They went about this all wrong. Instead of taking away armor for your companions (for simplicity, one would assume), they should have instead eliminated the whole idea of separate armor pieces (helms, gloves, boots, chestplate), which is just annoying. That would have been more effective for simplicity, AND allowed the player to customize their party members' appearance as per the classic Bioware games.

Come on Bioware, get with the program.

I don't Understand how a PArty leader can tell someone what to wear if someone told me to wear a dress leader or not i would be like Fu and leave

So if the two of us were stuck in a warzone with only one bulletproof vest between us, I can keep the vest because you don't like being ordered to wear something. Good to know :D

Being unable to change my companions' armor made all armor rather pointless to me, since I just went with the most powerful item set of each act and didn't bother with any other armor/accessories. I liked experimenting with different armors on my character and my companions in DAO, and I really hated this experiment in DA2.

I also really despised the "ring" "ornate ring" options. I preferred some idea of what I was looking at without having to mouse over each item, since a lot of the accessories showed ZERO stars, but were actually more useful than a three or four star item. WTF was that? Ring, belt, amulet over and over in my inventory was a time-waster and downright bland.

Customizing usually came down to making them look like every other NPC you kill in the game. Bioware wanted to avoid this.

Voila. Unique outfits for companions. It's to give them added flavor compared to past games. Do I agree with this? Somewhat. It could be changed so that you can find multiple outfits as a sub-section of the gift mechanic for every companion. That way, their look is never static unless you choose for it to be.

don't worry, you'll probably be able to change their armor later for 160 BioWare/MS points.

I actually doubt that a little. ME2 already had that feature built into the game while DA2 does not - it's an automatic change that stays for the rest of the game. Sure, they could probably add it, but I don't think they will.

I'm annoyed by Sebastian being the only one a bow is useful for unless you're a rogue who has archery... and even then, since you can't switch weapons easily, switching between your bow and daggers are such a pain! I have a ton of bows and I end up leaving half of them so I don't have to take up room with them.

Personally, my main issue in not being able to change my companion's clothes is I would have respected Isabella alot more if I could have put some pants on her! I don't mind iconic outfits, I just wish we could switch through a couple. Anders only goes all black after you complete his quest entirely (which.. is sorta lame. It's not even a "Love you" change like the others. You have to indulge in his dark side to get him to...wear dark clothing. Wallowing in rebel much?)

I think it'd be fun to at least have color variety with maybe a few modifications. Like an outfit of just adding tight black pants to Izzie, or maybe a looser elegant piece for Merril (Though her white looks lovely if she's romanced.) Fenris...I suppose they could at least give him a couple shades to choose from. And Varric would look good in dark blue too. Maybe even give Aveline a choice for off-duty armor when she's with you. Of course, I loved that the cut scenes at least removed my dumb hood but I wanted it gone all the time. That thing was hideous on mages, though sorta okay on rogues. STill would prefer non-visible.

Not sure what system you're playing on but I know on the PC you can make the hoods and helmets invisible everywhere except the inventory screen so Hawke always seems to be bare-headed evne if wearing some sort of headgear.   There's a tick box in the Options screen or something - not in the game right now so can't say exactly where but I  know I use this function so I don't have to stare at annoying headgear all the time.

Exactly the same on the PS3, as you say, in the options screen
