This is right at the end of the game, so don't read if you don't like spoilers.
I'm trying to get to the gallows. I've fought through lowtown and I'm now at the docks. I'm a mage, with Anders, Varric, and Aveline. I'm fighting for the mages. Once I hit the dock, about a zillion fades come at me along with a pride demon, and I'm getting massacred every time. HELP! Do I need to be focusing on the blood mages? What?

On my first playthrough I actually found it easier not to go for the mage first (just casting dispel whenever she would attempt anything) and fight the shades on a single front, instead of rushing in the middle of the shades, exposing my weaker party members and getting in the way of the pride demon...
Second time I pretty much just nuked everything carelessly... but that was still in hard mode.

Blood Mages and Arcane Horrors are severe pains, almost, at times, worse then Hunter/Assassins I think due to Hemorrhage spell getting overlooked in the graphics and AIs being too dumb to move out of AoE DoT fields.

Your party lacks someone who can dispose a dangerous guy quickly...
Try this, it is a relatively safe tactic that may take a while.
Position your party in the dock master's office to the right of the entrance and hold position. Have Aveline go and pull everyone to the chock point and let loose on the damage. If you are on PC, you can have Varric help Aveline pull threat with his Goad and Armistice...Since the abilities are bugged on the consoles...then it is going to require more micro-manage. Maybe have Varric focus on the blood mages.
