Actually, another question: is there a Cullen Fan Consensus about the Origins end-cards? I've basically dismissed all of the Origins and Awakening end-cards as not-necessarily-canon at this point, but I was wondering if there is any fan wisdom about them that I'm missing.

In my headcanon, Cullen got a note at the end of Origins that read

"Dear Cullen.
Please don't go crazy.
xoxoxo
-Amell"

I think you're right. I don't know about how authorative anyone might be on this fact (i.e I've never heard any dev chime in, altho I guess DG did say that in general, epilogues are "hearsay and rumor"), but I think the DA:O epilogues about Cullen have to be null and void now. Hard to imagine they'd transfer him to Kirkwall if he did the crazy murder rampage epilogue. And, for the non-crazy DA:O epilogue, he clearly didn't take over from Greagoir, since he was the one who transferred him (according to DA2 codex, which of course is probably also hearsay...). I think Witch Hunt says he was transferred to the Chantry at Greenfell for "his nerves." Dunno if that might still fit in, but doesn't seem that there'd really be enough time for that.

Heh, love the end note!

Edit for ToP: My new favorite line of his.

I'd never noticed the change of sword model! In Origins that is an Orlesian style sword I think. I feel so unobservant now - I call Cullen deliberately distracting me with his innuendo.

Still, if it is the Orlesian model, and if it does mean more than a random change by the art team, well, Orlais is where the Divine is and where the Seekers are based, so....

One thing that I was wondering is if anyone considered the idea that Cullen could have already joined the Seekers in secret by the end of DA2...the reason that this came to my mind is that I was looking at some of the pictures on the thread and noticed he has a different sword in Act III...perhaps I am reaching here, but instead of the standard templar issue red and gold hilt he had in Act I, he has in Act III a sword with a black and silver hilt (suspiciously "Seekerish" colors to me Image IPB)...it could be nothing, but I just wonder why Bioware would take the time to change that if it had no significance...hmm...

Welcome! And, whoa, never noticed that!!! Cool! Interestingly, after defeating Meredith he goes back to red it seems (both pro-temp and pro-mage).  Hmm... bug or not? Let the conspiracy theories begin!:bandit::ph34r::wizard: There's lots of support here for the notion of Cullen becoming a Seeker, so you're in good company.

I think you are right about it being a bug...I watched the ending again, and all of the templars' swords change just like Cullen's does...he did consistently have that sword all of act III until the very end whereas the other templars seemed to vary throughout act III...ah, who knows what they intended? I so wanted to make Cullen a secret Seeker... Image IPB

I think it's a bug, because when the final cut scene starts, all NPC who fought Meredith disappear and a pre-set templar party replaces them.

I think during these 7 years Cullen simply leveled up and got a better sword.
In this picure you can see that all templars have that sword:

But again, I have an explanation for every bug! Meredith broke his awesome captain sword with her demonic sword, and Cullen had to loot one of his dead brothers :) Or sent a recruit to fetch him a sword, and recruit brought him and old sword.

Also, today is my cullenp@rn day. And it was just a start...

Oh my, Gala. You have just made my day! Gah!!:o:wub:

And, you know, in your pic above, I just noticed for the first time... Meredith's sword has little thorns up and down the grip. Ouch! No wonder she's crazy... lyrium in the blood?

@R2, ouch, that sword is not for the weak, definitely :o

Hehe, and I've finished the second picture. It will keep me happy if I fail to do what I've planned for September.

You know those nights when your eyes hurt from being tired and playing too much and it's time for bed, but you check the forum one more time and stumble across a Cullen fic and the next thing you know it's 3am? Yeah, those nights make for ugly mornings.

Oh my gala, it seems like it was quite the, er, marathon for you all around yesterday. *ahem* LOL

So, question for the Cullenites. In a mage!Hawke playthrough, at what point do you think he figured out Hawke was a mage?

It seems that after helping him with Wilmod in Act 1, he still doesn't know - due to his "I've heard rumors about you Hawke, I hope they're not true" line (so presumably you did NO casting while fighting beside him against Wilmod, or he's just very unobservant). Then, at the beginning of Act 3, he say the thing about you being the only mage who could see Meredith directly.

So, did he find out from your magic battle extravaganza with Arishok, or does he figure it out earlier, do you think? Does he make any reference in Act 2? Thoughts?

