Mass Effect: two DLC pieces
Mass Effect 2: fourteen DLC pieces, 5 of them story based, 2 of these bridging content
I like where this pattern is going personally.

Truth be told, Bioware keeps wanting to innovate itself which in turn cuts out what they had planned in the past because they only have so many resources.
Besides...
We're getting another Mass Effect Comic later this year before ME3 hits! There's your bridgeing DLC there!

My idea is that BioWare could have treated the DLC like a cliff hanger serial of the 1940's with each cliff hanger being resolved and a new one being presented all leading up to the introduction of the Reaper invasion fleet.
We would have been happy, BioWare would have made money, and I suspect that there would have been a great deal of interest in the media for such an approach. Unfortunately, it didn't happen.
Somebody will do this one day and the results are going to be impressive if it is done well.

To be honest, I'm disappointed with the DLC as well. They could have created modules that continued the storyline and led you right into ME3 with slowly building tension. If they had released DLC every three months or so they would have had an avalanche of interest in ME3.

I was expecting more or less this, even for the ME1 DLC. I am definitely blaming it on BioWare's decision to focus on the novels, The Priiiiiize's Ipod game that no one wants to buy or play, and the comic books.

That sounds great, unfortunately the economics of this game may have precluded this. You are talking about professional Voice Actors staying on retainer all year on top of everything else that goes into this game.
Modules or episodic addons might work with something like NWN which was specifically designed for module building but ME2 is far more complex.
YS is very busy every year, TH has several roles and is a frequent guest star on various TV series, MS highly sought after... etc.

Frankly, I wish there were more bridging DLCs but hey we got more DLC then most games do.
Not really because most developers do not promise DLC and the ones that do, typically get more than what ME1 and ME2 had.
Because of the status of ME, I put it in the category of Halo, COD, GTA, RDR, and Fallout. All of those games had significantly better DLC support than ME and ME2.
I mean look at GTA's Ballad of Gay Tony/Lost and Damned. Those are like 2 mini games themselves. Same with RDR's Undead Nightmare and Fallout 3's list of large DLCs. Then compare that to what ME2 recieved in terms of story related content.
Again, Bioware makes GREAT single player story games but when it comes to DLC support, Bioware continues to be in the "learning how to use" stage while other developers have moved onto "already know how to use but trying to make better: stage if that makes any sense.
In other words....Bioware as a AAA developer is behind the curve when it comes to DLC.
You cannot seriously put COD and Halo in the same category as R* games. CoD gets 2 maps packs per game and thats it. Same with Halo. We have MUCH better DLC in ME than either of those games... Rockstar is in a class of its own so its not even a fair comparison...

Zaeed: around 30min-1hour long mission + party member
Kasumi: over 1hour mission + party member
Overlord: 2-4hour mission
Firewalker 1-2hours of gameplay (okay, I personally didnt like firewalker but its extra content anyways)
Shadow Broker: 2-4hour mission + there is usefull stuff in the lair including if you like reading there is text for 1-2hours in there
and ofc the upcoming Arrival DLC with is propably 2-4hour mission aswell and who knows what kind of extra stuff we might get from it,
so thats totally roughly 8 - 12hours of extra content in total
