If you do Carver's personal quest were you find out the origin of his name, him joining the templars makes a lot more sense.  As Ser Carver of the Templars was the one who helped your dad to escape Kirkwall

I love to hate him. It's a nice change to have a companion who disagrees with you and isn't afraid to show it. The way he goes on with his jealous and sarcastic prattle is very fitting for a younger brother. There's a lot of tension brewing what with being born into a family of apostates, not being "special", and etc as stated in his codex entry.

Carver was very grating, yes, but he's one of the more realistic characters in the game. He wins in that regard.

I agree, looking at Carver I can believe 100% he's Hawke's brother.

Yeah, I didn't like Carver.

Didn't like Merrill, Anders, or Isabella either. Not as characters, they're fine characters, but they're all selfish or too stupid for everyone's well-being.

I like how the companions were more human this time around. They were flawed, had their own agendas, and actually betrayed you. But it's a double-edged sword. I like that about them but because of that I don't like them as people.

I'd like to stress that they're really well done characters though.

Carver was a big ass, and i always go for bethany....

But biggest ass of DA2? i think that title goes to Meredith and a few other ****s in the game.

Carver might be a dick, but he'll still stick up for hawke when push comes to shove. So on the list of characters i'd murder knife... carver isn't one of them :)

See, I wouldn't have minded Carver if he was a funny a-hole, but he's just an annoying one.  He wasn't a love to hate character for me, he was just a tool that i hated.  And don't even get me started on the eye roll worthy moment of realization at the end of the game if he becomes a grey warden.

Overall I liked Bethany better, but both are the bottom of the barrel when it comes to companions.

In the final stages, Circle Bethany was kicking some serious ass with all the points she had available. I didn't need Merrill, Anders, or any other mage. It was like I didn't even need the others really. I could have told Aveline, Varris, Sebastian, Merrill, and even guest appearance Zev to step aside to let the Hawke siblings show their stuff along with Onslaught (name of the dog). Beth had to do many heals on Aveline and Varris and still rained down destruction. Too bad we can't customize dialog (that would be the mother of features if a game allowed total control dialog but the devs probably would be ready to revolt if asked to do that). My Hawke would have said to Bethany after the fight with a proud older sibling smile, "And *I* was protecting you, sis? Way to kick that ass!"

Hawke - Hey Carver! I haven't seen you in three years! So much have happened, mother's dead and I'm rich as...

Carver - STFU I DON'T WANNA BE IN YOUR SHADOW *storms off*

He was nice in the end though.

I have to say I sort of like Carver in the way he'll be a complete and total ass, then yell "sister!" in an almost sweet tone of voice.
Though that's more props to the VA than anything, but it still showed a character who was constantly upset over being in Hawke's shadow but loved her nonetheless.

Carver is a huge ******, very annoying, extremely infantile at times and also one of the best characters I've ever experienced in a video game.

He is really really well written and voiced, I was genuinely frustrated with him, but at the same time some of his lines really pulled at my heartstrings.

He's a freaking jerk, but also a fantastic character.

Hey folks, that's my baby brother you are picking on! He may be a pain in the tushy, but he's blood, doggone it. If anyone's going to pick on my baby brother, it will be me! As an eldest child with a younger sibling, I have a great deal of affection for Carver. We may fight like cats and dogs, but in the end, no one knows me better...and no one has my back in quite the same way. Gotta love him, even when I want to take his head off.

Carver worked really well in my game. He was a bit of an ass to Hawke and Hawke often found herself being an ass back, but they loved each other.

Since in the end it was Carver who said "no, I'm not killing my sister" and stepped in front of the crazy woman with the scary sword to protect her, I guess Hawke was the bigger ass really.

I think part of the problem people have with with Carver is he doesn't stand around kissing up to you. I liked that he kind had that adversarial relationship with you. I thought it was handled very well and he felt real. You can tell Carver feels like a supporting character in somebody else's story, towards the end depending on what you do he comes into his own and makes peace with himself. One of my favorite Bioware characters.

Honestly it's hard for me to play with Bethany now I don't dislike her but she doesn't have as much of a story to her in my opinion.

Nope the biggest ass is Isabella, I wouldn't mind raiding that pirate booty.

I don't know that is not the feeling I got when he joined the templars.  It really looked like that was the only way he could stick it to his older brother/sister.  He did it out of spite but then again I wasn't making any kind of effort to make him a friend.

Agreed. When I first played the demo I thought carver was a ****** and was glad he died. But On my second playthrough I was a mage and really started to like his character, and his rivalry with hawke. Some great tension.

That's why I don't really like Bethany. She adds no real tension to the story.

Carver isn't an ass, just a whiny little ****. Who cries about how he's not loved.

Yet I'm making the ****ing decisions around here to save his ass. No appreciation. GTFO Carver.

I love Carver. I wish there was more of him in the game.

He might gripe about you running around being magey, but the very next minute he's standing up for you against Fenris: "If you have a problem with my sister, you have a problem with me."

I feel the same.  He's also constantly kicking your leg under the table when you start mouthing off about magic in public as well.

I don't know about you, but I found the Carver/Hawke interaction pretty jarring, considering that I have a younger brother and we had never fought with each other ever. If this is a show of how siblings interact with each other outside my family then I feel truly sorry for you guys.

I didn't say that, personally I preferred the interaction with Bethany. I just didn't like that I was forced to play a non-mage character in order to get her.
