Do you have to take Wynne if you are not a healer mage?

Well, after watching some of the battles in the Warden's Quest event, it seems that in order to even survive, your party has to have a dedicated healer mage (like wynne or strictly healing specialist player mage) to survive..

Is that true? Because I had planned to take my own mage as a damage dealer and 2 meelees and 1 rogue for the party - I don't want to spend all my time spamming healing spells just to keep the meaties alive. Seems like I am forced to give up 1 meelee char, or the rogue, to take place for Wynne, which, as a character, appeals to me the least.

So, I'd like to know, is a specialized healer mandatory if you hope to kill the bosses/finish the game on normal difficulty? Or can you get by with some health potions and basic Heal on occasion?

The devs say no, but till more people get to play through no one will really know. My guess would be a party mage would probably be required to have a few healing spells as a precaution, Given the number of spells available I don't think it would be a terrible sacrifice to take heal and cure.

I would say you would then atleast need to take the first level heal spell yourself. The French Wardens Quest didn't take Wynne (wont say why incase you don't want spoilers) and they had a VERY hard time with some boss type fights in the short term. Long run the dev said you could over come that but I really think it would mean taking the heal spell yourself and loading up on pots.

Healing as in instant heal is only one spell and you'll want that.

I'm hoping that Morrigan will be able to do enough healing to suffice while still having time for some Shapeshifting fun.

I haven't read much about the available spells and abilities, but, from my experience, playing a group-based RPG without someone mildly proficient in healing can be trouble. It might be fine on the lower difficulty settings or against normal "trash" enemies, but my guess is that serious battles will require serious healing.

I have plans to include Wynne in my first party, just in case. She looks kind of bland though, which might be a cue that Bio felt she should fit in any party.

I don't see why that wouldn't be the case.

You don't need a specialized Spirit Healer to be able to do the basic healing abilities.

I watched the warden's quest contest - and one thing I was amazed by was how many characters died, constantly.

I mean - all the time, characters were dying, and not being revived until all the enemy were dead. That left the whole party at a disadvantage for long stretches, over and over for each team.

What struck me was how unnecessary this was. Each player had Wynne, so they could have purchased the resurrection spell - which is just the second spell in the spirit healer tier, I believe. Then, with just a little mana, they could have each reconstituted their party over and over... all of the fights would have been much better with that one spell.

Now, granted, each party there was intentionally underleveled, speedrunning through battles, but I'd say that a spirit mage is critical to the harder difficulties, to avoid having to constantly load the game each time you see a skull icon showing up in a tough battle.

I just don't see how you could fight, for instance, the stronger dragon, without some characters falling on occasion - with everyone burning, at doing time-consuming battle moves, then being stunned by long attack animations, you can't always be healing everyone, or drinking potions enough to keep everyone alive, and losing any single party member for the whole fight just accellerates your downfall, with all that damage now going to fewer PCs.

Resurrection is a key skill, meaning that at least one spirit healer just seems common sense. I'll be taking two in my first playthrough, along with a rogue who can sneak away in hopeless battles, if that ends up being a viable strategy.
