Templars are the noble protectors of the majority religion of half of the continent. They are regarded by the general populace as upright defenders of the people, protecting the world from the threat of magedeath. In some regions (e.g. Kirkwall) they seem overbearing, which has built resistance to them, but it seems to be an exception, generally they don't involve themselves in political affairs.
Mages are a minority fighting for their freedom, and not for that of others. In addition, they are generally regarded as a danger to all. All of the Templars claims are, essentially, correct - mages have incredible power, and they can become possessed and go out of control. Also, they "started it" (very clever Anders). The idea of the general populace supporting them seems unlikely.
Would the city elves rise up in their favour? The mage injustices seem a drop in the ocean compared to the injustice of the alienages and the elves' situation (odd that this hasn't been addressed like the mage issue). Would they seek to ally with the mages, who include elves in the hope of a better future? And would that improve popular opinion towards the mages?
Would the Chantry necessarily support general circle annulment? Are there any dissenting voices other than mages in the Chantry, such as a reformation (either theological or national, Henry VIII style) who might take it up? Alistair seems mage friendly in my game at least. What will the Seekers do, they don't seem totally Templary given Cassandra's interest in the true story?
Would Tevinter intervene, and would the Qun even support the Templar crusade against mages?
Any ideas, suggestions?
