The title really says it all. Its time for my third playthrough and this time I have the lucky opportunity of playing the rogue. I am seeking one of those infamous 'high crit' builds that I have heard so much about. Assassinate and what not. The trouble is, I am not quite sure how to accomplish such a build, and would preffer not waiting until level 20 to find out. Any suggestions out there? I hear that attribute assaignment is key, using high cunning. Any estimate on how high to go with Dexterity and Cunning? Point placement for talents as well? Any and all suggestions are well appriciated

It takes a high dex build (as in only enough cunning to wear best gear) with duelist spec and unforgiving chain. Get upgraded heroic aura buff from Anders. Wear champions armor or other +% crit gear, and daggers with +% crit.
My DW rogue had 117% chance to crit with unforgiving chain going and all buffs.

I assume you are talking about the insanely high Assassinate crits on high health bosses, right?
it certainly helps to have 2 mages in your party able to cast BRITTLE spells and at least one of them able to cast debuffs like Hex of Torment.
Also, your rogue needs the upgraded version of Mark of Death.
For inflicting incredibly high crits on a dragon or similar boss, you need to keep casting upgraded Petrify or upgraded Winter's Grasp a couple times before they become BRITTLE. Then your mages needs to cast hex of torment and your rogue must use Mark of Death
additional debuffs will help.

Yes, Valiant Aura and gears help a lot. Devious Harm should be a top priority talent. Cunning should not be placed above Dexterity until you have near 100% critical chance.
Duelist is not a necessity. Shadow is often better if you know how to use it. Needless to say Assassin should be your first spec, and Mark of Death further improves your insane damage spikes.
Mages also help to boost your damage spikes further with Dessicate => Assassinate and Hex of Torment + Mark of Death. You should be able to one-shot Dessicated golems with Assassinate. It's quite satisfying.

Twin Fangs is also a great talent. It does the same damage as Vendetta, always crits, has a short cooldown (20 sec vs. 30 sec for Assassinate/Vendetta), throws enemies back, has a fast animation, and is DESIGNED to kill other Assassins who has just backstabbed you - it's the most satisfying thing ever to Twin Fangs the douche who just materialized behind you.

Yeah, coming from a mage that constantly sits at 300 damage, I am ready for some large numbers in the game. My plan was basically shove points in Assassin, Shadow, duelwield and a few here and there. I am just not sure the basic layout. I also plan on having Merril and Anders in my party for the brittle and extra debuffs. My concern is exactly where to place my talents and attribute points. I hear that for really high crits, its best to get dexterity to 42ish so you can use all of the armor and weapons and have the rest in cunning, but I have also heard otherwise.

That's not necessarily true. Assassinate itself requires a lot of points put into the tree before you can get it and the upgrade requires level 14. The other skills are only marginally useful without Assassinate. Mark of Death really is only worth using before Assassinate (Twin Fangs doesn't do enough damage to warrant use of such a high-cost, high-cooldown talent right before it and using Mark of Death breaks the combo chain for explosive strike). Pinpoint Strikes isn't that useful since most DW abilities auto-crit and using it for autoattacks won't up your DPS by much (I've tried using it and I can't even tell when the effect expires without looking at the status display).
I'd go either Duelist or Shadow for first spec at level 7 (Shadow gets you a little extra damage on crits and some more threat management/panic-button talents while Duelist gives you some huge passive bonuses to Defense and Attack, the main advantage being that it maxes your attack % with fewer points in Dex freeing up more points in Cun for crit damage), then at 14 get Assassin and either respec to immediately get upgraded Assassinate + Mark of Death or start saving talent points at around level 9-10 (I find saving talent points not that big a sacrifice since around then is when I start running out of really useful talents to get elsewhere).

If you get Assassinate earlier it really helps to one-shot lieutenants even if it is not the upgraded CCC version.
If you have a tome or save a talent point when you get to level 10 you can instantly add Assassinate + Anihilate and get started with massively high crits on BRITTLE enemies as early as level 10.
To get the Overkill upgrade you have to wait until level 16.

You have party members besides yourself, and Mark of Death can help boost their spike damage (especially combined with Varric's Rhyming Triplet and a Mage's Death Hex/Crushing Prison). This helps a lot against tough enemies in the Deep Roads. Devious Harm (level 12) should also be obtained as early as possible.
If you don't mind respecing, perhaps it's a good idea to get Shadow first to improve survivability, but before the Deep Roads, respec to Assassin.

My other party members were all basically specced for support, so I didn't have much use for Mark of Death before Assassinate. Also I mainly used backstab + twin fangs in succession to spike down lieutenants really fast. Against bosses explosive strike got the job done pretty well. It takes a little longer to set up but it does more damage than Assassinate if you don't have the upgrade to exploit Brittle.
I didn't find the Deep Roads very difficult (and yes I did it on Nightmare). The only part that gave me any trouble was the end boss, but even then it wasn't as much difficult as it was just annoyingly long. I guess Assassinate + Mark of Death will shorten the fight a little but considering how much health that thing has I don't think it makes that much difference.

Yeah I don't find assassin much of use at 7 besides mark of death. I think i will go shadow and respect around 10 or just before the deep roads.
