Now don't hit me please. I figured this would go into the spoiler section, but if I am mistaken please move this. I suppose I can hide behind the 'It is my first thread' argument.

I was wondering what everyone already knows about the current specializations available.
I am one of those people that likes to plan their character before they start playing the actual game. I always look at my specialization/class options before I actually start playing... I can't help it!

I am well aware of this page: http://dragonage.wik.../Specialization
But I find it a little bit lacking in the description. it  gives some names of some skills, but  that is mostly it (With the exception of Templar).

Personally I was planning to go for a Mage as my first character (I love mages), and initially I thought for going something like healing / pet control judging from the Character Creator. Spirits and the likes.

But after looking at the specializations; Blood Mage, Spirit Healer, Shapeshifter and Arcane Mage... I am not so sure.
Either Blood Mage, Spirit healer and Shapeshifter sound interesting to me.

At any rate, what do you got planned for your first character?

Rogue --> Assassin --> Duelist :)

Mostly for RP reasons though and because I think that the Assassin and Duelist classes could potentially complement eachother

Rogue -> Duelist -> Assassin/Bard. Still deciding between the bard or the assassin.

The descriptions and the information available at the wiki is, unfortunately, more or less the collective knowledge of the community. For example, it doesn't really state what benefits duelists get - so rest assured that almost none of us know either (neither?). Those that do know are more likely than not under NDA.

As for my own specialization, I'll be going Rogue -> Ranger, mostly for roleplaying reasons. For a second class, I'm still not sure. I'm having problems identifying with any of the other rogue specializations.

Assassin is.. well.. an assassin. Feels very urban, very modern.
Bard is singing and playing.. stuff. Except for the humerous thought of a ranger in the forest, signing while he's stringing his bow.. no.. just no.
Duelist sounds extremely melee-centric and not very rangerish.

So I may have to take a specialization not based on roleplaying, but based on whichever gives the best bonuses. And with so little information on hand, I cannot make a judgement right now.

Alright. Fair enough.

As for a rogue, I pretty much had the same problem. I am definitely going with a Mage as my first, but most likely a Rogue second. And I would very much like to go for an Archer in that case, and besides Ranger... I wouldn't really know either. But at any rate the Mage question is still more important to me... as well.. I will be playing a Mage first and foremost.

 There is more information than just what is in the wiki. It isn't confirmed, but was gathered from files left in the CC that people deciphered. Here is some of the information for the Rogue specializations.  Not sure how this will format, and here is the thread where are the hard work was done

I am pretty interested in the rogue specializations. You don't happen to do some overtime?

I figured I'd squeeze them all into one post.

So... more strings/speculations.

Bard:
Captivate - Duration AoE
Demoralize - Critical Chance, Attack and Damage, Defense Penalty, Placed Impact AoE
Cry of Valor - Mana and Stamina Regen
"The bard begins an entrancing song that stuns hostile targets nearby unless they pass a mental resistance check every few seconds. Continuing the song does not drain stamina, but the bard cannot move or take any other action while singing."

Captivate? 4th talent?

"The bard launches into an epic song of the party's exploits, granting them bonuses to attack, damage, and critical chance. The size of the bonuses are affected by the bard's cunning. The bard can only sing one song at a time."

Demoralize?

"The bard's performance, replete with dizzying flourishes, is designed to distract and confuse. The target forgets who it was fighting and becomes disoriented unless it passes a mental resistance check."

Captivate? 4th Talent?

"The bard sings an ancient tale of valorous heroes, granting the party bonuses to mana or stamina regeneration at a rate affected by the bard's cunning. The bard can only sing one song at a time."

Cry of Valor?

Duelist:
Pinpoint Strike - ><
Upset Balance - Target Slowed
Dueling - Attack Bonus
"The duelist has learned to strike the vitals of an enemy with pinpoint accuracy and from any angle. For a moderate duration, all successful attacks generate automatic critical hits."

Pinpoint Strike?

"The duelist executes a quick move that throws the opponent off balance, imposing penalties to movement speed and defense unless the target passes a physical resistance check."

Upset Balance?

"The duelist focuses on proper form, gaining a bonus to attack while the mode is active. Keen Defense adds a bonus to defense while in this mode."

Dueling?

"The duelist has an uncanny knack for simply not being there when the enemy attacks, receiving a bonus to defense."

Un-named 4th talent?

Assassin:
Mark of Death - Target Marked
Feast of the Fallen ><

"The assassin marks a target, revealing weaknesses that others can exploit. All attacks against a marked target deal additional damage."

Mark of Death?

"The assassin thrives on the moment of death. Stamina is partially restored whenever the assassin fells an opponent with a backstab."

Feast of the Fallen?

"A keen eye and a killer instinct help the assassin exploit a target's weak points. During a successful backstab attack, the assassin gains additional damage based on Cunning."

Un-named #3 or #4 talent?

"Whenever a backstab deals enough damage, the assassin's foe is riddled with bleeding wounds that inflict additional damage for a short time."

Un-named #3 or #4 talent?

