Having a sister as a companion was a bad design choice IMO. It just really struck home how you didn't feel one with Hawke at all. With the Warden, all of the characters you met were new (other than the Origin stories) and so your relationships with them were real. With Bethany, you're not reacting as you naturally would - would you really bring your sister with you into the brothel? I fail to see why Bethany couldn't be a friend who escapes with you from Lothering. That way she could be a LI, etc, etc...

I agree. You don't really feel apart of the family in anyway. I remember Bethany telling me what Carver was like. But if he's my brother, wouldn't I already know what type of person he is? It was just stuff like that. But I suspect it's difficult to create a family bond in a game. You just don't have that history with those characters. You're also just getting to know them.

They could of fixed this somewhat with an Origin to Hawke, growing up in Lothering. Then the player might give a damn when the ogre bashes either Carver or Bethany into the mud. It only got an eyebrow raise out of me as it was. A thirty minute short story of your PC with his/her siblings might help this somewhat, even more if it was an hour long Origin with time jumps.

i really don't think morrigan went through as much as bethany did. bethany and her family were constantly on the run from templars.

Morrigan learned from a very powerful mage/abomination who dealt with every templar intruding on their territory.

I suppose the thing with busty Bethany Hawke is she seemed the most stable of all the characters.  If she wasn't the sister, she probably would be the most romanced female in the game.

The thing is though, I think Tali in ME1 played the role of sister better than Bethany did in DA2.  There wasn't enough family involvement to really create that sister bond between her and your Hawke.  If they do a DLC or expansion, heres hoping there is a greater bridge for the family connection to create that bond before the mods start....

when you finish lothering and hear Leandra and Carver/Bethany talk and sob about the other dead sibling, and when you try to get to know each sibling through different playthroughs, you start getting attached to the dead character and that particular scene will have more weighted impact on you.

Someone still upset about the sister thing? Posted Image *joking*

Seriously though, the family members might as well have been friends for what little they added to the game beyond the 1st act. The "family themes" were almost nonexistant.

I think it was a good choice to have them as family, for me it made it all more personal. For example, I don't think I'd have cared about what happened to Carver if he had just been some random douche who'd followed me from Lothering.

Nobody likes to play a game where the prettiest woman (arguably, of course) is the protagonist's sister. Because it certainly makes the player wish they ditch the Hawke Doom Magnet in favor of somebody who isn't Bethany's "brother," and besides a reviewer named Angry Joe brought something to my attention. He said that the default male character model for Hawke looks like the Sheriff of Nottingham from Robin Hood: Men in Tights.

But the first time you see Bethany, and Carver, though is when they have an argument and shortly afterward one of them gets bashed into the ground! It wasn't like the Human Noble origin story in Dragon Age 1, where you (the player) get introduced to the family members in a more natural fashion and then tragedy strikes. But maybe the blame should be put on whoever decided it would be best to release Dragon Age 2 with just a little over a year and a half of development time put into the final product.

Didn't happen in my playthrough. Zevran was dead and lying in a ditch rotting like ol' bones.

This mod doesn't bother me too much because I know it's just a morph to make either Isabela or Merril look like Bethany. And you obviously can't hear Bethany's voice afterward because Rebekah Staton didn't do any incest voice overs, to my knowledge.

Duh! Of course its just a morph :P. Can't really do much in this case anyway, since you'll need voice overs , scripting etc.

It comes from this mod if someone is interested.

I did that when my Hawke romanced Isabella

I was like "DUDE. You just f***ed my girlfriend right in front of me"

Duh? What is this the ****ing 90's? Anyway I'm just saying that it doesn't really matter whether you created this character morph or not. Because in video games the look of a character is only half of it. The other half is the voice. So you're pretty much stuck listening to Victoria Kruger's inferior Isabela voice or Eve Myles's fake heavy Welsh accent. (P.S. I know Eve is actually Welsh but her accent isn't THAT thick, it's pretty mild.)

But Morrigan had a rather abusive childhood in the Wilds. Flemeth taught Morrigan to be exactly like her and when you consider the possibility that Morrigan might not be Flemeth's flesh and blood, but rather a helpless babe, who was stolen from nobility, well, that sort of makes her backstory even more tragic.

Until I get a sequel or an expansion pack where I can romance Bethany as a different playable character this doesn't really cut the mustard, but to each their own.

if you're a red neck...its okay to bang your sis...LOL
but in all seriousness, that was a good ploy to make the hottie your lil sis. Think about it..its a different kind of love, not the sexual one you freaks. Love for your lil sister where you'd do anything and everything to protect her. Just like a father will do for his daughter. That makes it more of a powerful connection IMHO.

Anything mofo that messes or hurts my daughter will get the crap kick out of them. I'm sure thats what the feeling is towards bethany on that level is more morally correct.

I will admit that it was an excuse for Bioware to showcase a sibling bond that almost felt like a "platonic" love story and they haven't really done one of those since KOTOR 1 and Jade Empire. But our disappointment stems from the fact that we don't like Merril and Isabela....And we'd much rather have ANYONE else besides those two. Even an adopted sister romance.
