it says they were defetaed at the end of the exalted marches mostly because they could not keep up with chantry magic. what about Saarebas? these guys are stronger than most mages,
how is qunari bad with magic?

Story doesn't necessarily line up with gameplay. Perhaps as far as the story is concerned the Saarebas are inferior mages but it would be really boring to fight them that way so they're made stronger.

I thought the same thing when fighting them. You actually have to target them first, unlike normal mages which are no big deal.

They lose in versatility (I'm guessing) - I've only seen Saarebas do three spells. "Teleport" (which evidently can't be done with magic... but whatever. "Electric Force Field" and "Electric Burst" (not official names of course)
Interesting that they concentrate on the element they're immune to in the game.

I imagine there's a lot MORE human/elven mages than there are Qunari mages. Not only that, but I think that Circle mages are better educated and thus more versatile in their use of magic than the Qunari mages are. Circle mages can learn from each other, while the Saarebas seem pretty... limited when it comes to communicating with their kin. As in, they get killed when they do, as do those that they spoke to.

@The Lesser Evil = Actually, they're allowed to speak. The Saarebas "Ketojen" actually tells the Qunari with the control rod that he wishes to speak. The Qunari says: "Are you sure?" to which Ketojen nods. Then the Qunari allows him to speak.
They do get angry if Hawke tells them he's a mage - I suspect that is because they were deceived prior to encountering him and now they are not sure if Hawke has already corrupted them.

Ketojen speaking appears to be in conflict with what Sten says in the Circle Tower in DA:O. Sten makes an offhand remark to Gregoir that they should just cut out the tongues of the mages like the Qunari do.
Odds are the Saarebas are not permitted to train, so their magical abilities are natural and instinctive. They're likely limited in the range of spells at their disposal and as a result would be at a disadvantage against Tevinter or Circle mages. As an army, however, the Qunari appear to be far superior to anything we've seen so far. They are a physically stronger race, united by a powerful faith with very little infighting.

I think they (Bioware) decided to change up the Saarebas slightly - there would be no need to sew their mouth's shut if they had their tongues cut out.
Maybe only "apostate" Saarebas get their tongues cut out?

I think they probably changed it because it allowed them to show that even the Saarebas accept their role in the Qun.
The treatment of mages by the Chantry and Qunari have very interesting contrasts. Saarebas may be bound and subjugated under the Qun, but only to the extent the Qun dictates. I imagine that in many ways, the treatment of mages under the Chantry is more barbaric than under the Qun.

I believe cutting out a Saarebas's tongue is something the Qunari only do to those they suspect of having had dealings with demons, so they cannot corrupt others.

Cutting out Saarebas tognue is done to apostate Saarebas.
