I know Anders, Merrill, Fenris and the 2 siblings can die and that Hawke and Varric stay alive no matter what. What about the other three?

I dont think you can kill Seb, just have him leave, Isabella can leave or I guess she dies if you hand her over to the Qunari, and I dont think you can kill Aveline or get rid of her.

Oh, knowing Bioware, if you just get rid of someone there's a 99% chance they'll stay alive.

So that's Varric, Isabella, Aveline and Sebastian. Honesly I only see the first 2 coming back.

Sebastian simply leaves if you don't kill Anders. Fenris can be given to Danarius, but I don't think he can be killed in the story line. Aveline is with you no matter what I think.

Nope, Isabela escapes if handed over. She has character shields.

Aveline can leave if you side with mages, and she doesn't have full friendship/rivalry

He can be killed - if you side with the mages and he is not persuaded to join you, he will confront you later with some guards and attack you.

Aveline is with you no matter what I think.

Depending on her friendship status, she may oppose you in the end game.

Aveline has to be... well, at least 75% friendly. I've managed to keep her on my pro-mage side with less than 100% friendship. Same with Fenris, but they were both pretty high up there.

All of my companions were alive at the end of my playthrough :D. Only person not in my party was Carver cause I had to side with Magies to have Anders.
But all characters need to be at the max to go with any of your decisions.
Like if Fenris is at 100% Friendship I got NO rivalry points with him at all for siding with the mages.

I think the only one that stays by your side no matter what is Varric. Although Bethany and Carver will do it provided they don't die, either as a character (side with their faction or they are a Warden), or as an NPC during the final boss fight (if you oppose their faction, although if you side with the templars, you must intervene to save Bethany). The others can die or leave the party. Aveline and Fenris will side against you if you're a mage, Anders and Merrill if you side with the templars. Sebastian leaves if you spare Anders. Isabela, if you have her when Act III starts, she should be fine.

Apparently (according to someone on another thread) you can kill Isabela in Act 3 in the Blooming Rose? *shrugs* So her plot armour doesn't work lol.....

They don't need to be Friendly, just far enough in either direction you've gained their respect.  My gut tells me that if you've got either alignment bonus in their specialization tree, you're set, but I can't say for sure.  I know Fenris helped me fight for the mages on my first playthrough, despite being at 100% Rivalry.

The Friendship/Rivalry system really is a huge improvement over linear approval.

So Carver doesn't join you if you're pro mage? :(

I guess it depends on your response to him, perhaps if you scold him when he asks if you really wish to fight him he might stick with the templars, but when I chose to leave it up to him he stod by me with Cullen.

Someone stated that you can...... hang on a minute let me go find what someone wrote and quote it.....

''You can kill Merrill in battle if you side with the templars. I don't know if she ever threatens to leave, I have never refused to do her missions.''

I can get you the link to the thread if you like? :)

Thanks :)
I guess you have to be on rivalry with her because she didn't turn on me on siding with the Templars.

All of the companions will fight for whatever side you choose if your rivalry OR friendship is high enough. Aveline, Fenris and Merrill have never turned on me.

Anders will always die if you side with the Templars. If you do, you cannot convince him to stay, and if you tell him to go away he'll still confront you once you're in the Gallows. I tried all three options I got when he confronted me, and all of them ended the same way: Anders dies. I think he actually wins the 'Least likely to survive' prize (except Bethany/Carver depending on your class).

I haven't found a way to kill Isabela. Hand her over to the Qunari, and she escaped with the book three days later by jumping overboard, I believe.

That makes the only guaranteed survivals Varric, Isabela and Sebastian, I think? That's more than in Origins, where the only ones who were completely immune because of their plot armor were Morrigan and Dog (if you were a Human Noble).

How do you kill Alistair in Origins?

Anora opts to execute him and you do not object.  I think, anyway.

He can also die killing the Archdemon, obviously.

No, he does. If he's a Gray Warden, he joins you regardless. If he's a templar, then he only joins you for the final battle against Meredith. He'll be an NPC like Cullen.

I was trying to see how many companions you can lose/kill in a playthrough awhile ago. Merrill and aveline can't die and won't turn on you regardless of rep/who you side with/personal quests. I tried it with them at like 25% rivalry and no quests done. They have like one extra line of disapproval but still side with you. I think people were getting false info from the guidebook, which is terribly inaccurate, or maybe I did something wrong. Varric is a given though obviously. That leaves 3 party members at the end, merrill, aveline, and varric.