Ranger:
Summon Spider - Summoning, Placed Impact
Summon Wolf - Summoning, Placed Impact
Summon Bear - Summoning, Placed Impact
Natural Regeneration - Regeneration
"The ranger calls a large spider to fight alongside the party."

Summon Spider?

"The ranger calls a great forest wolf to fight alongside the party."

Summon Wolf?

"The ranger calls a powerful bear to fight alongside the party."

Summon Bear?

"The ranger has learned to summon stronger companion animals. Animals summoned by a Master Ranger are significantly more powerful in combat than their normal counterparts."

Master Ranger? 4th talent (instead of Natural Regeneration)?

I am torn between a Warrior > Champion> Templar and a Mage > Shifter > any/none

The warrior because then I could build my party with any one I wanted, I wouldn't feel forced to take people to fill the tank role.

The second would be my favorite choice but not knowing when specs become available and how viable certain mage spells are kind of scares me, but I want to be a BEAR!!!

My elves will be Rangers and Duelists. My good human is going to be Axe and shield Champion, maybe also a Templar. My evil human is going to be a reaver no doubts.

My dwarf noble is going to be beserker and my dwarf commoner is going to be an assassin. Bam.

There's the information from the codex as well, but we've held off putting that in the wiki for two reasons.

1) BioWare didn't intend for it to go public.
2) We've been told it's not completely accurate.

Warrior -> Reaver -> Zerker

"I go nuts and eat your face" either as a good Noble Human, City Elf or Commoner Dwarf.

Mage -> Shifter -> XXX

Sounds awesome but what abilities do forms get, how does it scale, weapons etc etc

"I turn into DOTDOTDOT and DOTDOTDOT" - City Elf Female.

Rogue -> Assassin -> Bard

Good old Desperado theme, a guitar case filled with poisons, traps and tools of my trade! Commoner Dwarf

That's exactly my feelings on a rogue. I don't like any of the Rogues they provide, and while I understand it's not completely vital to the game that you bring one, I feel I need one for some reason.

So , as much as I want to be a warrior, I feel almost obligated to be a Rogue. We'll see if I really give a crap about it when the game finally releases, though. :happy:

Edit: I should say, "As of now, I don't like any of the Rogues they provide". I don't know if I like them or not. We'll see.

I want to crush stuff with my shield. Soo, definitely Warrior > Templar > maybe Champion. It's rather satisfying to just giggle as they swing and miss, and you just beat them down. Is it the third yet?

I'll probably go as warrior > champion and maybe templar if I don't have any effective warrior talents to invest in...as a mage maybe I'll go as blood mage because as far as I know no companion has that specialization...as rogue I think I'll go as assasin and probably duelist...bard and ranger don't sound as atractive for combat...

It's called Exploit Weakness.  I found a reference to it in the combat scripts.  It's commented as (Cunning-10)/3 extra damage.  The actual formula looks different but I haven't sat down to try to figure out if they could be the same or not.  Ah.. I just did.  Actually it's a random value between (Cun-10)/15 and (Cun-10)/3 as bonus damage.

ie.  (Cun-10)/3 * .2   through   (Cun-10)/3 * 1

http://social.biowar...tBackstabDamage

float Combat_Damage_GetBackstabDamage(object oAttacker, object oWeapon, float fDamage)
{
    //  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    // Each backstab is an auto crit.
    //  ------------------------------------------------------------------------
    fDamage *= GetCriticalDamageModifier(oAttacker);

    // -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    // Exploit Weakness:  Backstab Damage + max(CUN-10,0) / 3.0
    // -------------------------------------------------------------------------
    if (HasAbility(oAttacker,ABILITY_TALENT_EXPLOIT_WEAKNESS))
    {
        float fBase = MaxF(0.0,(GetAttributeModifier(oAttacker,PROPERTY_ATTRIBUTE_CUNNING)/3.0)) ;
        float fMod = MaxF(0.2,RandomFloat());
        fDamage += (fBase * fMod);
    }

    return fDamage;
}

I want to take blood magic for my mage, but it looks useless and inferior to other specializations, judging by spell descriptions. (

Wow, noone wants to be a battlemage, by taking Arcane warrior? :) I'd love to wear heavy plates while chucking out deady spells :D But what to take as secondary spec? I'm leaning toward spirit healing, to be a backup healer, but who knows...

Warrior --> Champion --> Templar (optional)

I'm thinking going something as off tank and specialised on party buffing and crowd control...and if my character is strong enough by level 16 I'll take the templar specialisation otherwise if I stil have to put in the weapon and shield or warrior talents I'll pass...

Assuming you have an NPC healer, Bloodmage/Shapeshifter is one of the better ones I can think of. Consume away your hp, refilling it as needed via blood sacrificing ranger pets or disabling bloodmagic/drain life. And when your PC gets too much aggro and is forced to melee, change to swarm mode which makes your still full mana pool your new life bar while your normal attacks replenish your diminished health from spells.

That said, I'm doing a 'good' playthrough first time in (on nightmare to boot), so blood mage is a no go. So while I'm taking specializations, I'm only taking them for the bonuses, of which spirit healer and shapeshifter gives the best options.

2 specializations is rather pointless to me since you desperately need talent points. Not many to go around if you want to max your weapon and class talent trees.
