main tank out of the way to get some stamina and health back.

1. Party set-up should be something like a SnS tank, your 2H Warrior, Anders and a ranged dps of your preference.
2. Fire Resistance like already mentioned. Especially the close range guys.
3. Party Positioning Phase 1: Have you and your tank up there and start the fight. Have your ranged guys as far away as possible, preferably close the entrance where you saw the cut-scene.

Phase 2: Have all of your guys retreat back to the clearing on the right side the the entrance. Have your ranged guys stand at the cliff closest to the dragon. Have your tank and close range stay at the entrance of the clearing to kill the adds and stop them from getting to the ranged guys. Once all the adds are clear, have your ranged guys go to the famous blind spot and unload on the High dragon.

Rinse and Repeat...

There are many videos on youtube for strategies but there are many micro managing involved.

Okay, by the sounds of it my issue is lack of fire resist gear (oh which I have 0 ), no ice runes and I didn't know there was a res?

So basically my question is, which spell/item resses and where do I get my grimey mits on it? My second is where do I get runes and such?

If you have the fire-resist rune recipe you can make them in your estate and have Sandal install them in your armor. Having 90+ % resist will make the fight considerably easier. Warriors can also use the elemental aegis if they have it.

Here's a video that might help.

That's how I did it anyway. It was, honestly, not that difficult. Though a lot of fun.
I did try it once before however when my Mage wasn't a Spirit Healer + Blood Mage combination but rather full Blood Mage and merely had the Creation heal which was quite a bit tougher, and I couldn't manage. But once I 'perfected' my Mage's ability build this was much more doable.

I didn't take that much use of fire resistant gear, I don't think Aveline had any in fact, and neither used a lot of frost damage (other than Merrill's Winter's Grasp). Which, if I did use those, would have made it quite a bit easier as people have stated before. So try and get those.

Oh and make sure whomever you have as your tank to stay in the Dragon's 'deadzone'. As you can see in the video, when Aveline is standing next to him she is almost completely out of harm's way. Keeping control of your 'tank' is very important as with a lot of boss fights.

I had to come back larer than I wanted to beat the Dragon. My focus changed to just keeping everyone alive than to get max damaged and that was a big help. I also had to change from my normal group dynamic by using varric rather than isabela.

Anders' personal tree (top branch) or Mage Hawke's Spirit Healer tree.
Ideally, you shouldn't have to use it.

I did this on nightmare with merrill, aveline, anders, and hawke DW rogueing

This setup made the fight a lot more difficult but I was determined to make it through the game using this setup, so some tips

I did it with 0 fire resist, but looking back some would help, aveline didnt take a lot of dmg but during the air phases the homing fireballs (you can't dodge them) kind of hurt so FR is nice on everyone, at least a little bit.

You really cant melee during ground phases, so if you're using a melee hawke who isnt a tank, like i did, you're just going to have to bite the bullet and use a bow or just sit around during the ground phases and possible run up and hit some cds on the dragon and back off although i wouldnt advise doing this as its a bit risky

Barrier with the improved version is your friend, put it on aveline when the dragon starts to eat her, put it on someone who is low if hte dragon spits a fireball at them during the air phase

Adds were pretty easy with decoy + rogue dps

Elite dragons during the air phase were also pretty easy with the petrify + assassinate + mark of death combo for the 1 hit ko

Other than that it is a long fight, you really need to be able to micromanage, turn the dragon around, keep ranged away, do add duty correctly, etc

Honestly, you don't need fire resistance, albeit fire resistance does significantly increase your chances of an easy win.

BUT

It is very IMPORTANT to not engage in close combat with the High Dragon. He rips anything close to him to shreds.

I beat him on normal and hard mode without difficulty, but I was well prepared with revive and healing potions.

Beat this on hard...first time. All in my party had heavey fire resist. I am a shield warrior. Had anders, Merril, Varric. Was one of the easier boss fights.
