I told her i'd pay her a wage as she'd be working for me but Leandra complained about me taking a slave and hoped i knew what i was doing... I finally got enraged and wished there was an option for me to say, "Mother, i'm paying her a wage, she's not a freaking slave!"
Oh god THIS, a thousand times this!
I always made sure to talk to everyone in the mansion once in a while in order to see if they had anything new to say.
Suffice to say that when Leandra berated me about "the elven slave girl" for the umpteenth time I finally lost it and I actually shouted at her/my computer screen.

I hired her. Poor girl clearly wouldn't have been able to function in the real world on her own. After she gets back to the estate, it seems the option to pay her is optional so I don't think you'll lose sov if you don't want to. I always pay her though. I'm not comfortable with slavery. I'd pay Bodhan and Sandal too if I could. At least in Origins, I could sell him my lootz that I justified that he would turn and sell for alot more then he paid me to take them off of my hands so it was a win for him, lol.
Exactly what I thought. My Hawke is the Champion of the Downtrodden.

Having her serve at the Hawke estate would at least keep her safe and comfortable (unless you roleplay the type of Hawke that ... err ... take advantage of dependents) for the immediate future. Apparantly Orana was so accustomed to her life as a slave that in-game dialogue in Act 3 suggested that she never even stepped out of the estate in the years serving Hawke.

I have to ask though, the mom, says something like, "An elven slave, I hope you know what you're doing." She's not a slave in my Hawke's house, so is this a bug or oversite?
No. Mom never seems to pick up that Orana is a servant, not a slave in Stately Hawke Manor.

Leandra likely worries what people will say, the following is from the codex on Slavery in the Imperium.
If they're lucky, they end up in Orlais, which has only "servants." Most nobles treat them decently because they are afraid of admitting the truth. Orlesians go to great lengths to maintain the fiction that slavery is illegal.
Someone could accuse Hawke of the same behavior, especially she still refers to you as master.
As Orana said, she was always a slave just like her papa and grandpapa before her she doesn't know anything else. Someone talking to her when she goes to the market could easily make the mistake she is still a slave with the way she behaves.
One could say she's still a slave even as a paid servant. She stays or goes at the behest of Hawke, and when you rescure she almost immidately asks if Fenris her new master. She doesn't go work for you for money, she goes because serving a master is the only life she ever knows. In her mind paying her a wage just makes Hawke execptional kind.

into the flesh trade.
Yeah, that happens. She ends up in the Blooming Rose if you just let her go.

Oh god really? Maybe she was practising for the role and that's why her make-up is so dreadful. ![]()

Having her as a slave is good since it makes Fenris' rivalry increase. I like his rivalry bonus stats best.
Therefore it is said that the rival romance or rival relationship with respect is incredible. If you do such a thing, it really is... Let's hire, you get only 5 points friendship points (at A Bitter Pill quest you anyway get ~15 FP, if you want to play believable.)

I love going to bed at night secure in the knowledge that people have been stabbed in the face for the greater good.
so does Hawke I think.
