Why is being 'evil' so unrewarding?

My 2nd playthrough I accepted his offer to drive away the woman in exchange for one gold piece and discount and I just felt so morally dirty. but i needed the money like an addict needs a fix....after finding that money glitch I can finally be the paragon i've been wanting to be :P

Hmm.. actually on my (somewhat ruthless) Rogue playtrough I thought this was a case of "evil not being very rewarding". As helping the merchant locked me out of 2 small side-quests. After that neither the village elder nor the trap lady wanted to speak with me. Incidentally the rewards were 50 silver each...

I guess the best solution would be to stay far away from the merchant first, in order not to trigger the conversation, do these sidequests and then come back.. that could mean 2 gold profit :D

I'm playing the most evil character of all at the moment, running about the countryside and generally being nice to people so they love me, seducing Alistair so he'll love me, and eventually I'm sure I can be queen, the entire place will belong to me and nobody will be any the wiser. They won't even have the slightest clue they've been betrayed and used so I can be queen. :P

That's awesome :D

Must have been some other cause for their lack of conversation. I sided with the merchant and still got the trap and healing salve quests.

it's true in general that the writers considered more options for a classic hero path and the number of options is one of my gripes with the game because i do see a number of missed chances within the story, especially for 'darker' roles however one should also realize that there's a difference between acting evil and just being rude. politeness is in daily life regarded as a sign of respect ... or it is just a way to get what you want because you anticipate a appreciative reaction by acting polite.

if you just act like a jerk then you'll loose cooperation and even evil characters need that from time to time for their evil acts.

Hmm, maybe I was mistaken and it's due to thievery then.

Then stealing would have an impact on how NPCs treat you after all - it's not meaningless like it seemed.

Some Dalish elves didn't want to talk to my char also - including the merchant.

Though he seems to reset if you help the Elves.

It seems to me that there are plenty of quests which a "good" character would turn down such as assassinating targets and doing the quests from the tavern in Denerim.

Also, as an evil character you can often be quite obvious about you only doing it in order to get paid for your work.

I like the fact that evil don't give the best rewards... In most games where you can play either good or bad... The person playing as a bad guy/girl will have more money / loot / rewards and se more fun and random events while the nice person is stuck with "awww thanks <3"

I think the OP is trying to play chaotic evil (To use an old school dnd term) - Playing evil is actually very rewarding, however playing chaotic is not and has never been in any of these games.

If you want to play evil - take a lawful evil / neutral evil stance and the game is very rewarding if not more rewarding than playing good.

If you dont know the difference of the levels of evil I have mentioned here - whip out a dnd manual or google it for more information and you will see the difference.

I dunno, my second play through being evil seems oh so much more rewarding then playing as a goody 2 shoes. I extort money and best rewards possible from everyone, I pickpocket beggars ffs, I can do rogue and assassination missions that my good char could not, I smuggled lyrium for insane profit, (where my good character once again would do no such thing), I made deals with demons and blood mages for power more then once, bullied and intimidated payouts and free stuff from grieving mothers and orphans, slaughtered and entire community simply to get a better army.
Smart evil is hella rewarding.
"I am a mean, ******, idiot" kind of evil doesn't get you very far, why would it?

ENDGAME SPOILERS AHEAD:

Concerning the saving the world thing at the end, if you play your cards right it puts you in a very strong position of power to manipulate politics, alliances, create a new Warden order in Ferelden, continue research into the joining using blood magic, maybe track down that godchild and try to use him for your own ends. Allowing Ferelden to be wiped out would kind of make it a bummer for you as the Darkspawn don't care if you are good or bad, they would kill you just the same.
