I'm about half way through the new book and something that the Architect said caught my attention.  He mentioned that the taint can be passed on to the children of those infected.

This made me wonder if a Grey Warden was to say find love with a party member, we know they can have a relationship and even marry if they choose, but presumably any children they have would also be tainted.

Would this force the children into a life as a Grey Warden?

Would any Grey Warden ever inflict that upon a child of their own?

Would the child progress faster and become corrupted sooner leading to a very short life before heading to the Deep Roads?  Or maybe it would be diluted and they would still live very long lives?

What about if two Grey Wardens had children together? (Yes I've got my eye on Alistair Image IPB)  Would that produce a super Darkspawn fighting machine or merely a very shortlived sprog?

Just idle musings that I thought some may be interested in discussing, if not I'll slink back to my corner and keep talking to myself Image IPB

I advise you to finish reading the book, because anything we might say here...even if we would for example want to prove a point about it not progressing faster would be a pretty big spoiler for the end of the book :P

Arconi is right. Better finish the book. I will give away something small and insignifigant, though.

Grey Wardens have an incredibly low chance to conceive.

Ah, I didn't really think it would play that big a part in the book, guess I should finish reading it then Image IPB

Yes you should. I envy you. I wish I could read it again for the first time. It wasn't a legendary book, but it was rather good. Have fun.

Eh, if someone comes into the spoiler forum who says they're in the middle of reading the book, I don't think it's nice to ruin it for them, even if they knew that spoiler abound in these parts.

Now, if the OP comes back after reading, and wants more info, then he's gotta realize that there are perhaps WAY more spoilers out there than what he was asking for.

It's a very interesting (and relevant) topic, however.  :bandit:

This. I refuse to spoil something like a book even in spoiler forums. Because...I'm weird? I don't know.

Ok I've read it now, so spoil away!!!

Lol, tbh I wouldn't have flipped out if someone had said anything spoilerific, I'm very impatient and don't like waiting for info, even it's only at the end of a book!

Back on topic, now upon reading the epilogue it is implied that the child will have a normal life but from what the Architect said earlier they should still be tainted so do they get the benefits without the wasting?

And I'm still curious about two Grey Wardens getting it on, what effect would that produce on a child?

Now I know that Fiona said Grey Wardens were unlikely to produce children but surely it can't be impossible for two Grey Wardens?

Now I know there are no definate answers but I just wanted other peoples views really :)

Heavy Spoiler...in the spoiler forum I know, it's weird

Alistair is Maric's and Fiona's son...there...I spoiled it for you. And I'm guessing that's the reason why Duncan wanted to recruit him, he has the taint anyway so it doesn't matter

Ah, the thought had already crossed my mind so not overly suprised.

So he got tainted on top of being tainted?  Is that why he's so super awesome? Image IPB

Nah. not really... I just think that's the reason Duncan picked him above people who were better suited for the position. Better to take someone who is doomed anyway :P

He may have been a special case and not have been tainted at all. If he took on all the aspects of his father, then there's a chance the Taint wouldn't have been passed on. For all we know, he could be immune to the taint because of his mother. Most of this stuff is as new to Grey Wardens as it is to us. They don't have much in the form of scientific research when it comes to this sort of thing. Sure, mages could do it, if they were so inclined. But for the most part, Grey Wardens seem to just take things as they come and then write it down. Although, if the calling is any indication they tend to leave important things out. ;)

That would be a cruel twist of fate indeed, especially if Duncan knew that and conscripted him anyway!

I would guess that Duncan didn't know, I don't recall anybody mentioning a way to check if the child has the taint

I dunno, if Grey Wardens can sense Darkspawn and Darkspawn can sense Grey Wardens, it would figure that Grey Wardens can sense other Grey Wradens (ie tainted ones)

Thenn I would guess, the reason for Duncan picking Alistair over all the others is because he could sense the taint :D

Duncan was around for Fiona's pregnancy and would know how she survived and miraculously recovered from the taint, so perhaps he knows something about Alistair's condition that we don't.

Yeah I agree, can't imagine Duncan would do that a child of his closest friends and if he's tainted anyway at least he can do some good and would be kinder on Alistair as he would view the taint as his choice not realising that he had it all along.

Maybe he has slightly more resistance to it, being born with it, dunno maybe gives him an advantage?

If pregnancy is the cure all to the taint then all the female Wardens need to busy themselves having children!

Sorry guys, I guess ur screwed Image IPB

I wonder if Fiona would still be immune to the taint afterwards though?  Or if she wanted to fight Darkspawn if she would have to drink their blood again?

Well we know that Alistair can potentially become king, so I would assume that rules out any possibility of him having a super short life. He very well may have been tainted from birth, but somehow I have a feeling that he may have been born with a resistance to the taint, whilst not actually being tainted. Perhaps that resistance is strong enough to counteract the Joining as well. Only time will tell, I suppose.

Maybe Alistair will be a special Warden too, and not have to go through his calling? Maybe the secret here is that, Wardens are unlikely to conceive, but when they do the baby gets all the benefits and no downside? Maybe the whole situation is a result of her accelerated exposure?

I haven't read the book yet (my local bookstore doesn't even have it on it's records) . But just because someone says something is possible doesn't mean it happens EVERY SINGLE TIME.
