Since we come back to the few lines Cullen has to explain himself so frequently, and I have a lousy memory these days, I wrote down some of the ones from Act 1. It's for the purpose of "stuffy scholar's debate," to use Cullen's term from the most astonishing (to me) response below.
My Hawke was a diplomatic mage, but I did Cullen's quest (Enemies Among Us) about as early as I could do it in this PT.
=======================================================================================
Cullen's What's My Line -- Part ITalking to Cullen in order to complete the quest Enemies Among Us; so, after killing Wilmod and after dealing with Tarohne. The following Hawke lines are for a diplomatic Hawke. HAWKE: “I’ve got good news and I’ve got bad news."
Cullen:"What? What is it?"
HAWKE: "The good news is Keran’s safe. The bad news is half your recruits may be possessed by demons.”
Cullen: “Sweet blood of Andraste!”
Macha: demons…? Etc
Keran: It was horrible, mages grrr etc. “They won’t stop until they destroy the Templars and the Chantry forever.”
HAWKE’S CHOICES:1. HAWKE: It’s the templars' fault : “Mages have been systematically abused by the templars for a thousand years”
RESPONSE:Cullen: “How can you say that after what you’ve seen? Mages cannot be treated like people. They’re not like you and me. "
Macha: “Surely that’s a little harsh.”
Cullen: “They are weapons. They have the power to light a city on fire in a fit of pique.
HAWKE’S RESPONSE CHOICES:1.1. HAWKE: There has to be a better way: “I admit, that does reduce their bargaining position. But there must be some middle ground.”
RESPONSE:Cullen: “Perhaps you’re right. Perhaps the mages need better education as to why the Chantry functions as it does. Perhaps they would not go against the will of Andraste herself. I will look into it.”
Cullen proceeds to strip Keran’s commission – you can say yay or nay.1.2. HAWKE: You’re wrong: “Mages are humans … and elves... just like the rest of us”
RESPONSE:Cullen: “Many might go their whole lives thinking that. If even one in ten falls to the lure of blood magic, they could destroy this world.”
Cullen proceeds to strip Keran’s commission – you can say yay or nay. 1.3. HAWKE: You’re right: “The templars have good reason to be vigilant.”
RESPONSE:Cullen proceeds to strip Keran’s commission – you can say yay or nay.2. HAWKE: Hey, I’m a mage (obviously for mage Hawke, only): “Not all mages are like that.”
RESPONSE:Cullen: “True. Not every mage gives in to temptation, but none are ever free of it. At any time any mage could become a monster, from the lowest apprentice to the most seasoned enchanters. Mages cannot be treated like people. They’re not like you and me.”
Macha: “Surely that’s a little harsh.”
Cullen: “They are weapons. They have the power to light a city on fire in a fit of pique.
HAWKE’S RESPONSE CHOICES:
Same as for #1.3. HAWKE: You’re right: “The templars have good reason to be vigilant.”
RESPONSE:
Cullen proceeds to strip Keran’s commission – you can say yay or nay.
4. HAWKE: Whatever; It’s done: “The situation is dealt with. Who is right and wrong is academic.”
RESPONSE:Cullen: “Wrong! This is no stuffy scholar’s debate. This is the central fact of the world that Andraste recognized. *sigh* But I will not preach. Thank you for your service.” (the last said in a rather disapproving voice, like he’s not really that thankful…)
Cullen proceeds to strip Keran’s commission – you can say yay or nay.
