'Tis true. Here's the list of Bioware games with their metacritic score:

(I didn't include that Sonic DS game because it's a handheld nor Shattered Steel from 1996 as no reviews are available)

(multi-platform games were given their highest score)

Mass Effect 2 (2010) - 96
Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn (2000) - 95
Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic (2003) - 93
Baldur's Gate (1998) - 91
Neverwinter Nights (2002) - 91
Mass Effect (2007) - 91
Dragon Age: Origins (2009) - 91
Jade Empire (2005) - 89
MDK2 (2000) - 83
Dragon Age II (2011) - 82

Why fix what isn't broken, Bioware? :( :( :(

EDIT:

More up-to-date and in-depth scores here:

The scores are now as follows:

PC - Critic: 82 (34 critics); User: 4.3 (2109 users)
360 - Critic: 79 (63 critics); User: 4.4 (1387 users)
PS3 - Critic: 82 (46 critics); User: 3.8 (734 users)

While the user scores are arguably biased (despite the large numbers) because people are more likely to rate when they want to rant, the critic scores are particularly interesting. This is because the 360 has many more reviews than the other two consoles, yet has the lowest score. This is evidence to support that critics who get the game early feel compelled to give higher scores, but over time the score will drop as more critics contribute. I think it's likely that we'll see the PS3/PC versions drop to around the 80 mark.

Such a shame, if this had been a proper sequel to DAO it would have been in the 90s maybe even beaten its predecessors' score.

I played another good game that was panned by the critics, namely Alpha Protocol.

And after that, the sequel was cancelled. Lets hope they don't do the same with Dragon Age as I am looking forward to DA:3. Losing the franchise completely would be disastrous.

On the flip side, I enjoyed the game so these scores don't mean much to me at the moment

Seing Neverwinter Night with such a high score make me cry all over.
DA2 was disappointing and had lots of flaws, but it's still ten times better than the huge pile of crap that the official campaign of NWN was.

Sonic Chronicles has a 74 on metacritic, technically that's their lowest rated game ever

Dragon Age 2 is just the second lowest rated

i think that's a fair statement

i think most people here who are criticizing Bioware or Dragon Age 2 are doing it out of a love of Bioware's other games, and not because they hope the series fails or Bioware goes under

I did say that I wasn't including the Sonic game as it's obviously not a typical Bioware game and it's a handheld... If it really helps any DA2 fans, you can say it's the 2nd lowest score but considering only the serious games, Dragon Age II is lowest.

didn't catch that

i guess you could say that of the types of games that Bioware is good at making, Dragon Age 2 is worst rated ever

Indeed. I can appreciate that some people did not like the sequel as much as they did Origins. Different people, Different tastes.

I understand their views and frustrations come from the fact they love Biowaire's other titles. But some of the criticism has gone a bit over the top at times. And as with Alpha Protocol, there comes a point where a publisher/developer could just decide to cut their losses.

And that would be a shame for everyone.

I agree obviously. The point of the thread was to make a tiny contribution in favour of DAO-style over DAII-style by actually presenting facts rather than just stating it, in marginal hope that Bioware take notice for a future sequel :P

Dragon Age is a cash cow and will be milked until the udders are dry, cracked and bleeding. Have no fear regarding a sequel. I just fear that Bioware doesn't care about quality -at all- anymore and is just going to continue plopping out bad games until they stop selling.

where is KOTOR 2 on that list?  ((85 for the record)) which is only 3 points ahead of DA2.

But out of 100 82 isn't bad.

1 out of 100 would be terrible... 50 would be average 100 would be best game ever.

Why do people look at 8 out of 10 ((rounding up)) as bad. Are any of you seriously saying if you had the chance to bed an 8 you wouldn't?

They just need to take more time in production. At minimum release schedule should be 2 years, no more 18 month 'squeeze em outs'.

Was made by Obsidion.

They make Bioware sequels better than Bioware does.

yeah people can get very defensive/aggressive and dramatic when it comes to franchises they enjoy from developers they love

crysis 2 experienced something similar with the MP demo which came late to PC & PS3 and didn't work very well, not to mention the game came off like a straight port of the 360 version to PC given its lack of directx11 and customizable graphics options as well as aim assist and controls geared more towards a controller... so people were pissed, they had supported Crytek with millions of sales of Crysis 1 and Warhead and Crytek was one of the few prominent developers really pushing PC graphics to the limit, cancelled pre-orders galore

once the EA multiplayer marketing angle stopped and they started showing off the better-looking single player i think people felt ok about the game again, the single player is what sold Crysis 1 afterall, but the reality is in this modern age where everybody is more connected - gamers feel more connected to developers they support with their money, i think the days of a big faceless publisher only appealing to the lowest common denominator needs to end and realize there's a good groundswell of gamers they can tap into who will market your game for you if you're 1-on-1 and honest with them

yeah, Alpha Protocol is most underrated game in 2010. to me, it shares the same flaws with Dragon age 2, but they are both great games

Bioware didn't develop KOTOR2, or it wouldn't have gotten 85. In an industry where it's only worth buying the best, 50 is far from average. There are enough games in the 85+ bracket to keep most people occupied between releases. Also, an 82 would be good to many games companies, but for Bioware I've just shown that it's the lowest they've ever made. Therefore in comparison to their other games, it's a disappointment. Fans expected the quality of Origins and those expectations weren't met.

Indeed, both great games that with a little polish and a bit more time, would be even better.

I like DA2 and all for what it is, but I hope Bioware doesn't bother with DLC and just starts working on DA3.

We can hope but Bioware loves DLC :(

No doubt they'll throw all the interesting storylines like Morrigan etc into a tiny Kirkwall DLC with changed voice actors, appearances, false choice illusions and reused assets, but we shall see...

RPG wise, yes, DA2 is clearly the worst reviewed game in the last 12 years by Bioware. The SP campaign is superior than NWN, yes, but it doesn't come with a toolset or multiplayer play, which were the main focus of the title to start with.

It doesn't take a rocket scientist to see that the user reviews line up with the critic reviews.
