I've looked through all of the Isabela/Sebastian bug discussions and couldn't find an answer.

The bug that causes progressive loss of attack speed and damage reduction, does it only apply to the friendship buff or would this bug also come into play with their rivalry buffs?

In other words, could I avoid problems with the two by going the rivalry path instead of friendship?  Or should I just keep them both in the neutral?

I had problems with the Isabela friendship bug in my first playthrough and had to restart 11 hours of gameplay so I would really like to avoid this problem altogether.

Correct. If you get their rivalries (which are different buffs entirely), then you won't encounter the problem.
