Many of us bought or pre-ordered DA2 out of faith and trust after how much we enjoyed DA:O.
I can't speak for anyone else, but I won't be pre-ordering DA3, I'll be waiting for user reviews.
Same here. I PO'd it way back in December, partially due to the freebies and partially due to the success of Origins and what bits we knew about the game.
As for DA3, it's really too early to tell if I'll be pre-ordering it. As of right now I probably won't, but that could change.

Im with both of you. I went and bought DA2 because of DA:O, I wish I waited a few weeks, then I would of waited till DA2 was cheap to buy it.
Not going to do that again. for ME3 (and if there is a DA3) I will wait till its released, view glamplay vids, read reviews and check the forums before I plunk another $60 down.

Yeah, Bioware probably lost a few oldskool Origins fans. They may have attracted enough of a new crowd to make up for that. Hardcore dollars aren't worth more than casual dollars, for the record. Just because you got in on the ground floor doesn't mean your opinion matters more than a recent convert's.
But that switch didnt seem to increase the sales by a wide margin? What was the point of the changes then?
They made the game in less than half the time.. Paying employees for 18 months of work vs 4 years of work saves a lot of money... A lot of the 4 years or the original being putting the engine and tools together... Which were already done. Even if they sell the exact same number of DA2 as they did DAO, with no increase, they will probably more than double their profits.
A point nobody seems to have mentioned so far whenever I have read about development times, is that although DA:O did take longer, a lot of that time was devoted to engine building and universe-building. DA2 had the advantage of simply modifying DA:O's engine and having a universe which was largely already written. A lot of codex entries were copied over and a lot of the backstory (pre-DA:O lore) was already conceived.
Despite that, DA:O may still have had more time than DA2 for development, but just don't forget that it isn't as simple as 4-5 years vs. 2.
A problem with the sales figures that some may be glossing over is that DA:O, though having shipped many copies on PC, was said to have only been completed by a fraction of the buyers. I remember a dev video stating that a large portion of players who bought DA:O never played it again after a few hours, which was one big motivator for their change in DA2's direction. Assuming this is true, it isn't a stretch to imagine that many of those players who bought DA:O and never finished it for whatever reason (likely because they did not enjoy DA:O) would not be buying DA2 and hence account for the lower sales. This isn't a defence, but it's a point which must be considered if you're going to be comparing sales.

I question the wisdom of eroding ones foundations while reaching for the heavens. (sounds more poetic)

It's not bad sales, but probably not what they were aiming for. Also, it would appear that the original Dragon Age sold well over time by word of mouth. I doubt we'll be seeing something similar this time.

Like the game - not bad, not great, but sure to invite wild opinions.
So mediocre sales for a mediocre game?
I'd expect a sequel to do most of its best sales in its first week, since most people will be buying it based on the performance of the original. Looking at the Metacritic score (and all the bad press about Bio/EA inflating it), I imagine that'd hurt the word-of-mouth that helped DAO become a success.
I mean, let's be honest, it's not like there was much competition released at this time. The only game of note released anywhere near DA2 was Shogun 2, and that's a PC exclusive game.

Haha but guess what? I who played through Dragon Age: Origins not once but 3 times could not bring myself to complete Dragon Age 2 after 17 hours of gameplay. So I guess the joke's on you Bioware!

Numbers look good, especially when you realize DA:O origins launched during the holiday season so it got lots of holiday sales and DA2 launched in March.
But DA2 had a ton of pre-orders, and as far as I'm aware those numbers include the pre-orders which VGChartz had at around 300k I think?
I think the pre orders was 400k, but I'm not sure. And many of those regret it today, I'm one of those. Bu that's life.
I will never pre order a game again, that's for sure..

And with DA:O they had to make the world, the lore and everything else. DA2 got this for free. So you can't really blame the development time. And even if they could, no one forced them to release a game this early..

Whats going on with Japan?!
I mean, i dont like the game either, but no sales? Is that a mistake?
EDIT: NVM, i forgot they had an Earthquake/Floods. And DAO had none either, so they just hate WRPG's, a shame.

DA had very good word of mouth, about 100 people told me about it ( I already had it) DA2 is not going to get that, if anything it's going to get the opposite of that.
The Japanese would likely laugh at DA2, it's a bad game by our standards it's horrific by theirs. Most JRPGs are still turn based. DA2 will not appeal. They get stuff like Last Story , they don't miss DA2

You have obviously never seen Last Story.

The profit for Bioware / EA is actually HIGHER despite the similar numbers. While it sells less than Dragon Age: Origins, Dragon Age: Rise to Power also had way lower development cost.

That will only work in the short term. Unless EA is setting Bioware up as the next Westwood, the simularities are worrying.

Wow, even if its small numbers as you say, I think its shocking to see older games like Football Manager 2011 being more popular.
Where I live it has the same problem. Older games are still more popular than DA2.

I would have to disagree. I've been playing the Final Fantasy games since FF4 (FF2 on the SNES) back in 1991... and that series has evolved with each and every tittle. FFXII and FFXIII were not turned based, in fact FFXII started the whole gambit system from which Dragon Age's tactics slot thing draws roots from. And you think DA2 is bad for only being in Kirkwall? Well, FFXIII didn't even have 1 city! lol. (still enjoyed FFXIII thou!) =P

About half of those are down to DA's reputation (at least). For an AAA game that was so extensively advertised , it's not that good.

You're really going to sit there and say that JRPGs aren't just as derivative and iterative as anything else I could name? Say what you will about DAII, at least it changed things rather than just copy/pasting and expecting sales. The Japanese game market right now is becoming incredible stagnant (hence the exodus of several high profile developers), though I agree, they'd probably hate DA2 (after all, you can't romance your sister), but they probably would've hated DA: O as well.
