Amid the other (good) changes made to the DA sequel, I feel voicing Hawke has detracted from the players immersion. I understand the amount of time and money related to voicing Hawke with the amount of silent dialogue the main character had in the first DA but, overall, I feel that this is one of the bigger problems that plagued DA2.
I always felt that the level of immersion you
get from Dragon Age was always best noticed when compared to Mass
Effect. I don't have any problem at all with Mass Effect's dialogue
system but I don't think it serves Dragon Age the same way, not when what we were given in the original was great depth. The simplicity of boiling down a 1-12 choice dialogue tree into 6 different reactions and 1-5 questions ruins the players immesion by forcing him or her to see the framework of the game's dialogue. For example. In DA:O, When you progress the dialogue, you are not being told that you are saying it with anger or humility all you are shown is what exactly you will say. As a result, the conversation is more nebulus and you're not sure how a character will react.
Aside from the simplifying of dialogue, there are just fewer opportunities to converse. You can't talk to as many people. Most NPC's exist in the game world just to be there for one quest and cannot be interacted with in any other way, you can't interact with merchants anymore and my most hated change; How little you get to interact with the characters you spend YOUR ENTIRE TIME PLAYING WITH. Honestly, not being able to interact with your companions until you hit a checkpoint in the story and are given a quest for it, randomly, is absurd and forces you to see the framework again. From a realism perspective, sure, maybe it's not the best idea to have a conversation about Merril's past just after slaughtering a dragon, while still in the field but that doesn't mean we could not simply go to their individual little nooks and crannies to have a legitimate, character developing discussion with them. The gift system has also been ruined, in my opinion. In DA:O you had to pay attention to the interactions you had with the characters and when you find a present to think back to the conversation you had and you think "Sten would like this." rather than receiving a quest for it.
On the subject of narrative. I honestly do not have a problem with the story or the ending, as some people do. I've learned to take what Bioware gives us as over-arching story and trust that it will fit somewhere. What irked me was segments of the story being lost in "fastforward" cutscenes. Sure, the whole story takes place over 6 years but it makes the player feel removed from the world, much like you would if you were in a coma for two 3 year segments.
There are plenty of other problems with DA2 that do not relate to this forum. i.e. Recycled environments and creatures. Not many choices for armor. Or whatever else you can think of but, Bioware is best known for the kind of immersion I feel is lacking from DA:2 and thus, I am more concerned for the future of Dragon Age and by extension, Bioware games.
I welcome all informed and sociable comments and opinions.
My hatin' on narrative and character related changes in DA2 thread.
