Issue: DragonAge2 consistently crashed during loading screens, occassionaly dialogue. The crashing usually resulted in (a) BSOD (blue screen), (
When this first started happening, I was told "it's just poor coding, boo Bioware", however I wasn't satisfied with that answer and kept pushing. It didn't make sense to me that two people I know personally were able to play DA2 on lesser machines than mine with no problem. Bioware certainly didn't code two different versions just to give half of us frowny faces.

**If not comfortable changing your own settings, DON'T WING IT. I googled myself to death and asked a friend to help with touchy settings.**
Step one: ISOLATE THE PROBLEM(s)
- Updated ATI Graphics driver to recommended Catalyst Beta 11.4
- Rolled back to prior version, then installed just the driver without CCC ~ still crashed, went back to Beta Driver 11.4
- Fresh reinstall of game and set game to run as Admin
- Changed in-game setting from DirectX 11 to DirectX9 ~ still crashed, left it on 11
- Changed in-game Video settings until it ran smooth (as listed above) ~ no longer choppy
- Undid ALL overclocks
- Disabled Quad Core unlock ~ became more UNstable, so re-enabled Quad
- ANALYZED CRASH DUMPS using WinDbg, Debugging tool for Windows(64) ~ someone on the forum recommended this. I googled instructions, downloaded the tool, opened the crashdump and typed !analyze -v . This listed a nice slew of problems I didn't know about:
- Updated ALL other drivers, ie Sound, Ethernet, etc
- Updated mobo BIOS ~ no more BSODs from "Hyper Transport Sync Flood" errors, no longer have to change Core Affinities (huzzah!)
- Scanned for errors in Windows and fixed corrupted files
- Installed Windows updates
Step two: FIND OUT WHAT'S CAUSING THE ISOLATED PROBLEM
** Research the remaining error(s) and find out what the PROBABLE causes are, there's usually a "check list"
- Ran a Hardware monitor while playing in windowed mode so I could watch it (MSI Afterburner)
- GPU not overheating
- Power supply issues? questionable
- Noticed that GPU usage was dropping during loading screens, made me question the GPU **the GPU usage dropped from between 75-100 down to 25-30, then picked back up once loaded. Usually after several loadings, it would drop to 1-4, which caused a brief freeze then loaded. When it hit 0 it hung for about 15 seconds then crashed. Where as the numbers may be normal on usage, I had no idea and it made me think possible issue with PowerPlay? Found out that the voltage kept dropping to 140 during the loading, way below recommended so it kept killing the card, and crashing everything
**I ended up googling "'my card name' disabling Powerplay"
- editted Core Clock and Memory Clock settings within card Profiles to "trick" PowerPlay, this now prevents it from dropping below recommended settings during the loading screens (IDLE: GPU Clock 400MHz, Memory Clock 900MHz, w/ DA2 running its 920MHz / 1220MHz so when it does drop, it doesn't go below 400 now ) I don't recommend copying my numbers, go by your own specs
I spammed loading screen about 50 times, played for 6 hours straight (previously it lasted an hour at best), and tried again the day after... no more APPCRASH or BSODs. It may seem like overkill, but all the troubleshooting resulted in a more stable system that can finally run the game without making me want to kick a wall. Now all I have to worry about are the miscellaneous Quest Bugs.
Gorath Alpha has an excellent format topic that suggests starting your own thread with your specifics, so if perhaps you need additional assistance I suggest doing so (no my friends, I'm not being condescending). I have this sad sinking feeling that even after patch, there will still be a lot of unhappy Champions. My best suggestion is to find out if your problem is a known problem addressed by Bioware first, if not then look into your PC and settings, and all else fails: ask someone for help (with details!). Infinitely better than jumping on the bandwagon and shelving the game out of frustration. If anyone wants to add or correct anything here, feel free to do so! It's just my own personal experiance that I hope sheds a little hope for those that may go "oh, me too!"
Best Regards
