Not sure if this belongs here, but for its biggest part, it does.

So, I started as a Mage and I want to side with the Templars, to unlock the remaining trophies. Dumb, I know, but I always start as a tank, and I sided with the Mages there.

My questions are: I want to romance Merrill again, but if I always choose the Templar-favoring option, will she not turn hostile? And second question, can a Mage side with the Templars? I assume you can, I can't see why not.

Thanks in advance ^_^

you can side with templars, the only companion who leaves despite friendship/rivalry levels or dialogue choices is sebastian if you do not kill anders. Anyone else can be talked into staying with you if you have a high level of friendship/rivalry.

edit: pretty sure anders will side with mages if you side with templars and keep him alive.  Not sure because i killed him when i sided with templars for obvious reasons.

Thank you very much, that pretty much sums it all up. I don't have the DLC so no Vael for me :D On this playthrough, I'll execute Anders as well, since I'll be the primary healer.

As a dalish elf, Merril's issues aren't directly related to the templars anyway, it's about your stance on forbidden magic and lore.

Merril pointed out that Templar leave the Dalish mages alone so long as the Dalish keep migrating, which seemed to indicate that Templars are a problem for them too if they stay in one place too long. And she admitted that she would be vulnerable since she was a pariah and now living among the city elves, so she has a dog in that fight.

And yes, Merril isn't too happy with you if you play a Templar, so be prepared for a high rivalry score. You even get rivalry points if you are mage friendly yet hostile to blood magic and "forbidden" knowledge, though you can still earn enough friendship to overcome this.

I suppose I won't do the quest for Tarohne's tomes either, I need to destroy them all for the demon to appear, and Merrill gets a nice -10 for each one if she's in the party... Thanks for the detailed answers, although I feel like I missed a lot of in-game small details about Merrill's character :P

You don't have to destroy the tomes. The other choices don't make her angry.

I tested this in my last play. My friendship with Anders was at 100% (no romance), and I sided with the Templars. When I chose the option of "come with me," he said he would rather die than fight alongside the Templars. The dialogue options then reverted to the previous 2 and the "come with me" was removed. So my only options were to allow him to leave or kill him.

[edit]

Hm just thought of something...

I decided to kill him. But if I had left him alive, would he appear later on in the fight with the mages? D:

Yes, he comes later after you clear the courtyard of mages. Saying that He wishes that this turn out differently, and asks you to reconsider. You then get a Dialogue choice. I forgot the options but after wards he faces you with more mages I think.

(Anders died in about 2 attacks for me, It was funny)

Oooh I'll have to try this next time. Although it was difficult for me to side with the templars in the first place. I'm not sure I can do that again lol...

can you side with the templars as a mage? Mage is my next/third play through, and I wanna side with the templars without having to fight Bethany. the only way to do this is on a mage play through. anyone know?

Well, for achievement purposes I did side with the templars first and reloaded the game back sided with the mages and that is how i would want my hawke to be

There are always demons lurking around... the ones from fade are quite noticeable than the demons that prowl inside a human.

Being a Blood + Force Mage, the thought of Wynne, Morrigan and Anders being around has always been a contribution worth consideration to side with the templars... I eventually opine that the templars would be the tyrants of the future if the mages did not rebel as needed...

My first character in DAO was a AW Blood Mage and an AW used the beneficial forces of the fade for the fade shroud ability enabling him to render more resilience and damage than warriors themselves.

Supporting the templars did not seem much different in supporting Loghain Mac Tir from the Origins there is no way i did find that contributing to a storyline that has Hawke the way he is in it
Losing his Darling Sister Bethany is in itself a great hardener for Hawke. Hawkes' father was a mage. So i wanted the story to go that way...

Perhaps the Tevinters Magistrates did bring in the Darkspawn but that is when the invention and discovery of Grey Wardens came into picture.. The clear history of the Dark City denotes that it was due to the selfishness and hunger for power did the Mages invoke being Darkspawn. These are clearly the very gates that are needed for the fade demons to get into a human world. I don't find these obsessive power hungry oppressive templars being spared by the demons and the mages being put to an end. I would not want new a breed of templar darkspawn rising from the earth... Most of the lesson I get from the broken circle quest in DAO is that there quite a few templars that were also trapped easily in the fade as well as in the desire demon's trance. So I tend to feel if there is any hope to fight these demons, it comes from the place of their origin -- MAGIC....

Merill is not really on my favorite list though i did romance her once... But she was never practical and proves to be of lesser mettle than Morrigan. Could have helped Merill if she did not turn on me in the fade when the demon offered her a dream.

Well Maybe in a rare viewpoint I did take this game on a personal Level... but that's how i play them and enjoy them to the fullest.
thanks for reading

I ran an "anti-magic" character and was surprised that merrill joins you in the end when you join the templars. Last time I saw her she said she didn't want to see me again, and now she helps me kill mages.

Rivalry is not necessarily a bad thing in this game.  You can still romance a character on the rivalry path and characters will still stand by your side as a rival.

Yeah, a romanced Merrill followed me, plus a negative Fenris (not 100% rival) sided with me when I touched the sensitive slavery matter. Same for Aveline when I joined the Mages.

@Abispa
But on my first playthrough I kept a tome, then destroyed the rest (I thought it'd give me loot) and no demon appeared. I need to select the same option for all I suppose?
