I really liked the way DA O portrayed Flemeth as a more haggard and grim looking woman.  She looked quite realistic,  a real witch of the wilds, and the overall feel of the game thus felt much more mature.  She was and (despite her new design) still is one of my favourite characters in the DA universe.

Posted Image Flemeth in DA O.

Now in DA 2 she looks way different, and I couldn't work out why I hated her design so much.  I kept thinking she looked like some sort of cartoon villain for children, and then I finally worked out why.

Flemeth in DA 2

Flemeth is just a digital version of Rita Repulsa from the original Power Rangers series.  I mean seriously, what is going on?

Edit: I don't want to go down the 'shapeshifter' argument.  If you bring this up you are obviously missing the point.

Um, just so you know, the Power Rangers is intended for a mature audience here in Asia. It is Disney's decision to re-package it for children. So yeah. And well I do like the new design. If nothing else, it shows that an older woman can still be visually appealing and badass, which is more than I can say for Wynn in DA:O.

No, you're wrong on this point.  Rita Repulsa was a creation of the American television series Mighty Morphin Power Rangers which was targeted at children, and therefore her character is entirely aimed at children.  They added footage of a Japanese show called Kyōryū Sentai Zyuranger into the original television series, and that series may (arguably) have been targeted at an older audience, but nevertheless for children.

I agree.. The old flemeth was "just" an old woman.. But you just knew that something was wrong... The whole screaming "LOOK AT ME I'M A EEEEEVIL WITCH OF THE WILDS!!!" thing in DA2 just doesnt do it for me..

Err, and you see this old, frail women turning in the dragon and making amazing entrance... just how?
Remember that she is a hag. Powerful hag. And she's also a women, who likes to look sexy, nothing new here.

She shouldn't look all gradma-innocent after her darkspawn meal in front of everybody - thought that would be nice WTF moment for those who didn't met her before

The lipservice paid towards a more grounded or "low fantasy" setting is long gone by this point.

For example, in the latest Laidlaw interview, he mentions that they could have either brought mages "down" towards the more grounded fighting style of warriors and rogues, but chose instead to make them OTT to match the wizards...

well in he first one you really didn't know her.... but now in the second one you know her as the old powerful dragon morphing daughter body stealing witch that she is so i think the shift of appearance is supposed to resemble her true nature

You do realize she's 'Flemeth the Shapeshifter' yes? She can look however she wants to look.

She looked like an old unassuming woman in a hut when she was trying to keep a low profile. But obviously, based on the clothes she made for Morrigan, she knows a thing or two about looking great when the mood strikes her.

It wasn't a retcon at all, but rather a building off what we already knew: She's awesome.

She is shapeshifter after all. She can probably look pretty much anything she wants.

I thought DA2 Flemeth was looking pretty bad ass... now all I'm ever going to hear is "Go go Power Rangers!" when I see her. I might have to hurt you. Haha!

Yes, she 'can' look however she wants, but anyone who claims that this new look wasn't result of the PR hype machine that gave us horned qunari and back-flip-smoke-teleportation-backstabs is just being willfully obtuse.

This was a design decision intended to target a different demographic than DA:O, make no mistake about it.

Delete - I don't want to argue the 'shapeshifter' argument, it misses the point on so many levels.

While I hate how a good low fantasy setting has been turned into a generic high fantasy setting with DA2, I actually prefer Flemeth's new look. She looks somehow more like the evil witch from fairy tales and folklore.

Several points:

1. Varric is telling the story. Varric is a compulsive liar. Theoretically, all the "extreme changes" (big blood splatters with the chunks/Flemeth/certain events) could be a form of embellishment.

2. "We stand on the precipice of change.... do not hesitate... to leap." Ever thought about that quote? It's in the destiny trailer as well as in game. Methinks Flemeth is gearing up for war.

3. She's also the Witch of the Wilds. How the hell do you think she seduces men, by acting like an old lady?

Agreed.  She doesn't want the Warden to thiunk of her as anyone in particular, but she has just impressed Hawke and co. with the dragon trick so she needs to  look powerful in human form too.  And again she needs to keep up that image when released from the amulet, plus the elves clearly have a lot of respect for her so I'd say she wants to live up to that image, whereas when she and Morrigan are living in the wilds she's safer if she looks like a harmless old woman

The shapeshifter argument doesn't hold ground. One of your first conversations with Morrigan established that shapeshifting is for taking on animal appearances, not those of other humans.

Furthermore, we are not debating her physiology here, but that ridiculous horn and feather get up.

1. Varric isn't a compulsive liar. He kept up his end of the deal after the deep roads, looks out for the other companions and buys you drinks. He is a storyteller and likes to exaggerate, but he will tell the complete truth when you ask him seriously about it.

2. I think Flemeth is indeed gearing up for war. Her quote was deliberately cryptic though. Anyhow I fail to see why she would need any sort of fancy armor when she can change into a dragon anytime she wants.

3. Flemeth doesn't need to seduce men since she kidnaps small girls for daughters, for which she eventually take over their bodies as vessels to continue her life. She also keeps her distance from civilizations and humans in general as per her teachings to Morrigan.

Did she get Mike Laidlaw's special button too?
