Abigale Shepard.
It's close to my real name. People often call me Abigale because they forget what my first name is.

My Shepard that I always use is named Fatima, because I got sick of playing good-looking white guys for the purposes of saving the universe. I did the best I could to make her look Syrian. I use her as my 'canon' Shepard.
For a Paragon male Shepard, I used the default guy, because I didn't care much and was playing Engineer, a class I don't like much.
My Renegade female Shepard is named Signild. I made her as Nordic looking as possible, with the palest skin, bluest eyes, and blondest hair possible. Fits with my own personal experience of every blond I knew during my formative years being a royal ****.
Renegade male Shepard I tried to make look as Asian as possible (not hard with the CC tools), and named him Sogetsu, after a character I like in a different setting. He's an Infiltrator.

Sarah, because it just sounded right. Worked out since she's a spacer and her mother is Hannah, which I didn't know when I created her.

Jon Sheppard.....just due to my first name.
Although everytime I play now I always think of "John Sheppard," From Stargate Atlantis.

Here are all my shep's names:
John: Infiltraitor
Arai: Adept
James* : Engineer ( likely my canon )
Bethany* :Soldier
Amy* :Sentinel
Daniel* :Soldier
Alyssa : Vanguard
With the obvious exception of john, i just picked names i liked. As for the ones with the asterisks behind them, those i named after my siblings, just cause it seemed cool. I know, i'm weird.

Well my very first Shep was Praetor!
At the time all I could think of was Praetor Fenix from Starcraft as a name I could live with.![=]](https://lvlt.forum.bioware.com/public/style_emoticons/default/sideways.png)
So far my favorite run through both games has been Seleucus I after the founder of the Seleucid Empire. He commanded the "Shield-bearers" (Hypaspistai) under Alexander so he was elite, one of the first Shock Troopers.

Male:

ManSheps:
1. Dick, because he is one.
2. Phineas, because I thought it was appropriate for my little blond engineer.
3. Malcom, because it's badass.
4. Dorian, because it's also badass.
FemSheps:
1. Ellen, after Ellen Ripley.
2. Joanna, because that's what I was ALMOST named.
3. Rowena, because I'd just read Ivanhoe for my English class and felt like naming her after a Saxon noblewoman for gits and shiggles.
4. HotWings. I... well... it's a long story.

My one and only Shepard is Ripley Ellen - and I bet you all can smell an Alien reference here. I'm been this character's fan since, well, childhood. So seeing any references to Aliens in ME makes me squee, whether it's Rachni, Akuze, or Hackett's voice. Talitha and her Newt reference aren't in my playthrough, though; my Ripley is a spacer. I don't complain; I, in fact, find this pretty fitting as my Ripley is lacking the motherly side her namesake had.
Edit:

My canon's named John.
Why, you ask?
Well, I lack imagination for certain things.
May as well name him Lydian, Ionian, Locrian?
They sound pretty cool.

I have two named Morten Shepard (which is my own iRL first name), i have one called Bruce Shepard, one called Kalanor Shepard and one called Vhyros Shepard. Besides the ones using my own first name, what i do is that i just try different letters in different order after i have formed a concept of how my Shepard's name will sound like (nationality).
And i also prefer names out of the ordinary, mostly. I don't think i could ever call any of my Shepard's for John.
My characters names in different games is often influenced by Greek or Norse mythology, or names that sounds Arabic in origin. I love using h in my character names. And i guess, my fascination for elves in different settings also influence my character name choices.

My canon maleShep: Eric, same as mine, because I play him according to my own morality choices.
My other 2 are femSheps: Lorna (Sole Survivor, Earthborn) and Mira (Colonist, Ruthless), no particular reason beyond my liking of their names.

I always use the default names. It just feels cheesy and unimaginative (yeah I am aware of the inherent contradiction there) to give them any other name. This is mostly because I am a canon zombie.

Right now, FemShep (as she's my 'canon') is named Delia.
It's a bit complicated why, but bear with me. Usually my characters are named Harpalyce, Harpa, or Harper, since it's the name I use everywhere. (It references a character who gets a three-line cameo in the Aeneid, one of Camilla's warriors who can run so fast she doesn't even touch the tops of the grass.) But I'm also a biologist. If you look up the scientific name 'delias harpalyce', you'll find it belongs to a very pretty butterfly called the Imperial White. 'Harper' didn't seem to quite fit Shepard. So, I went to Delias, and then that became Delia. I think it suits!
