It happened to me in Act 3 after her mission and she hit 100% rivalry. I hated being mean but I had never flirted and was actually kinda mean to her at points. My Hawke is involved with Fenris. My husband had this happen to him too.

Has anyone else had Merrill show up at their house as though you had initiated a romance? It happened to me in Act 3 after her mission and she hit 100% rivalry. Yea, I had the same thing happening on my rogue-Hawke. I was on the rivarly path with her, I never flirted with her, and suddenly she showed up at the estate. Decided to go for it with her anyway, and then dumped her after sex.
I felt like a monster afterwards.

You're the only person who stuck by her even if they didn't agree with her choices. So maybe she thought she'd give it a try.

Same thing just happened to me!
I'm playing a pro-Templar warrior, in big!love with Fenris, and I've never flirted with her or anyone but my trusty elf. Suddenly she turns up at my house in Act 3, after her personal quest, after I've maxed her rivalry meter... and the only options are heart or break-heart.
Lame.
