I'm stuck at the Arishok duel and I'm wondering if I should have bought the Elixir of Technique before going to talk with the Qunari.

yes it is, you can also go there post-game

also here is a tip: you are able to summon dog (even though its supposed to be just you in the duel) to help fight the Arishok
