As a younger brother, I can totally relate to Carver. I'm not saying he's not an ass, but it is indeed not all that easy to live in an oder brother's shadow. That's why I find his character utterly realistic.
Well I grew up an only child. You know all those times your brother got something you didn't? Or you had to share things?
Yeah, that NEVER happened with me. On Christmas day the entire living room was littered with toys, All MY toys. Center of the universe = me, and if some lick spittle little nothing of a brother can't drop to his knees in respect, then he needs to go away.

Also, there are some great conversation options during his personal quest when you give him the letters your father sent that templar named Carver whom Carver is named after. You can call him a self centered brat and so on. It's just freaking awesome. You can actually humble him.

I mean, Bethany seemed a bit bland to me, sure she was my sister and sweet and all but, eh, not too interesting. At least I could be rude to Carver and get interesting results.
I didn't like him, but I sure did like my interactions with him.

I've noticed similar personalities of siblings of advanced children as well as those of children with special needs. Children aren't stupid, they KNOW if sibling is getting either preferential treatment or is overly protected, and it only makes it worse when they realize that a parent's attention is a consolation prize to keep up their self esteem. Unfortunately, we never really see enough of the Hawke family to see if that is the case with them, but the personality fits.

Agreed, next to Varric he was my favorite companion overall. It was easy to relate to him since I knew where he was coming from. Although my sister wasn't brutally smashed to death by an ogre :0

I too am a younger brother and I can't relate at all to Carver. I'm more inclined to believe Carver is having a rebelious stage combined with a touch of "I'm not special" due to a lack of magical talent and pent up hatred because his family always has to make special considerations for Daddy, Big brother and his twin sister. (Running away from Templars is what all the popular kids are doing)
Carver can and has proven himself as a capable swordsmen yet he fails to realise his own abilities. The only time anyone is in someone else's shadow is when they believe they are. Thus you have an ass with a chip on his sholder the size of Fort Drakon.

Fenris: Mr. Broody McBrood.
The rest of the characters I like, love, or respect.

My second favorite is the conversation you have with him when he blames you for Bethany and almost immediately knows he crossed a line. The animation and voice acting in that scene is top-notch.

And I also agree: To get the most out of Carver, send him off with the Grey Wardens. It's a very satisfying conclusion to their relationship.

Otoh, playing as Hawke he was a real pain in the ass (felt sorry for my older and hope I never been as much of a jerk as Carver with them lol).

QFT! The scene is amazing. He knew that my Hawke wanted to backhand him through the room and you actually could hear it in his voice.
One of the very few moments i actually liked Carver.

The tension between Hawke and Carver is probably one of the best and most realistic things about DA2.
This. Bethany is boring. I loved Carver more for being a pain: it made him more believable as a brother. I tried pandering to his tastes, hoping to get him full friendship, but it's impossible. They made it impossible as a plot device, because he'd never join the templars otherwise. But my Carver always joins the Wardens.
Love the line when you meet Fenris and he goes all snarky on my mage-y-ness, "If you have a problem with my sister, you have a problem with me."
He's a jerk because he's worried about you.

I only have one mage and havent played it very often but from what I have seen he gets aggressive with me thinking he can kick my ass just because Iam a mage. I just want to set his hair on fire from what I have seen.Sid66 wrote...

But I loved talking with him and bringing him along, so I could tell him to shut the hell up whenever he said something and hearing my companions call him out on being a ****** and whatever
I guess he kinda has a point.....

Yes, Fenris' banter with Varric is extremely funny and his banter with Sebastian is funny because Sebastian peels him back layer by layer like a onion. He pretty much gets Fenris to admit he believes in the Maker.Noatz wrote...
He's a proud guy, was a member of King Cailan's army etc. Wants to be his own person. Now hes constantly overshadowed by his brother/sister. So yes hes a dick, but you can understand why in a way, and he has some redeeming features (like when he stands up to Meredith in the end). A good character.Renepiu wrote...
