I will go with mage, mage, mage and bard, if there was one more mage, i'd go with mage x 4.
i don't know if that's possible, or if i'll get seriously owned by forst giant rat that attacks us, but i will try until it becomes impossible for me to continue.
i might change depending on how much i like/hate the characters personalities.

I don't want to be a healer if i'm going mage... i want to be walking death.
However, since my mage char will be "evil" and will be grouped with Morrigan (not wynne), then I see no problem in putting her in the healing role. In this game there aren't many healing spells, and if you don't care about buffs then she should be able to fill the healing role.
As far as tank goes, assuming you want one spot for dps (zev/lel/dog), you only have one spot for a tank. I don't have a doubt that Alistair or Sten will be able to eat up the dmg by themselves. However, Shale seems like the best meat-shield in the game and if you wanted him it would probably make your life easier.

I suppose you could shapeshift Morrigan but I'm not sure how well the beast forms hold aggro and how viable that option really is.
It was stated by team bioware at the competition that the spirit form had a special ability that would put one enemy in some form of prison spell that would slowly drain the health of the target and also heal the mage. So tactically if you had 3 mages you could use that form with two mages to lockdown two targets.
There is a similar spell in the mind line of spells, but I think that is just a lockdown/stun with no damage.

I don't think a Rogue is needed for locks, at least not during active adventure
Think of it this way. If DAO is like other Bioware games, you'll be able sometimes swap party members on the map, and if not, exit the map and come back in with a different party.
Ergo, clean out the map's enemies with your tank and mages, then come back in with the rogue and unlock/disarm all the chests.
Now, I'm sure there are locked doors too, but we already know an all-warrior party is possible, so every door central to plot should be bashable or have a key somewhere. There might be some hidden baddies in side rooms though.
Really, the hardest part about not having a rogue will be not being able to disarm floor/door traps. But your party can still find the traps with a few skill points. So you can go around them and have your rogue come in and disarm them later. Sometimes you'll probably just have to take the damage, but hopefully summons can set off floor traps, so you can just waste a little bit of mana.

That's pretty neat, but do you really want more than one mage taking the shapeshifter specialization? Dragon Age could quickly turn into the Animorphs show, Morrigan Spider-form go!

I've been planning out my party structure for around a month now, and let me tell you I've sweated the issue. I'm planning my first playthrough as a Human Mage on Hard mode, and because I am expecting it to be a challenge I want to make sure I have a solid group and I don't have to do too much metagaming (reloading 5 times every fight, swapping about party members, etc.) I firmly believe that if I build my group right and play well I can progress smoothly through this difficulty without having to trade out for party members I don't want or being too cheesy with the game engine.
Saying that, here's my plan.
1. Main character = Human Mage, specialize as Arcane Warrior / Blood Mage
a. Focus on direct damage / self centered AoE spells (such as Miasma, Mana Clash)
b. Will put some points into constitution so between that and his armor should be much tougher than a normal mage. Will also take a pip into healing so he can act as a backup healer when necessary.
2. Second Caster = Morrigan, specialize in debuffing / support casting (with at least 1 line in damage spells)
a. Pretty sure she enters your party with the Shapeshifer Specialization so in endurance fights she will be able to hop over to another form to help mitigate any damage she might take. In sprint fights, she can stay caster and dish out some mean damage and support the rest of my party.
3. Main Tank = Sten or Alistair, 2h or sword+board respectively depending on how vital it is
a. Thinking I can use Sten with a 2h sword and be ok considering the dedicated support caster / backup healer. Will have to decide in gameplay how well this works out.
4. Point Damage = Leliana, probably as an archer who can stay well out of combat and still do damage
a. Taking her along because I want the character / want the rogue skills in my party for disarming traps and picking locks.
b. I want to keep her at a distance because I will have 2 mages in the party able to lay down some hellfire, and to minimize the damage I deal to myself through friendly fire I want as few people "in the furnace" as possible.
Basic Strategy:
My main tank tries to hold as much attention as he can. Leliana pours arrows into the most dangerous target. My main character and Morrigan will plow the field with area of effect spells and combinations, trading off between supporting eachother's casting routine (Grease + Fireball, Tempest + Blizzard, etc) to Morrigan focusing on healing and my main character joining the melee to help slow down any enemies that break through.
Theoretical Pros and Cons
Pro
Dual casters should provide for lots of magic and spell combinations
High damage party with the ability to be versatile with who is in / out of melee combat
Con
Morrigan may not get the most use out of her Shapeshifting powers if she is always healing and buffing my group
My main character is not going to be as durable as a 2nd Warrior

Selzurius,
A very interesting strategy you have there, I have a simlar build in mind but mine differs by with the focus of my main char and Morrigan.
Both me and Morrigan will have just two points in healing, and the rest split in the damage quarters. Ie what I take Morrigan wont etc.
