Everyone else was just flat.
Do you any of you guys agree? Besides Merrill and Varric, everyone else in your party felt so flat. Fenris was the stereotypical angsty JRPG character. Sebastian had his entire family murdered and sought refuge in religion. Anders was the rebel. Aveline was a "law and order" sort of person. Perhaps their personalities didn't mesh well with me, or perhaps a lot of the companions in DA2 were lacking that special "quirk" that made them lovable and admired. Or perhaps it wasn't presented very well.
In Mass Effect 2, I loved all the squadmates. Everyone had a quirk that had some appeal. Mordin could sing Gilbert and Sullivan. Thane was facing imminent death. Miranda lacked confidence despite her cool and confident exterior. Grunt was an artifical krogan. Jack had a very difficult childhood.
Yet, it wasn't the quirks by themselves that make characters appreciable - it is the presentation of such quirks that give the quirks themselves their appeal.
Aveline redeemed herself in my eyes when I did her quest with Donnic - because it gave her a situation in which she was able to exhibit her quirk (insecurity around men) in such a forceful and dynamic way.
My incoherency is beginning to crop up again, but do any of you agree? Perhaps it's because these characters spoke so little that they were allowed enough opportunities to show off their true colors?
