I feel compelled to point out that this game is seriously lacking a lot of the humor that helped lighten the dark world of the previous Dragon Age games. Darkspawn marching north, and hearing about Oghren bested by a roast nug still put a smile to my face.

There really aren't any characters that do that in DA2.

Don't get me wrong though, I appreciate the new depth and complexity of the DA2 characters over the old ones. Certainly each of them have their own histories and moral dilemmas that help color them in a lot more than the old companions, but while everything in Dragon Age got a facelift it seems like the companions only got more serious.

Even worse is that the restrictions on companions means that on Nightmare difficulty you're practically forced to take along characters that are pretty depressing, such as Anders or Aveline, who carry their burdens with them wherever they go.

Why can't there be just one character who lightens the mood of the game? Isabela wanted me to save her relic instead of the city and left me before act III, and her humor was confined to sex jokes.

Whatever happened to Oghren having a rash in an unknown place? Anders' attempts to charm Mhairi in the midst of a slaughter? Alistair's lamppost in winter?

Those were characters that I knew if I took along in my quests were going to make me laugh, and when I look at the lineup in DA2 it's almost depressing.

Please BioWare take this as a request, or advice, or however you will it, and deliver us a character that can provide some reliable comic relief.

P.S.
Where did all the genlocks go?

I thought Isabela was a riot, but then again I love dirty humor... I think I laughed more in DA2 than DAO, honestly.

I bring Varric with me all the time. Some of his stuff is funny, most of it isn't really. And his arsenal of humorous dialogue is pretty limited. And quite frankly, every time you go to visit Varric he's all business. It's just not the same as if he was keeping an eye out for the schleets.

I think it's because the setting and plot are so dark, the funny is funnier by contrast.

And why was this post not accompanied by a picture of a confused dog?

Sarcastic Hawke is certainly funny. If not for the actual joke how stupid he looks saying it.

Most NPCs didn't even think Hawke was funny.

^This. Jibed perfectly with my personal brand of self depricating snarkiness.

Bring Varric, Isabela and Aveline with you. Or Varric, Isabela and anyone, really. And you didn't find Varric and Aveline's Act 2 quests amusing? I certainly did.

Anders used to be a humourous character back in Awakening, hearing him be amazed in childish wonderment over the fact that the darkspawn IS talking, fuss over Ser Pounce-a-lot and whine to Sigrun about Legion of the Dead joinings being too boring was funny and cute for me.

...Then he went all Edward Cullen on us.

^--- This. I freakin' love Sarcastic Hawke, even if the joke isn't funny. There's something so pleasurable watching Hawke go 'Whoever's hiding, come out now! ... Unless you're a dragon, then feel free to keep hiding. Posted Image'

I want a companion though that shares this love of sarcasm.

Varric... Isabela... Merrill... all rather humorous in their own ways. And, when coupled with others, they bring out the funny in them too.

Varric + Fenris is pretty good banter. Isabela + just about anyone is good too, esp good with Aveline though, hehe.

Anders isn't funny at all which was a shame considering Awakenings, he mainly just insults everyone. Fool doesn't even get along with the fellow party mage Merril. Only person that likes him in your whole party is Varric and Varric is just that chill of a dude that he likes everyone, lol.

This. Fenris has some great dry humor as well.

You don't need DLC, OP. You need to stop taking the depressing characters along together.

To be honest most of the party banter wasn't funny to me, and seemed pretty poor compared to the banter of the previous games. Varric telling Merril to bring her ball of yarn? Not funny. Varric talking about Fenris' constant brooding? Not funny. Varric contriving ways to kill bartrand with Anders? Not funny.

There were really only two times the entire game that I laughed: One was when Merrill told the story of the dread wolf to Dog, and then at the end said "Well I'm glad you liked it, most animals aren't interested in Elvhen history" as if she had tried before.

The other time was when talking with Alistair, and he says "swooping is bad."

That was it, those were the only two gems I found in a sea of forced humor. All the humor seems to be stemming from clashes of personality in this game, which isn't necessarily bad since it certainly adds more depth to the characters, but there isn't any character in the game that's inherently funny. There's no Oghren, is what it really boils down to.

Oghren was a great character, it seemed like no matter what he did or spoke about it was wildly inappropriate for any social situation. There is no character like that in DA2, just a couple characters with a couple jokes, no character that you would bring to a party and say "this guy is HILLARIOUS."
