I've just finished the Deep Roads on my Berserker Vanguard, and I found that with my tactics setup, the Dragon boss became a total pushover, so I decided to make something to help out others. I've seen some say the fight is tedious/boring or that they have to kite to get it done, and I'm here to make a small guide on how to clear this fight with ease on Nightmare. I realize that not everyone thinks it's difficult, but for those who do, and for those that want to shave some time off of it, I made this. I'd imagine this would work even better on an SnS Warrior, so slightly modify to suit your class as necessary.

Strategy

-Draw hate from the dragon onto yourself, and try to move him away from your companions.

-The dragon's attacks can easily be sidestepped with proper preparation, but as a rule of thumb, be careful about taking more than one swing at a time when the aggro is on you, chances are you'll get hit.

-When Merrill casts Horror or Crushing Prison, it will be stunned momentairly. Take this opportunity to activate Cleave and lay on some hits to fish for a stagger to set Merrill up for Chain Lightning.

-When the adds drop, use your preferred method of dealing with trash to take care of them. The second wave is upgraded in rank, so a CCC like Stagger -> Chain Lightning is preferrable.

-Hitting him in the back slows him down a TON, which is great for when you lose aggro, and he goes after your companions.

Repeat steps 1-4 as needed, and the dragon will be dead in no time. No war of attrition or kiting necessary. Merrill is your MVP here, so do your best to keep her safe.

The OCD in me wanted to keep pausing the game to run Varric away! Well done though.

I don't like to pause if it isn't absolutely necessary, so I was holding off.

Best believe I was sweating bullets though, I half expected Varric to just jump in the dragon's mouth or something.

Can you explain what this tactic, set for Anders, will do:

"Enemy: Target of Hawke - Haste"

Looks like you're casting haste on an enemy...what am I missing? Thanks.

edit: btw- I've been following your build I love it so far.  I'm going to try it myself. Tx for the help.

Will cast Haste when Hawke is targeting something. It is I believe to not waste it while Hawke is away from an enemy.

I don't get this. Why deactivate Panacea if an ally is dead? You need it for Regroup (in theory, the AI will cast it even if deactivated), but it wouldn't be active then.

I'd do it the other way around: inactive by default, and activate it when needed. Not sure what condition I'd use to deactivate it, though.

Nice guide, BTW.

That seems like it would be easy enough, I've already got a video of it recorded.

Might just be a two-hander thing, I'm not sure.
