The darkspawn probably ate it.

i thought the devs actually confirmed he was dead?

Duncan's last sight was an axe coming at his head when he was badly wounded.
And if he did survive, it probably would have been him there to guide the Warden and Alistair in the end, not Riordan.

This. Duncan didn't seem like the kind of guy who would be ok and then be like 'ehhhh... Riordan's got it' and leave

What if, Duncan became one of the awoken Darkspawn and still survives in some capacity in that state? It would explain why there was no body in Return to Ostagar.
(this is just me speculating)

Awakened Darkspawn were darkspawn to begin with. A Darkspawn Hybrid would be different.

Yeah, would be interesting to say the least though.

what if at that moment a grey warden griffon appeared and saved duncan while he was wounded?
True it says in DA lore that there extinct but lets be honest there are speculations about flemeth and even high dragons so i wouldnt be surprised if there was a lone grey warden griffon that was still alive!

I thought this thread would say that it really WAS a squirrel attached to his face, and that he indeed was not cool enough to have such a boss looking beard.

As a good movie once said. You can wish in one hand, and crap in the other. Now see which one fills up first.
But seriously, Duncan's dead. He got like what? Crushed AND run through?

I am 100% certain that a Bioware official said that he is dead. If we see him again then it will be in a pre-Ostagar game.

I'd be rather disappointed if he was alive. No offense to the character, but a death should be a death.

Even if he hadn't taken the axe to the facehole, he'd have been dead in the Deep Roads soon enough.
He served his purpose. Let him go.

Duncan is dead. He wasn't all that much of a wonderful character to start with. I would avenge Ser Jory and rip off Duncan's head myself.

No, actually, he didn't know the risks. That's the whole point.

If Lilianna can survive an pair of short swords looping her head off, Duncan can survive.
It just depends on the fancy of the next story writer.

I doubt he's coming back ... what I would like is a Harry Potter style near-death trip into the Fade so my Warden can sit down and have a chat with him. Or perhaps his ghost comes to lead Alistair and my Warden to their calling o_O I have far too grand ideas for my Warden's calling including charging into the deep roads beside her husband (Alistair) with the ghosts of Grey Warden's running with them

i say another blight is in order
but a huge massive one where mages and templars must stand together and hawke and the hero of ferelden must unite all that. Also an army of grey wardens is what the first game missed out on
