1. Claiming that the story is awful.
I loved the stories in both Dragon Age Origins and Dragon Age 2. But, I do think Dragon Age 2 had a better story. Act 1 was a little weak, but I thought Acts 2 and 3 were fantastic. The Arishok was a believeable "villian" whose motivations you could understand, and the mage/templar conflict was so fantastic because of how it is not black and white. Plus, the way the companions influenced the story was fantastic: they had their own agenda.
Spoilers:
When Anders blew up the chantry, I had a heart attack and I was shocked for like 30 minutes. He was my pal and I did not want to kill him. Honestly, I didn't know how to handle the situation. And having Sebastian yelling for his death made it even more difficult.
In Dragon Age Origins, there was a clear evil enemy. Which is fine, but generic. In Dragon Age 2, the main factions are not truly evil.
Now, I agree that fighting Orsino when siding with the mages was foolish. It seemed like a cheap trick to get in an extra boss fight. The fact that it seemed like all of the mages ended up being evil was annoying. If Bioware meant for them to be evil, then fine. But I don't think they wanted that. Maybe if they had some normal, non-blood mages fighting the templars at the end with you, I would have been happier.
What really needed improvement in the story was the choices I could, or in this case couldn't, make. I am okay with having mama Hawke die. It was incredibly sad and touching. But, not having choices that are meaningful in other regards was saddening.I just felt like the game was too linear. I would have liked choices that actually changed the city. No matter what I did, things would always end up the same. In some cases, like with Mama Hawke, that is fine. Death happens. But in others, like in Orsinos quest, I felt cheated. What if my mage wanted to join those rebels? Really, I can't because they will just attack me on sight? It seems like a cop out.
2. The characters were not as good
This is all about opinion, but I loved the characters. I see that many people are obssessed with romances and since all of the characters are somewhat flawed, people are angry. Frankly, I couldn't care less about romances. Sure, I will romance a character if it fits my Hawke, but romances are not what make and break characters. I thought each character was incredibly entertaining and Varric was the greatest bro character ever created. Bromance
The problem with the characters was not the characters themselves, but the way you interacted with them. In Origins, you could talk to them in camp whenever you wanted and really discuss stuff with them. In Dragon Age 2, you can't do that. I am ok with not talking to them on the road, but I don't like how I am forced to discuss certain things with them when I do talk to them. Having multiple dialouge choices and really getting to know the characters was amazing. I don't know how else I can describe why I liked Origins companion system better. To summarize, the characters themselves are fantastic and interesting, but the interface is not as good as Origins and I don't feel like I know them as well.
Overall, the game is still fantastic, but i do hope they consider feedback like this for the next game.
