First tip: check http://dragonage.wik...on_Age:_Origins
Use the search engine there to look up specifics.
With mage tactics, I'd have them cast heal at 75% health rather than the default 25%, regeneration at 90% health and force field at 50% health. Having a healer mage with access to force field will save lives on numerous occasions.

- Don't ignore the behaviour column in the tactics menu. Remember to have behaviour set to "ranged" for archers and mages.
- Talk to every named NPC.
- It is possible to get through the entire game on normal difficulty without having to craft any potions, poisons or traps (though some minor sidequests may require these skills). Also, recipes and raw ingredients cost money (and gold is limited unless you use exploits). I'm not saying "don't craft"; I'm just saying that, if you're frugal, you're better off putting your skill points in coercion, pickpocketing, survival, or combat training.
- Auto-leveled characters are feasible, but not as good as they could be.

I have been playing for about 3 weeks and found the foollowing useful. Note that I play the xbox though.
- Every time you compare an item (pressing X button), you can switch the party member you're comparing against by the right/left buttons. This makes purchasing/equipping characters much easier.
- In the tactics screen, consider putting heal ally (for mages) and/or drink healing potion depending on health.
- Bring the radial menu during combat (left trigger button) - you can now change characters with the buttons and choose which opponent to attack or to drink healing potions.
- To create potions/poisons, bring up the radial menu and choose poisons/potions (if you have the skill) and you'll be able to create potions/poisons.
- The above can be done for any character that has that skill. I advise on having one party member expert in poisons, one in potions, etc. No need to waste skill points for the same skill for different party members.
- While initially it annoyed me, take the time to speak to you party members. It is sometimes amusing and just plain funny. Also, you'll may gain approval ratings which may open new quests and improve the party member abilities.
- Be careful on how you spend your money. I advise on not upgarding equipment if it is only a minor difference in defense/attack/damage. Upgrade equipment only if it is significantly better.
- You can instruct party members to hold position using the radio menu. It is very helpful when disarming traps.
- Pay careful attention to dialogues and the options you can choose from. It can make a lot of difference.
- Read plenty of discussiosn about character builds. It may be overwhelming at first, but it is worth while.
- I suggest starting an "experimental" game. Choose the class and origin you do not intend on playing. Just do battles, compare equipment, learn tactics for other party members. Skip all the dialogues and choose radnom answers - don't spoil the fun for your "real" character. Once you learn the basic controls, how to level, how to control/instruct other party members, start a "real" game. This may take a few hours/days. I restarted the game 3-4 times. After days of playing, I realized all of a sudden how I didn't level correctly, or failed to realize importance of talking to party members, etc.

If you are playing on the PC, abuse the Tab button.
