I loved Carver and found him to be one of the best and most believable companions in the game. He's also one of the rare few who shows character development at all, which says a lot considering he's not there for half the game. I felt sorry for him, and loved that I had the option to knock some sense into him through dialogue choices. Yes, he's a bit of a ******, but he's so very human. I liked him far better than Bethany, who I found to be dull and a bit shallow.

To begin with I hated Carver, but as the story Progresses I can see his point, hes in the Shadow of his 2 Sisters and father (if you play Mage) and who knows how many times did they move to avoid Templars?
(dunno why but while playing DA2 I find a Fem Hawke Mage fits better).
My First play through took him to deeproads (he died Anders was being a prat so didn't take him)
Second Playthrough left him behind and was surprised to see him as a Templar (but I think he did that due to being named after that nice templar that helped Hawkes Father)
My Next play through I will take him and Anders to the deeproads
I found replaying with my Mage is more intersting than replaying with a Rogue or Warrior only played non-mage 1 playthrough each, starting my third Mage playthrough.

I also was a little taken aback by Carver at the beginning of the game, but at the end of the game where he leaves the Grey Wardens and comes back to check on his sister, brought tears to my eyes.I liked the fact that he starts with a high rivalry as siblings don't always get along. He shows a lot of character development and as other people have stated he is young and a little angry at the start of the game. At the end of the game when he talks about how he has grown, is proud to be a warden, and how much he cares for his sister it really got me.Now, I am having trouble starting a playthrough as anything but a mage because I don't want to see Carver die.I'd love to see carver make a cameo in a future DA installment.

He's one of the best characters. If I was in his shoes I'd be fed up as well. Living in a family of apostates and having to suffer due to them. While at the same time always feeling like you're in the shadow of your older brother.
And his banter with Anders was just priceless.
Anders: "You don't like me cause I'm a mage"
Carver: "No, it's not cause you're a mage, it's cause you won't shut up about it"

I didn't like Carver until after he lived through the Deep Roads and I saw him in the endgame. The boy had become a man.

I wish I could trade his life for Bethany while being a mage. We'd make such a great duo. He's just an emo who wants attention.

I was apathetic toward Carver, but grew to appreciate him. I originally preferred Bethany, but didn't miss her at all once she was killed or taken to the Gallows. And this game is SO much better if YOU are the mage.

Bethany is boring.
Carver challenges me and is generally more fun to listen to.

The tension between Hawke and Carver is probably one of the best and most realistic things about DA2.
Carver is a Pus (See what I did). In the beginning when Wesley does the "the order dictates" bit, if you tell him you are sticking with your flesh and blood aka Carver's own damned twin sister, Carver has an issue with this. No morale bastard.
Even one of the all-time greatest TV villains JR Ewing wouldn't let anyone outside the family mess with his family. Carver is lower than that. And if you play a mage, he only gets worse.

Or it could be because Hawke is being a moron and turning down help when a bunch of monsters are bearing down on them.

Yeah, he's a very original character, because NONE of the other companions disagree with you in any way.
Anders doesn't b*tch and moan if you're against mages, Fenris doesn't b*tch and moan if you are FOR mages, Isabela doesn't disagree with you on the fate of a certain relic, Merrill doesn't b*tch and moan if you're against blood magic and demons, Sebastian doesn't get uppity and pissy if you are against the Chantry OR in favour of him taking his place as a rightful ruler, Aveline doesn't disapprove if you follow a life of crime and skulduggery, and Varric doesn't disagree with you for being aggressive in most conversations.
No. Clearly we needed more rivalry and disagreements. We were obviously missing that.

Carver does it in a more amusing way than the angsty Anders or Fenris who are absolutely insane.
Carver is just a jerk. I like jerks.

No argument there. If it was up to me, I'd have replaced all three with new characters. And Merrill, too.

See, I wouldn't have minded Carver if he was a funny a-hole, but he's just an annoying one. He wasn't a love to hate character for me, he was just a tool that i hated. And don't even get me started on the eye roll worthy moment of realization at the end of the game if he becomes a grey warden.
Overall I liked Bethany better, but both are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to companions.

Hey guys thanks for all the responses to this post. I like Bethany she sweet and when you make her a warden, to me she comes back a bit tougher.

I love to hate him. It's a nice change to have a companion who disagrees with you and isn't afraid to show it. The way he goes on with his jealous and sarcastic prattle is very fitting for a younger brother. There's a lot of tension brewing what with being born into a family of apostates, not being "special", and etc as stated in his codex entry.
Carver was very grating, yes, but he's one of the more realistic characters in the game. He wins in that regard.
