Thank you in advance.
I play on hard and I have not a dedicate healer. My Hawke is a mage and I've not any healing spells since imho healing in this game is not effective and it's better to make damage, mitigate it or controll the enemy in some way. So, it's more than possible but simply put you have to build the party in the correct way using CCC and threat management skills.
The problem is that bosses are immune to anything so if you build a party that is effective for 90% of the game you will face some trouble during those fights wich is one of the thing I do not like about DA2 boss design. Not that healing will solve anything. I think that the only ability tree that is really helpfull against bosses is the entropy one and maybe the stone spells.
The battle with the Rock Wraith is hard but it's doable without a helaer. You have to:
- Understand the enemy pattern/attacks and move your party accordingly. Using the pilons for your defense is really the point of the whole battle.
- Use a lot of health potion. I mean, A LOT. I used something like 20 potions against that sucker.
- Dispatch of the electirc guys asap when the Wraith goes to sleep and then concentrate against him since in that moment it's helpless.
- Tank and spank. The optimal party is 3 ranged + one tank. Personally, I made it with 2 melee and 2 ranged but honestly Isabella during that fight was doing nothing if not attacking the electric guys and making some stagger combo. Mind, having 2 melee is worst for most boss fights but works very well for the rest of the game.
- Use Dog if you can. It was very important for me when I had low health on Aveline but I could not use a potion because of the long cooldown.

I did my 2nd run on hard with Mage-Hawke and I only invested a single point in heal. It wasn't all that difficult in 99% of the fights.
Just to be sure, when he does his pink beam attack, are you hiding behind one of the pillars? His damage is dodgeable.

Re: Ancient Rock Wraith. You cannot ever melee him until he opens up and spawns 8x profane adds. If you melee it at any other time it will hurt your dudes so badly. I did it by setting party to hold position and dodging between pillars until he does the lightning attack or the ball attack. After that, he opens up and spawns profanes. I had my ranged attackers pummelling the Ancient Rock Wraith and my melee dudes killing the profane adds.
I do cheese the AI something fierce though so as soon as a wave spawns I run at least one full radar's distance away and then engage. You only have to deal with 1x wave. The next wave will spawn outside your aggro radius, so you can save, auto regen health/stamina/mana, summon dog and then pull the next wave.
There are many fights on Nightmare which I just find impossible unless I do this (the Nexus Golem room is a case in point).

If you disagree with the demon, I found it's best to fallback to the hallway you came in through. All Rock Wraiths are weak to cold dmg and spirit.
So if you got Cone of Cold, blast that group that spawns behind you and run out of there. Also if you can, try to immbolize or stun the main demon. He's really weak but you wanna get out of the center before the shades spawn. Once you get into the hallway you should be ok. Drop some aoe at the doorway and maybe a paralysis glyph to block it. I dropped back all the way to the turn and held there. It was still a tough fight.
If you have anders ability to revive it will help. Don't even heal if you have that. Just wait till your entire party dies and revive them all at once.
Falling back may seem cheesy to some, but you will just get swamped in the center. Don't stand in the enemy's killzone, create your own.

The only ones I'd consider buying is the crafted ones as assassins' and rage demons' can't steal them.

Things can steal the regular HP's? Never seen that.
On topic:
I'm about 5 quests from wrapping up my first play through on hard and I didnt find the rock golem to be too challenging. I did have a healer but I didnt have to use him too much. Never lost anyone.
I kited the "ball roll sonic the hedgehog" move he does to get him to hit a pillar then when he pops out you have a few seconds to get him, but other than that, my main (2h w 2h spec/reaver spec) and aveline (tank with many sustained defense abilities) just stayed in his face whaling on him. Pots for aveline as needed (with some heal support) and the reaver devour for PC kept them going nely. I had varic and anders for the other two. My varic just did the typical kite and shoot tactics while anders shot some peas as him and kept the buffs coming with haste, heroic aura, ench. weapons, etc.. I'd think it'd be easy enough without a healer but I can't say i tried it on this play through. I may have to load that save and try after i beat the game. I'm ready to wrap this play up though so i can try a 2h rouge =-).
High dragon was fun lol, and i would recommend a healer there. I took the same crew as mentioned above.

I don't get how so many of you talk about potions costing too much money. They drop more frequently the fewer you have in your inventory. I probably have purchased about 3 total and I play a party of Aveline and 3 rogues that drink em like mad.