I recall there's a conversation with Cullen if you have Anders in the group where he calls Anders "mage" (in a rather hostile yet strangely sexy tone).  Now, one would assume that he also knows Hawke is a mage by then (Act 2 I think - possibly after Dissent?)

That's my best answer for now - I'll step aside for more learned souls.

I will say this though as a general observation - imho the game makes more sense if you don't play as a mage.  I love being a mage but the story inconsistencies drive me mad.  There is no way Cullen wouldn't hit you on the head with his pommel and drag you off to the Circle after Wilmod, no way.  And the guards at the very start - did they not notice the whole "large circle of flaming death" thing?

I have a theory that the reason Wesley dies in the prologue is that he seems to be the only Templar who can spot a mage quickly.  Even then its only Bethany he challenges - apparently Hawke has points in the 'invisible' school of magic. :P

@Avilia, yeah, it's pretty hard to swallow that no one figures it out and throws your ass in the Gallows. By the end, I can sorta accept the fact that your champion status is special. But at any point in Act 1 or 2 your rather loud pyrotechnics have got to have raised a few red flags. Unless the templars are all very bad at their jobs... That said, in my head, I tend to assume that Cullen's been deflecting for you, because he owes you. I'll have to check out that Anders convo.

@R2, I think everybody finds out about Hawke being a mage after Qunari. First Meredith sees Hawke fighting the Qunari, then all nobles see Hawke fighting the Arishok. Of course, in the begining os act 2 Varric says "everyone knew who she was now" and Anders cries "what if all your money won't be enough to protect you?" but I think Varric means that everyone knew that Hawke was one of Amells, and Anders means that it will be bad if templars discover Hawke's magic now.

So I believe Meredith told Cullen after act 2 about Hawke.

Meredith: "Hey, did you know Hawke was a mage?"
Cullen: "What? Aww, what a shame, such a good person!"
Meredith: "Yes, and that's why we can't arrest her for being an apostate - she's a Champion now :(((("
Cullen: "I know, she sent me an invitation to the party (can I go, please? *puppy eyes*)"
Meredith: "Yes, go, watch her and her apostate friends for the signs of corruption! By the way, Cullen, I thought you happened to fight alongside with her before. How did you fail to notice she was using magic?"
Cullen: "Err, she wasn't. She was hitting things with that glaive or whatever. And I was busy killing shades..."
Meredith: (narrows eyes and pats her sword's hilt) "Very well, I believe you. Dismissed." (after Cullen leaves, to the sword) "Soon, very soon, my precious, this city will be free from the evils of magic and safe for everyone!"

Linky

Oh - I think you can have this discussion with Cullen as soon as you get Dissent from Anders.

Lol Gala - I heard Meredith speaking to her sword in a Wicked witch of the west voice - "You and your little dog too!"

This made me laugh so hard! Yeah, I think you're probably right that that's when everyone figured it out. But couldn't remember if there were any clues earlier.

Awesome, Avilia. Thanks! Gah, gotta figure out how to do videos myself. What do you use, btw? Every time I start to read about how to do it, it gets so complicated/technical that my brain melts.

I'm very low tech as I don't know much about video editing and such.  I use Fraps for the recording and Windows Movie Maker to compress it.  I just let Movie Maker compress it to whatever it decides it should...

Then I upload it to You Tube again letting You tube do its own thing.

lol told you I was low tech :P

Oh and I love those Ask the Knight Captain thingys - hilarious!

 Very much too long ^_^

I've just started Act 3 on my first ever "side with the mages and let the abomination live" playthrough.  I'm using a nice Hawke and everyone's at max approval.  Its all sweetness and roses.

Except - when I went to say hi to Cullen at the start of the Act he gave me a frowny face :crying:    He likes my Hawkes better when they troll Anders.

Image IPB

Anyways - if anyone feels like torturing themselves linky .  I finished Chapter 1 of my new Cullen fic - Transfigurations.  I know, I know, uber dramatic name.  But eh, he's a Templar so I'm sure the Chant will come up at some point.

Ah, poor Cullen looks so sad there, Avilia. :( Is that because you are now "less a friend of the Order" or whatever he says in Act 3 if you side with Orsino? Or is he sad that the Cullen forum went 24 hrs without a post?  ;)

I was reading dragon age confessions on tumblr, which can be hilarious btw, and an interesting one with cullen came up.
